    As an Alaskan, you are ABSOLUTELY saying Denali correctly. Us locals cringe when we hear people pronounce it “Den-awly”! 😂😂 I was actually relieved to hear an outsider pronounce it correctly like you guys did. Catching glimpses of this mountain even from Anchorage is an awesome sight to see! My sons middle name is McKinley, named after this mountain. I’m a new subscriber and your videos are so well done and represent the state I love so much in such a beautiful and adventurous way! Happy trails!

    Thank you, we are glad to get a local's stamp of approval on the pronunciation. We try very, very hard to say things correctly and quite a few people (who we gather aren't even from Alaska) have tried to rip us for our pronunciation. Thank you for the kind words about the videos, we appreciate you watching! We LOVE your state, it is insanely gorgeous!

    Also in the 30% club! It seems like the morning is the right time; we had a clear view from the bus tour on July 8. I did go up to the top of Mount Healy, but couldn't see Denali from there. Instead I saw a rainstorm in the area as the mountains generate their own storm system! (I had a similar thing happen on Flattop Mountain.) But instead of getting rained on, there was a rainbow on the descent, which was awesome. By July 8, the bridge over the Savage River was fully assembled, and I was able to hike on the other side of the river. Otherwise I did the same thing you did: I combined Savage Alpine with Savage River and took the bus back. Thank you for helping me relive all of this! I even went to that Subway. :)

    Ya we felt so lucky to see it on our first day in the park! We noticed when we did the Mount Healy Overlook that those mountains in the distance always had rain clouds over them. There was a stretch of that road that runs next to the park that was under construction and that stretch was always under a rain cloud the several times we drove it! Wow they got that bridge done fast!

    That was fortunate! I felt freed up after I saw Denali my first morning during the bus tour. There were some clouds around it in the afternoon when I did Savage Alpine/River, but I still managed one decent photo. The bus driver had predicted the clouds. If you get a good bus driver at Denali, they can usually give you some good tips on seeing Denali for that day's weather. They weren't messing around with the bridge! I just looked at two photos I have of it, and it certainly looks like fresh construction. :)

    I have quite seriously looked into a trip to Alaska and realised early on how inaccessible many of the parks are unless you can afford the flights. When combining it with the need to rent a car and pay for accommodation, and the transatlantic flight, it's been put on our 'future trip' list up there with the likes of Japan, Namibia and Norway! I'd never heard of the 30% club in the opening sneak peek, I assumed it was something like only 30% of American's make it to Denali?! I was very wrong! 🤣 I love that the park has the free shuttle. The amount of times we've been to US NP's and at the visitor centre they've said if we're with someone else with a car... and with the exception of 1 sole day in Yellowstone when hiking wasn't on the cards, we never are! I loooooved the dog sled demo and how informative it was. Depending on how many people there were behind you though, I feel like the mic maybe wasn't needed! 🎤

  • @AdventuresofAplusK

    @AdventuresofAplusK

    2 жыл бұрын

    Ya I can imagine that would be a pricey trip coming from over there! I guess that's why a lot of people take the ferry up and get bussed around to all the places they want to see. That would make it more affordable than having your own car, but it is almost always more worth it to have your own vehicle! We love it when parks have shuttles! The dog sled demo was really informative and a ton of fun! The crowd was about 3 rows deep. They speaker probably could've gotten away without using the mic. It kept going in and out and we didn't have any trouble hearing her

    @@AdventuresofAplusK I think trying to get Andy to agree to a cruise and then a tour on a big bus at the other end would be a non-starter, though to be honest, the idea doesn't fill me with joy either! I'm happy to wait until we can afford to do it how we want to do it.

    @@joeyindahl2593 I listened to a podcast Adam and Kathryn did ages ago where the host talked about how expensive car rental was in Alaska after COVID - was it always this high or is this still the 'after COVID' price? We've been stung this summer in Europe, after buying flights we were shocked to learn how much car rental is so are having to suck it up - but thankfully it's not Alaska prices!

    This brings back memories of my six week adventure in Alaska back in 2016. The itarod dog adventure was also a highlight. I talked to a few guys who ran that race before. Another highlight I had in Denali was spending a weekend all the way up in Katishna. There was a bus that took you there and spotting for amazing sites and wildlife on the way was breathtaking. Love your videos. Hoping to get back to Alaska next summer.

    First comment, 5 minutes after video post. Mt Mckinley is unique in many ways, the land around it is so low, close to sea level, that it has a gigantic vertical from base to summit, one of the biggest in the world, matching some of the highest peaks in the Himalaya. There are many other mountains in Alaska, and the Kluane Park region of the Yukon, that are like this too, they are just not well known. Some of them are Mounts Logan, St Elias, Lucania, Bona, King, Foraker, Sanford, Blackburn, Steele, and Fairweather, all above 15,000 feet above sea level, and nearly as high above their bases. That is why these mountains are so huge. I think it would be good if more of these mountains were officially given their original Native People's names as Denali recently was done.

  • @AdventuresofAplusK

    Ya that's pretty wild about the base to summit height! I think they should rename them to the First Nation and indigenous names as well!

    Awesome! I was up there in the 90’s on a clear day one can literally see that mountain 200 miles away. When I was up there before I also found a trail closed due to bear activity but here’s the thing when I got there I decided to go the other way than what was common only to find a sign saying the trail was closed upon my return complete with fresh bear claw marks on a nearby tree. Luckily the car was not far away and I had the bear spray out just in case until I got to the car.

Also, last Sept I took one of my twins and his wife on an Alaskan cruise and we loved seeing Juneau, Skagway and Sitka. Can't wait to go back.
