Our first time in Australia: A dream come true ❤️🇦🇺

Ever since I was 10, I wanted to visit Australia. Even though this was our 49th country and we were completely jet lagged from our overnight flight from Bali, this was such a special moment.
Part 2: • ONE DAY IN MELBOURNE |...
Welcome to Melbourne, Australia // 1 YEAR World Trip // DAY 244// March 2, 2018 // Country #49
Why are our videos SO FAR behind real time?
Short answer: A hard drive crash lost 74 days and 13 countries! We retold these days using Peter’s pictures in our “Lost Episodes.” And NOW we are so excited to edit the remaining 5 months worth of footage :)

Yes, I agree with Robin, the best country in the world. And within, you're heading for Sydney, the most spectacular city in the world (not withstanding SF and Vancouver, zorry guys). But for a town a bit closer to nature, try Brisbane: When I was last there, in 2001, the streetcars were catamarans and some downtown streets ended in the bush. I was going to warn you about left-hand driving, but you've likely faced that already. Oh, I dunno how you managed it, but you've jumped the Covid-inspired State barriers. Good luck and have fun.

One grocer said "Oh, they're dear". I dunno if the situation is the same, but, in the long...long term, planting lime trees seems like a good bet. More recently, one of the US nite show hosts interviewed Jacinda, the PM of NZ, and they hit it off. She invited him and he went, and was met by J. in her Toyota, not by any entourage. That sez volumes. Happy hunting.

Even more: This is hard to believe, but I was standing in line at the local store checkout counter, in Sarasota, Florida, when I heard an OZ accent who was yakking about Brisbane. I whirled around, challanging him to knowledge about Aust. Zoo, and he did me one better by asking me about a pub 2 blocks South. I didn't know it, cuz I always approached from the North, from Noosa, where I lived. The Royal Australian Mint were the inventors of those ‘plastic’ polymer bank notes which has now been used by many countries. The size of the two dollar coin was determined after consideration of the needs of the visually impaired community, security considerations, a desire to avoid shaped coins, practical limitations to the diameter and thickness of coins, and to allow for future expansion of Australia's circulating coin array. If you notice all our coins are totally different sizes and thicknesses but our 50c is the biggest and is our oldest minted modern AUD coin (1966) after we converted from British style pounds and shillings. Our paper notes for the $1 and $2 were discontinued in the early 80’s and the notes came in the early 90’s. In the last 5 years our notes have had a massive redesign and upgraded security added. Random thing about the tall coffee cup spout, it’s so you don’t burn your lips! Which hotel did you guys check into? It looked pretty nice! I’m kinda new to Melbourne as I moved from Sydney a year ago a and always like looking for cheap hotels in the CBD as I live 2 hours away and must stay a night or two to complete my city shopping :)

Having lived in The USA & traveled there widely, with our American friends, we teased them continually about using the word "bathroom" when they actually meant "toilet/water closet/shit house etc." ps. Melbourne is The Australian Rules Capital (no, not Rugby, or Soccer or NRL) BUT our own Game "AFL" founded in Melb at the MCG in1852 before any other sport on earth was 'codiefied' {had the rules of play written/published}. The MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground -holds 100,000 fans called barrackers also here, & was designed as a Winter sport to keep Crickers fit in the off-season 'cos Cricket is the national summer Game. There are 18 AFL sides/team across Aussie, & Richmond (a Melb Inner-Suburb) Tigers are current Premiers (Champions) with a membership exceeding 100 thousand of paided-up fans. Google AFL for the rest. (pps. AFL= Australian Football League and is the best game in the World !!!!

Oh, I forgot to mention Australia Zoo, about 3-miles North of Brisbane. In the 80's, a guy named Steve Irwin established it and, via TV exposure in the US, enticed some of us to visit. It was/is a family affair, with Trudy (I forgot her name) from San Diego, the wife who kept the books, and Bindi, the first kid. Then Steve was killed by a poisonous skate and we all thought she'd pack it up and come back. But no, 20-years later, there she was, and Bindi flowered . Today, the zoo still runs, with the Irwin clan in charge.

It’s hard to compare those 2 places! The weather that day reminded me of a fall day in Colorado. Colorado Springs where we lived receives 300+ days of sunshine a year, so when it does snow, it melts the next day because the sun is so strong and you can have warm days in the middle of winter 😍 Also the mountains in Colorado are stunning! ⛰ We did love the public transportation and culture of Melbourne 😍 Both places are amazing for their own reasons 🤩

It costs more to produce than they are actually worth and our country loses money each year making Pennies🙈 I don’t agree with you though on the dollar bill 😂 it’s probably though just because that’s what I’m used to. I think $1 coins are weird. I like being able to have small bills - less weight and great when go to garage sales - people selling their unused stuff at their house. And kids get SO excited when they earn a $1 bill
