I’m American and I grew up in the UK. I married a wonderful Englishman. Before we married I told him that I wanted to move back to the USA. He was ok with moving to the States with me. He said that home is where I am. We moved to my home state of California. This was back in the 1980s. Back then California was not so expensive as it is now. We had two children while there. So 10 years later we moved to Colorado. We had another baby. Colorado became really really expensive as California. We moved to several other states. Now we live in the Houston area. We love it. There is plenty of work. We have been married since 1985. My husband has a very large family in the UK. He has been back 5 times to visit his family. I asked him if he wanted to move back to the UK. I thought it was only fair to offer as he left his family to move for me. He said that he was happy here in the states. Eventually he became a US citizen. I think we will stay in Houston. We love living here.

As a Katy-ite (a suburb of Houston), I had to check out your video. One of the biggest things we face is that our freeway frontage roads go in only one direction. This means that if you are going to a restaurant and you are on the freeway, you better make sure you get the exit BEFORE the restaurant because you cannot exit and double back on the same side of the road. You have to catch the next exit, do a turn around and head back the opposite direction on the freeway, pass the restaurant, exit, do a turn around, then stay on the frontage road rather than the freeway so you don’t pass it again! I’ll take roundabouts over this any day! Welcome to Texas!

I'm Texan and lived in Houston for about 18 years... the Hurricane/flooding issues are really the worst part. I went thru Hurricane IKE and Harvey. IKE did a lot of damage to our home. **Would like to hear your experience with Harvey!!** I was an Expat in Brussels for several years and I can relate to the culture shock. But we LOVED it. London is amazing!! And the chance to travel when you are so close to many amazing places is wonderful.. so take advantage of your time in the USA to travel more cheaply (than from overseas) Even tho we traveled extensively (about 15 countries) I still wish we had done more on the weekends. We would go to places like Amsterdam, Paris, Koln, etc. for the day. But since our girls were enrolled at the Int'l School of Brussels they had homework that had to get done many weekends and just wanted to relax. It is always a GREAT opportunity to live in another country!! Enjoy. Houston has much to see/do and some great museums. Your girls would probably enjoy the Zoo there! 😊

We had never experienced anything like that before and I could not stop watching the news channels in case we were evacuated. I just feel so sad for those who lost a lot during Harvey! Awesome that you’ve travelled and lived abroad. It really is a culture shock isn’t it but it’s crazy how quick you adapt to things. Yes we definitely have lots of plans to travel the US, especially before the kids starts school! Thanks so much for connecting. Yes, my kids love the zoo - as do I!! :)

Of course, where you live in Houston makes a big difference on your experience, but while you live here, enjoy the restaurants, parks, museum district, art, and culture. We are the most diverse city in the a United States! Also enjoy the affordability, your dollar stretches so far here. If you get sick of the city and concrete (I do), take weekend trips to Austin, Fredericksburg, San Antonio, Galveston, Round Top, and Wimberly. Our state parks are also wonderful in the fall and spring. Go tubing, camping, and antiquing before you leave. I promise there is a lot to do and see, but sometimes you have to drive to see it!

I'm a Brit too but my family moved to the U.S. (Southern California, Holly wood) when I was about 6. I spent most of my adult like in CA and lived there for about 30 years. I moved to Houston about 4 years ago to open up an office for the company I worked for at the time. What you say about Houston is pretty spot-on. It's not a very touristy kind of area unless you're there for the Rodeo. Houston is all about BUSINESS. If you want to find work especially in the medical, logistical, real estate, chemical, oil & gas, aerospace, finance and other fields, Houston is where it's at. This is why when Houstonians want to take a small vacation, they either go to San Antonio or Austin and the surrounding Hill Country between them. Houston also isn't very attractive but it isn't really the city's fault- due to being close to the Gulf, the weather can be over cast quite a bit and there is rain and correspondingly, many places don't have sidewalks and instead have gullies to help mitigate flooding. The people are amazing however as is the food! I'm a Loan Officer working out of Katy. I was going to ask if you wanted to buy a home but it looks like you got that covered already. If you know anyone who wants to buy or refinance, we have some great programs. Just look up Supreme Lending in Katy, TX and ask to speak to Mark.

Sorry, I'm so late in checking in on your video. Welcome to Houston! You live in a city that has the second-largest theater district (2nd only to New York City) in the nation, with ALL major full-time theater companies, Houston Grand Opera, Houston Ballet, Theater Under the Stars, Alley Theater, Houston Symphony, Houston Society for the Performing Arts, as well as several smaller theater companies scattered about the city. Houston's nightlife is quite busy. We also have all the major sports franchises, the Astros, the Texans, the Rockets, and the Dynamo. Our museum district is world-class, with all our major museums easily within walking distance of each other, and located near Hermann Park. Be sure to check out the Houston Children's Museum. You'll get caught up playing with the displays right along with your "little one". We have a plethora of institutions of higher learning, the most prominent are Rice University, the University of Houston, Houston Baptist, St. Thomas, San Jacinto College, Houston Community College, and over fifty more. Houston is the home of the world's largest medical center which employs 100,000 full-time workers in all professions and is home to the Texas Heart Institute, Texas Children's Hospital, and the world-renowned M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. The Texas Medical Center is also "ground zero" to the biomedical industry. Houston is America's #1 city for "Green Architecture" and park space. Our Memorial Park is two and a half times larger than New York's Central Park and is located close to Houston's new Buffalo Bayou Park. The Houston Zoo in Hermann Park is a world-class facility that is also instrumental in the preservation of endangered species and the protection of at-risk species. Houston is physically huge. Houston's total metro area makes us the largest city in the Western Hemisphere, yet with only 6.2 million people. We have room, here! The entire city of New York can easily fit inside our inner loop. And, with six "city centers" and skylines, not everyone is piled on top of each other at the same time. To top everything off, Houston is America's most diverse city. It wasn't planned that way. It happened honestly. Houston has always been a place of great opportunity. People from all over the world came here to work, start businesses, and raise families. After we all got here, we realized that we really like each other! WELCOME TO HOUSTON! I came here in 1968 from Cleveland, Ohio. I raised five kids here, and I feel so blessed that my life turned out the way it did. Enjoy yourselves!

robertwbingo thanks so much for the message! Yes, that surprised me when I moved here just how big the theater district is. I’m still yet to go but it’s on my plans for this year. We love the museum district and the zoo, and the kids especially love the children’s museum. I’ve been to see the astros and the rockets! We really do enjoy it here! Thanks for all the info :)

Interesting to hear your perspective on present-day Houston. I lived there from 1955 - 1966 (first grade through junior year of high school) in the Spring Branch area which was at the western edge of the city at the time. I have been back a few times over the years, most recently in 2017. Amazing traffic jams these days by comparison. I've lived in Idaho and Utah since 1977 and like those areas better. Mountains and far fewer people.

@@homeatclementine2547 It surely has. It actually changed a lot during the time I lived there. A huge change was related to the arrival of major NASA facilities in the early 60s. Lots of people came in from more northern states, transforming Houston from the overgrown cow town it was in many ways into the more cosmopolitan place it is now.
