When couples are starting off, they need all the money they can get, in America the father of the bride pays for the wedding, if parents can’t afford it they pay for the wedding themselves, the man takes care of the woman so no money is needed to be given to the parents.

I am American, and my fiancée is Ugandan. I had no problem with paying the bride price. What confused me was how much to offer her father. The only advice my fiancée could offer was "it comes from your heart". OK but still I need to know some average figure. US$500? US$5000? How much??? After much internet research, I finally found that the average bride price is 10M Ugandan shillings (about US$2700). This was offered, and accepted, plus various farm animals and a satellite TV set.

I'm Ugandan but I'm not gonna comment anything on this, this dowry thing depends on the family you're marrying into. It's not fixed by culture or tradition. Yes,it's respectable if bride price is paid, but "how much" varies from family to family. Period

With the biggest respect dear Monica. Isaac were staying 14 years with his father-in-law for the younger daughter, and another 6 years for the brought goods. The father didnt want his daughter to leave, after he loved Isaac and he didnt want him to leave either, thats why he set up strict rules. If you want to take an example from the Bible, this is amongst the most popular ``stories`` and it contains both cultures. Man-made culture. Not God-made. Apart from the story, yes i treasure my Wife, like i said Her value cannot be measured in worldly materials. Thank you for your comment, God bless you.

Good insight! In Africa if you don't provide dowry the family of the gal will never attach value to you the man (,bridegroom) taking their daughter. Embrace that if you need your wife not to feel out of place whenever she's among her own people and for you as a man to be respected in her family. There is no debate on this or else she'll always be considered as one who went through the ventilator instead of rightly walking through the front door into the man's house. That's said, it was nice you both came to an agreement and are now happily married, congratulations!!

Such an educational topic....I love it because all people need to learn and respect other people's culture. I am from an island in the Caribbean and we don't have dowry but the women's parents are expected to pay for the wedding process such as the dress, the food, the presentation for the party and the man is expected to provide and safeguard his wife and future family. I think it's wonderful when both parties are from 2 different cultures it's a great learning experience .In my eyes you both are the best youtube couple dowry or no dowry you will always have my vote on whatever decision you make 👍🏾 Liz and Atti you are the best....lots of Love for both of you from Bronx, NY

Yes, in Kenya it involves a lot including, education, age, purity. If the girl is more educated it’s more dowry the man pays, as well as if the girl is a virgin and never been married before it’s more dowry for the man to pay. It’s also more dowry if the bride is getting married with no children out of wedlock. Traditionally it’s also considered how well a girl could cook. The man is the one who pays for dowry and most of the wedding expenses, but sometimes both sides of the family form wedding committees between friends and family to help raise funds for the wedding . A man who do not pay dowry in some communities is sometimes disrespected, not considered man enough and May sometimes not even allowed to bury the wife incase she dies. Sometimes the man may not be fully considered as married if no dowry is paid and sometimes the parents of the girl can decide to stop the wedding when the buns are read in church due to lack of dowry payment. In most African communities Dowry is considered to strengthen the relationship between both families and an appreciation to the girl’s parents for raising a wife to the man, coz they consider the wife will be taking care of the man, cook for him, bear children and be a support to the man. To earn your respect as a man, getting married to an African woman, better pay that dowry😂 traditionally paid in cows, goats, gifts.

Am a South African, Ndebele culture. Same as Liz, but when coming to wedding, we value our traditional wedding, where groom has to marry a bride according to our custom slaughtering of cows done at bride home, exchanging cows and using cows bladder to unites our ancestors of both families. White wedding can follow just to celebrate with friends but traditionally wedding is very important to our culture and exchanging of gifts (umembeso) in our language

My culture is similar as Liz it's not about selling but makingva relationships to both families. Paying a dowry basically thanking bride family for raising a beautiful daughter and appreciation the beauty, Am a South African Ndebele culture, inbour culture when you marry a bride they are protocol to be followed by groom family since they are the ones who saw a beautiful flower. For examples changing gift (umembeso) where both families slaughter cows same day and exchange half of the cow to each family and both bride and groom binds by cows gall bladder that we called traditionally wedding and its the best Ndebele wedding, white wedding can follow just to celebrate with friends. Love my culture very much

Very informative. I agree it is a topic of much importance between multicultural couples. Being from the Caribbean, and as far as I know (please don't come get me if I am wrong, just saying what I know of), the wife's family is responsible for her and all things related to the wedding. From that day forward, the man "takes over" the support and care of the woman. Nowadays, most couples are both working, maybe even living on their own, some get married much later even, and parents (guardians) may not be around. Adult children move away from home to another country and settle there. In these cases the couple may set up their own funds to have their wedding (again, this is how I know and understand it, not negating the fact that other cultural differences exist). I have heard of dowry but never knew the process. As much as Atti didn't get into details as such, it was still clearer how that goes. I think it lovely either way, just respect as you both keep saying, and knowing before hand to avoid the shock and possible interpretation form the other party that you are in disagreement or even dispise their culture. So happy to see you all, esp Atti who has been missing in action for some time. ❤🇹🇹❤️

I strongly suggest that Atti should pick up some overtime shifts and come up with about $2,500 to $3,000 and take it to Liz's family. It won't hurt you nor diminish you. Some of these things have mystical power in them. Though you claim that you all came to a compromise, I'm 100% sure that there are significant people in Liz's family who are unhappy with the purported deal that you all made. When you love your wife be ready to go above and beyond to do such things for her. It won't change you brother man. In this same culture sometimes the woman earns way more than the man but the man must respect the culture. I have witnessed a case where the couple faced a misfortune, a very severe mishap.

  • @cram8441

There is no dowry in the western world or in the Caribbean, but the wife's family usually with the help of other friends and loved ones come together to do the wedding and to help to take care of all the important things pertaining to the wedding and the bridal shower and gifts that the bride and groom will need after they move into their home. Sometimes at home can be bought for them or they just rent an apartment or by an apartment but it's furnished partially with gifts that are given to the couple that they would need from friends and family and loved ones, like are fryer, blender mixer bedsheets bed-in-a-bag sets sent this household things, even furniture it depends on what one wants to give them as a gift to speed them on their journey in marriage. And the men can also help with the expenses or even shoulder the expenses if he wants to but when they come together as a couple to plan the wedding they make the decisions as to what they want to do and how much they want to spend and it's between the man and the woman to be married and then they get the family involved. I can understand the situation if an American or Westerner is marrying someone from Africa then they might get the dowry involved, but I believe that African culture should stick to Africa, and if you're marrying in the western world and you don't have to do Dowry. I have African friends from different parts of Africa that got married in the US and didn't do Dowry because it's not an American thing.

I really don't think being interracial has anything to do with dowry. In America, traditionally, the bride's family pays for the wedding. I think dowry exist in American culture. You guys are an awesome couple. This is the first step to working things out in your relationship. God bless you. I pray for the day you can live together as husband and wife.

Don't say its not a big issue for sure it is.I think if an African man marries a white woman then the brides family pay the dowry then its posible for our African men to think that they were married by the bride instead of them marrying the bride and I think may be they will not take marriage serious and will be reluctant to their duties as providers.its confusing somehow🤔

Liz girl, I love you, but it's not about how educated a girl is that shows how valuable a girl is to the husband matters dowry, a woman's value is so diverse and can't be pegged on education and that's why a man will choose a less educated woman over the other

Liz and Atti are so understanding of each other's culture respect each other's feelings, Atti's a great husband, who said his wife's worth can't be quantified, may God bless your union and bond you more divinely with eternity in view 🙏 ❤❤💙💙🤍🤍🌹🌹💜💜🔥🔥🙏.
