OUR FAVORITE DARK FANTASY - Lore Intro to Abercrombie's First Law

Wizards and Warriors new animated fantasy documentary lore video will talk about the world of First Law created by the Joe Abercrombie, which we consider our favorite dark fantasy universe. In the first episode we give an introduction to this universe, detailing the earliest epoch of this world’s history, the era of the demon dominance and how Euz Devil-Blood fought them along his sons Juvens, Kanedias, Bedesh and Glustrod, about the rise of the old Empire at Aulcus, about the creation of the House of the Maker in Adua, about Glustrod's rebellion and more.

    I was a big fan of the First Law trilogy and the trilogy of independent books like Best served cold, the heroes and red country aswell as the anthology but the time/ technological jump between those and the newest trilogy was way too jarring for me, I couldnt get into them and now have not even thought about Joe Abercombie or his world. Real shame, I had the same problem with the expanse, there was nearly 15/20 years between the final books in terms of story. Shame, I really wanted to enjoy them!

    It’s basically like House of Cards combined with The Witcher & LOTR. Amazingly dark and gritty, but also so funny with the most amazing action (which normally I find boring reading about). It’s so good. Everyone loves Glokta, Cosca, Shivers, the clown Jezal, Bethod’s obnoxious sons, Black Dow and so on.

    Always felt like Abercrombies’ books were the most true to life. People love to call the first law dark fantasy, but it’s really nothing different than what you’d see in our own world. Not everyone gets a happy ending, things don’t always get better but there’s still a chance of it doing so. Absolutely can’t wait for Abercrombie to expand the world into the modern era

    Pretty dark compared to LotR, but nowhere near as bleak as ASOIAF or Witcher

  • @Icetubexd

    @Icetubexd

    8 ай бұрын

    @@PhoenixFireZero I disagree. ASOIAF is more gratuitous with it's violence and sex than First Law, but overall there are a lot more upstanding and honorable people in ASOIAF that give the whole world some hope for the future. First Law takes the approach that the Human Condition is for the most part unchangeable, there is no betterment and there will always have to be a bunch of people at the bottom rung of the ladder for everything to work, and you better get to used to it. Overall a lot more nihilistic than ASOIAF ever dared to be, at least in my opinion. All the character are greyer in The First Law as well, in ASOIAF you still have clear good guys (Starks, Sam, John, etc.) and clear bad guys (Euron, Ramsay, White Walkers, etc), I can't think of any First Law characters in the entire series (*maybe* except for 2) that would fit that description, instead they're all just human with very human faults and ambitions. I think that gives the series a darker vibe than the more fantastical approach to humanity in ASOIAF. About the Witcher I have no idea, you might be right. I didn't like the books at all and only finished one, so I can't say enough about it, but it was admittedly very bleak.

    You know, after stuff like the Wheel of Time and Middle Earth, it's nice to hear about the lore of a series without having the sensation that you need to take notes to follow what's going on. 1 creator god. 4 demigods. 12 mages. And the names of all of them are simple and easy to remember. I'm already liking the writing of this Joe Abercrombie guy. And I haven't read any of his work yet.

    Abercrombie's grounded and EXTREMELY human characters are the thing that really makes his stories stand out. That and the magic system. Magic in the world of the First Law is terrifying, and I feel like it really makes it that much more magical.

  • @Blisterdude123

    @Blisterdude123

    Magic is more like a force of nature that ultimately ruins and destroys the people who attempt to manipulate or control it, because it is by its nature so uncontrollable. Magic corrupts, but also it is corrupted BY the people who use it, keeping with Abercrombie's themes of humans being largely the most destructive force imaginable.

    I love the duality of the power and the risk Bayaz can make a person litterally just pop, not explode, just scatter across the room Set fire to a section of forest instantly Or create a huricane out of nowhere. But when he did the last one, he lost control of it, harming his allies, and knocking him into a Coma for a couple weeks. So its very poweful, but takes decades to learn, centuries to master, and a single mistake in using it, which can happen even for a master, can easilly kill you or worse

    I really love the series Joe Abercrombie wrote in the First Law, and I love that its getting notice from people outside of book clubs! I do disagree about the pronounciation a bit though. We have audiobooks fully endorsed by the author, and the narrator, Steven Pacey, has done a great job at lending a voice to the world. Magi is more like "May-jai" and Euz is more like "Ay-us." Its not a big deal of course! And sure most people actually read books instead of listening, but I wanted to offer that little tidbit. ^^

Bouncing from one soldier to another soldier, perspective to perspective as each is killed off, carrying and sweeping you across the battlefield with them. Literally following the assault and its momentum. He writes in words a way so cinematic I can't compare it to anyone else.

    That's what I call a pleasant surprise. The First Law is my absolute favorite, and Joe's my favorite contemporary author.

    Absolutely love this world. Can't recommend Abercrombie's work enough to anybody who will listen. Good coverage and information. I am excited for the next one!

    I love the dynamic with the brothers. It’s written quite well for just being stories, even in the books. Makes sense why Glustrod would be so frustrated. Euz kinda did him dirty, and Juvens and Kanadias kinda did too. Bedesh seemed sorta like the middle man. He agreed to help Juvens but only after Glustrod started slaughtering folk. And after Kanadias and Juvens disagreed on how to treat the seed he was like “stop fighting, I’ll give it to a spirit so we can all chill out, geez” 😂 Bedesh is low key my favourite son of Euz.

    I envy anyone who hasn’t read any of the First Law series. They have 9 books (basically three connected trilogies) to read. Unlike guys like GRRM, Rothfuss, etc., Abercrombie actually finishes his stories.

    One of the actual best book series, not just in the fantasy genre. Abercrombie is so fucking good at writing interesting, funny, and tragic characters, it's damn right unfair. The lore/backstory is not really important, though, tbh, as this series, unlike any other fantasy series, really focuses in on the characters, rather than just creating a big playground world.
