They do something similar to Flugtag in Japan called Bird Man Rally. The difference is that all the teams are actually serious. No silly parade floats falling off a cliff and silly dances. Also it's really impressive. They have both gliders and pedal-powered planes. The air time for the gliders is insane, like usually more than a minute.

OK YES!!! Please bring in more of that film. Having something like this in the flite test store would be amazing, providing that final step between foam board and Balsa construction. Learning to cover is a necessity for most balsa builds and being able to learn on something as forgiving and easily made as the flite test foam board sheets would be a God send.

Great video. In my mind, I've been comparing the Flugtag competition with Pinewood Derby. You can check out videos on optimizing pinewood derby cars, but you have a similar situation. When the plane leaves the dock, it has its potential energy and whatever kinetic energy you can muster into the takeoff. Therefore, you want to optimize everything you can. Keep the CG as high as you can to increase the P.E. Don't allow the wheels to have too much rotational inertia because that will take away from your overall K.E. Things like this could help you get a bit more flight time. Great luck at the competition.

You should add some vortex generators to the leading edge of the wings because they make a high speed vortex on the top of the wing which makes a low pressure zone on the top of the wing increasing lift at really low speeds. You could also add some wing fences to "focus" the the air flow over and under the wings and keep the air from moving outboard. Also some of the things ive said might not be true cuz i am only 12 and only know this information from google

Really interesting! I don't think that lever need be a problem. Weightshift aircraft - hang gliders, ultralight flexwings - are controlled by an A-frame which is not intuitive at the beginning, because the inputs are the opposite compared to conventional stick flying. High-time 'normal' pilots often have difficulty converting. To dive, you pull the bar towards you, climb means push bar out. Regards from London UK.

Oh no! Ditch the wheels and get it on a stand! This is the only way it will work!!! The stand, as it dumps off of the platform, acts like an upside-down high-star, flinging the plane off. That is how that B-25 did so well! It's an added fling at the end that propels the craft off and to flying speed. Pushing won't get it fast enough!

Agreed, in fact you could improve on the design of that B-25 launch dolly by making it become a trebuchet as it falls off the edge. The four guys pushing it need to be at the front, so when they fall off the edge, their combined weight hanging on to a sturdy handle or even connected harness contributes to the launch velocity. Get the 4 biggest heaviest guys you can!!

Well it was a good attempt guys, shame it seemed to be in a stalled condition the moment the plane left the platform. Others have used higher launch cradle devices with catapults, I suggest you use a similar concept next time. ...and take a stick with a ribbon with you to check the wind at launch, that extra 2 knots of wind gust the right way at the right time could change your distance from 2 feet to 200 feet. Eagerly awaiting your debrief of the flight.

Good suggestions (I don't remember the blimp build; gotta go back and find it). Likewise, I've been wanting the team to revisit their flying saucer project (mostly a "flop" but still a fun idea.) Version 2 - ditch the (heavy) internal frame in favor of a monocoque structure with internal formers/braces, use (the same) embedded thruster tubes, fill the rest of the interior with helium, eliminate the plastic umbrella canopy and use a thinner plastic (seal), etc. I think it would work!

I would have done a off white/tan color and done the same name as the Voisin Farman I as this is what the Glider looks like.

Just watched the Cincinnati attempt from a cell phone video. I think you forgot something: pilot weight and what it does to the wing loading. Pilot weight, to scale, should be added to model prototypes. My background is in model rocketry (Estes). I had to make the adjustments to get the machines the build the R&D concepts.

Make this design available or plans at least to make an RC version! Good luck on your endeavors nonetheless!

What I don't get is why a biplane? I have done a lot cheap foamie conversions, ft stuff and did a biplane and my research said they aren't efficient? Great project and love the channel.

Hey Josh I'm soo glad I could meet you at oshkosh 2023. Also great job making those wings and tail.

Hopefully the pilot will remember to release the over-the-shoulder control arm just before they hit the water to help prevent injury to the shoulder or arm on impact. Maybe you could think of a way to install something on the control arm that will help ensure that the arm moves up and away from the pilot when it hits the water rather than being pulled down toward the pilot.

You need to do a tow test to determine speed to fly, CG and trim.

Why the overarm control? Surely a light-weight pulley could have routed the control to the joystick or a lever in front of the pilot. It could also reverse the control, so a forward push sends the nose down and pulling back raises it.

Strong as B17?....mmm dont think so, but the silver covering looks awesome! Id like it if you carry in store. Too bad you couldnt test the flugtag glider w pseudo-catapult similar to wright bros.

I won’t be building craft as large as yours but I can see a definite use for the metallic like sheeting for my RC planes. If you can provide it at a cost lower than amazon then I would gladly purchase it from you instead.

Very large paper cup and a hang glider? The film would be a great product.

I Think a Flite test Fabric would be an idea. Perhaps a smaller width for RC and a wider Width for Ultralights
