Izzy wasn't just the Revenge's unicorn. He was our unicorn too. It sounds trite and cliched, but this character really did change my life. He made me brave enough to reach out to the people who love me, to accept their love instead of repeatedly shoving them away because I didn't feel like I deserved it. He showed me that real strength didn't come from being rigid, but from the courage to allow oneself to be soft. I know it's just a TV show. Logically I know that: I'm not stupid. But I feel like I've lost a friend.

I have been fascinated by Izzy since season 1. It was always clear that he had so much more beneath the surface and I think the writers did a great job in developing him this season. I also understand the death, even though I hate how much it hurts and I'm bawling from just writing this. Con O'Neill breathed so much life into what could have EASILY been a lazy "sidekick/right-hand man" stereotype. This scene is so f'ing well acted; it is literally perfect. Also, this isn't a "bury your gays" trope just because we didn't want him to die...

@@awesome13awfulnessi think it feels rushed because the writers just didn’t have enough time. This season should have been 10 episodes, but max only gave them 8, and they did the best they could with what they had

@@tucoravid3510 okay that might be true but they also cut have left some stuff completely for a possible 3rd season instead of rushing season 2. So many characters (and there development) just feels like background noise to a Stede x Ed plot. And even that feels rushed. Ed's redemption? Did it happen off screen? From 1 episode to another everyone's trusting each other again. Ed's """apology""" to Izzy for the leg. It would have been more appropriate or devastating if Ed only (and then truly) apologized when Izzy is dying. The whole thing with Olu, Jim, Archie, and Zheng - that could have been something, but it wasn't. If you write 10 episodes and then ex idk 30% of content (character development, plot, story) and put it into 8, you won't have a good result. Better 8 good episodes and maybe the possibility of a 3rd season, then 8 episodes with still only the possibility of a 3rd season but that makes fans wondering whether it's even going to be any good.

agree 1000%!! but wait.. are people calling this a "bury your gays" thing? because of all the characters, Izzy was perhaps the LEAST gay lol (speaking of openly gay, that is, and compared to the rest of the main cast. not speculating his sexuality here) i mean, everyone in OFMD is queer in some way... Edit: yup. found it. people DO indeed call this the "bury your gays" trope. its fine to dislike this choice. its fine to dislike this season even, or even the whole show because if Izzy's death. but for the love of god people... dont tell lies about it just because youre upset. your upset is VALID as it is, you dont have to lie about it. be mature...

@@DragonbornCanid I personally have the theory that it feels for some people like bury your gays because a similar trope fits in my opinion even more. Izzy's arc feels a lot like a coming out story. I mean, you said it yourself, he was "the least gay" and he started to open up and show a bit more of himself and his queer side (singing in drag make up for example) so it's actually more an "out of the closet, into the fire" situation. and honestly? that also sucks. I am not saying that it was intentional. of course it wasn't. but it also wasn't handled with the most elegance. just like almost everything about Izzy's death. (a lot of people are more mad about how he died than that he died) and even though it's a show full of queer people, Izzy's arc still followed the classical beats of bury your gays. I think that's another reason why it feels like that to a lot of people even if it isn't actually byg.

Ok I have some opinions. I was an Izzy-hater in season 1, and I got super confused by how I started liking him this season. Amazing script plus amazing acting, I suppose. Just before this scene happened, I was thinking “they wouldn’t do it, the fandom would go after their throats if they do it” (and they did it), BUT, even if it is bittersweet having the trope of “redemption arc for eventually killing the character”, a part of me is glad that the writers committed to the story, and the building of the characters and their journeys, even if it’s painful or upsetting, because they know that’s how life is, and if this silly show has something, is its authentic portrayal of the human experience. I’m sad but I’m not mad, because I don’t feel sorry for Iz. “Being a pirate is killing for your found family even if you’re already dead”. He knew, and he went down like the great ones. He became a seagull too, he became a legend.

If they'd killed Izzy in Season 3 or so but yeah. Guess if theyre not sure that there'll be a S3, they might as well introduce more new characters in S2 and ex others as well. That's what happens when studios get greedy, cut the budget and only give 8 episodes to one of the best shows. Honestly even with the limited time they had to tell the story, this was one of the best writing I've ever seen. I keep seeing people saying that a lot of things didn't make sense this season and I just don't see it, it's probably the downside of reading fanfiction of something that's yet to come out, people get really strong about how something should play out. And as much as it hurts to see Izzy die, his death was almost symbolic of Ed finally being truly free to be himself and Izzy knew it. I think that was pretty obvious from what he said before he died. It's not easy to follow up a show like this with an incredible season 2, but these guys did it.

Ed was never a great guy to start with either, then turned into a fucking monstrous abuser to everyone, BUT he gets to do a pittance apology and live on with the crew (how dare they say family) that he abused. So the one in the romantic relationship lives while the one nobody loves is expendable.... as per fucking usual.

Yeah, thank you for vocalizing what I hated most about this show during season 2. I love this show, but the fact that everyone just brushed off being physically and emotionally abused by Blackbeard and the audience was supposed to forgive him because of his cute little relationship with Stede bothered me. To an almost triggering degree because I've been in an abusive relationship before. Izzy brushing it off is in character for him, because he's emotionally constipated at best. But instead of the writers diving into him working through his trauma in that regard, they decided to paint him as the problem all along and kill him off. I know he was the one that originally egged on Blackbeard, but that was a completely different character than we started to see in season 2. Izzy was the victim at that point, and then he just... died. Sorry for the tangent, but I also frustrated and you were the first comment I saw that called this out.

@@melodyknievel515 Sorry for My rant: I was raised by an abusive parent who had wildly erratic mood swings, so I'm particularly familiar with having to walk on eggshells around the person who controls you. And I'm pissed off that the writers seem to think Ed did enough to be forgiven. I'm sorry, when? The part where he delivered the non apology to the crew? When he fixed a door? The part where he had Lucius hurt him back instead of, oh I don't know, making a real effort to change? The part where he paid for a party, throwing money at the problem? (and it's not like he acquired that loot on his own) Then Ed sleeps with Stede when his capacity to consent is questionable. Then he blames Stede for going too fast, as if Ed had no say in the matter. Did I miss the part where Ed tries to stop him? He knew how traumatized Stede was. And in the end they have Izzy take the blame for Ed's horrific behavior, like Ed's not an adult responsible for his own actions. I can't believe that Izzy says the crew love Ed. Was it the blood loss? Are Stede and Fang the whole crew? Why would the rest love him? Nothing I saw showed that Ed even thinks about the crew other than how they affect his self esteem. It's like the writers tried to give both Ed and Izzy redemption arcs, but they made their them and their relationship too dark and complicated to fix in less than a season. So they got only part of the way before they they had to rush a dramatic wrap up in the last episode - for fear of no renewal. What a waste of the great acting.

I was never a fan of Stede and Ed, the only reason I loved season 1 so much was due to the crew, they were the stars of the show for me. Just like how in season 2, Izzy was the one shinning until this pitiful and meaningless death. Others pointed it out but why does Izzy has to apologize to Ed? Sure he was not innocent himself but compared to Ed's "apology", this felt pointless. As if killing Izzy erased all Ed's own crimes and everything was forgotten. The pacing oh fuck the pacing was awful, barely anyone cried at his funeral and then wedding as if they didn't care at all about him at all. You can blame Max for this but THEY knew they had 8 episodes, it was their jobs to write a story that wouldn't feel rushed. But more than this: I also absolutely HATE that the one character that has to die is the disabled/suicidal one. Do you realize how triggering that is?! Especially in a show that was supposed to be found families/opening to LGBTQ+ people? Being disabled and having those suicidal ideas, it was absolutely awful. This season ends on episode 6 for me and a new season? Not going to watch, never. Good for you if you loved it but understand that not everyone is going to have a similar opinion based on their personal experience and should not be silenced nor criticized for having a different one. Oh also: ripping Izzy's leg to use it for the cross was fucking disrespectful but not like anyone seems to realize this.

I'm a survivor of a really abusive relationship, and I saw a lot of myself in Izzy this season--just brushing it off, making apologies and excuses. I used to do all of that, and I was hoping they would acknowledge just how much Izzy sacrificed himself for the sake of the crew, and they didn't. They killed him off instead. Izzy didn't deserve this. After finally growing and becoming part of a community, after creating connections and protecting the crew from Ed, only he has to apologise as he dies? Only he gets no happy ending? Ed gave the shittiest apology for his abuse of Izzy, and yes it is abuse when you cut someone's toes off and then make him lose his leg, and he just gets off scot-free? The crew he's bonded with don't even get a final farewell with him. I love Con's acting for the scene but I feel so cheated. There was no meaning to his death. It wasn't necessary. He deserved better than this.

i hate this ending. it makes no sense narratively. there was an entire season spent of izzy being described as indestructible, surviving so many deadly wounds, only to go down in a way previously established on the show is very improbable (he got shot on the left side - ed himself said the left side doesn’t have any major organs). not to mention he underwent an incredible character redemption arc, became the best captain and friend for those around him, only to be killed like that? the ending wouldn’t have been different at *all* if he would have lived. ed and stede could still have had their happy gay ending without izzy’s brutal murder - and the wedding would have been happier! his last words didn’t even mean anything. he tells ed he is surrounded by loving family when it was never officially established they forgave him and love him; not only that, but then ed immediately leaves said loving family for some whim-prone dream with his sweetheart. stede showed no remorse during the funeral, and why did nobody come up to izzy and tell him how loved he was? why did nobody step up and tell him they are grateful he saved them? why did izzy’s last words have to be wasted on the man who tortured and abused him for so long, *apologizing* to him instead of it being the other way around? why didn’t we get just a minute more - a minute of them crying, grieving, mourning, instead of just throwing the wedding and inn at us? tl;dr i am incredibly disatisfied with this ending because it only served for shock value and added nothing to the story.

Ah, Izzy literally admitted to forcing Ed to be something he didn't want to be for years (out of a selfish desire). Ed was bored, sûicidal and Izzy knew it and still kept pushing him to be Blackbeard. What happened between them was mutual abuse. Baby girl Izzy did abuse Ed for years, then belittled him and threatened him until the reactive abuse began and he suddenly began to realize he had started something he couldn't control. Yes, Ed didn't apologize, but there's nothing wrong with Izzy doing it, especially after what he did to Ed.

The acting is great but I have issues with the writing. I don't mind killing the character, the problem is, his death was meaningless. He deserved a far more heroic ending, some sort of noble self-sacrifice to save the others... maybe to save Stede or Ed. And not just randomly shot during the escape! This season started very well, but got messy towards the end.

I think it was ok. LET ME EXPLAIN; Making him have a glorious/heroic death would be for HIM, but I think the death they decided on was for US. For our psychology, for our emotions. If they gave him a glorious death they would care more about Izzy's character than how to play with our emotions, plus if we saw him battling and losing his fight we would already suspect/be sure he was gonna die, I mean we would be seeing it, kind of being prepared and understand where this was going. But having him die so randomly, while we see all of them getting freed and cheering and being all happy and victorious, thinking everything was going to be ok and then THIS happens.... I think it was well orchestrated. Fucked us really well and raw. Plus, it makes it more realistic. In real life you can't predict/plan your way of dying, it could be at any moment in the most meaningless or stupid way. We don't live in a movie that makes every little bit have a great meaning or symbolism. And this series is all about real life situations and feelings, even if they present it comedy/fairytale - like. Raw, unpredictable, heart wrecking. And a glorious death does not make you a glorious person if you weren't one, neither does a meaningless/uninteresting death make you meaningless if you have been a legend in your life. Death does not define you, doesn't change what you were. At least that's my opinion! I think it was nice. Oh, and also making him die so randomly and so soon after he started being warm in his heart and being cared for by the crew and not living on to enjoy this new life increases the pain, so yeah, I stand by what I said XD

I know many folks will disagree with me on this one, but I can't stop thinking how unfair it is for Izzy to be with Ed of all people in his last moments. I find it baffling that he was written to apologize to a person who was more than cruel to him and the entire crew, someone who isn't going to have to deal with the fact that he tortured and abused the man that cared about him for years (not saying he is an angel of course) on his deathbed. Of all times. While he himself was out there being the most well developed character this season. He changed and became better. And by the end of the season, just before he gets to reap the fruit of his labor, just before he gets to enjoy being open and being loved, he dies and the last thing he says has to be dedicated to Ed of all people. I find that a bad choice on the writers' part.

I dont think it was bad writing, I think it was written that way to make it have a bigger impact. Him almost being to the point of finding hapiness only to be killed and then realizing his mistakes to someone he cared about who may have not cared about him just adds to the tragedy of his death. Its supposed to be upsetting because they were working on making the character progress to resolve it in tragedy. Not bad writing (imo) just extremely tragic

This scene is very sad but what bugs me more are the continuity errors! Fang moves spots drastically from the shots of Ed and Izzy(he’s sitting on the left) to the shots of just the rest of the crew (he’s standing in the back). Seems like Stede and Roach might too (though you could argue they’re just obscured by Ed but meh I don’t buy it lol). I wish they paid more attention to this when editing, it takes my attention away from the important bits!

Ill probably be called a delusional izzy fan for this but I genuinely think his death, as well as the finale, was badly written. He didnt have to die. He couldve been the revenge's new captain, as he was their 'new unicorn'. He grew so much over the season to just...die? And be buried on land, when his heart was for the sea? Also, his whole life he has been devoted to Ed, been by Ed's side, stayed with Ed, loved Ed, suffered with and because of Ed, and now, died in Ed's arms. He never got a life outside of Ed. We got a glimpse of it when the crew made him a leg, but in the end he will always be under Ed's feet, now literally as he is buried right in the ground next to the inn he inhabits. 'At least he died happy' dying happy for someone is not the same as dying happy because you are satisfied of your life and at peace. Dont even get me started on stede and ed's relationship...

I know im not the only one. I didn’t hate how they killed off Izzy. But I can see how it rubbed some people off the wrong way. And even I have to admit, I knew someone was gonna die, and I figured it would be Izzy, but the way it was executed just seemed. Eh??? Like did he really need to die?? After all the progress and development his character was getting in season 2??? Me n my partner were starting to love Izzy! It sucks how this show got cancelled abruptly.
