gotta remeber the cinematic rule: if you don’t see the body they’re not dead the ships had secret passages and since lucious was stedes right-hand-man in a sense, he would know where those were he’s hiding rn

jim was being secretive because they were in the run at that point. the fact they were in disguise was also a play and lucius accidentally stumbled into their secret. their treatment felt like a life or death situation so of course they’d react that way. also, please be mindful that jim is neither male nor female and uses they/them pronouns :)
