Our Garden Can Now Water Itself! - How to Harness Gravity?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Today we plant our garden! Try out Huel here!: my.huel.com/Jerry and thanks to Huel for sponsoring this video! Cambry and I built our large raised accessible garden last year. And so far, everything is still in one piece! This year we are upgrading the garden with a self watering drip irrigation system using water collected from the rain! Free water is the best water. Hopefully we get some rain this year!

This is a pretty damn sweet and elegant solution to building pressure! Our rainwater tank is ground level so only trickles even when full, so our solution was a 12v pump hooked up to the solar.

@@jah-jah87 sure, i just used a float valve in a pvc pipe. When the water in the pvc tank evaporated past a certain level, the valve would open and allow water to flow. A little Water would feed back into the float tank and turn off when full again. The hardest part is fine tuning it to deliver the right amount of water before turning off. Set it and forget it. The nice part is since the pvc tank is open to air, it also stays off when it rains

@johnny penny I don't think so. A pump, battery and cells will have to be replaced sooner or later, that is not sustainable. Pretty sure all those things together leave a bigger footprint than you might expect considering the extraction of rare metals and other components needed. And since they will have to be replaced, the lifetime footprint might double or even triple. Whereas the metal beams could easily be used for hundreds of years if treated correctly, just like a wood construction.

  • @98Zai

@johnny penny I suppose so, I just can't see how a raised container could possibly be beaten by advanced machinery in this respect. Also for a _fun_ reality check, look up the situation of rare metal and mineral mining in Africa. Deforestation, corruption and general exploitation.

I have something alike for my greenhouse. It’s off-grid water wise, but instead of using gravity, I have a pump sitting inside of the water tank, which is powered by a absolutely tiny solar panel. There’s no maintenance whatsoever and goes perfectly along with a few automatic window openers for the four windows on the roof (powered by expanding gasses), which help to keep the temperatures not too high inside. Cool project!

Awesome system! In 2016 Colorado legislature finally allowed residents to capture rainwater, but only hold 110 gallons max. So I'm running two elevated 55 gal barrels in a similar, but scaled down setup. I'm a fan of soaker hoses over drip irrigation in raised beds/flat gardens; less loss to wind/evap, less maintenance, easier to configure year after year, and lower cost. Happy gardening!

Yes sir, absolutely right. I've tinkered with hydroponics and rain collection systems and the fact that the tank is not in direct sunlight helps...it's just not enough. Stagnant water with air exposure and indirect sunlight WILL CREATE ALGAE. Also a weird smell, an air stone from aquarium or fishtank is a cheap but elegant solution to an otherwise nasty problem.

This is great! Excellent work! With the infrastructure in place, now you can key in on some efficiency improvements. I would consider zoning the drip runs with the zones of your garden. This way you don't risk over/under watering certain plants. This really makes me want to rig up a water collection system.

Love how functional and clean the design looks! My only complaint is you didn’t raise the tank shelf up a few notches so the added lateral supports are at the same elevation as the top of your door. It’s probably just my tendency of hitting my head on things that brings that up. 😂
