Our Chicken Breeds
We get asked a lot about our different chicken breeds and which ones are best for chicken owners. The answer depends on you! Some people want lots of eggs. Others want pretty chickens. And some want the friendliest chickens. In this video, we review some of our many breeds, and talk briefly about egg laying, colors, temperament, and health characteristics of each bird.

Our Salmon Faverolles are almost like dogs-talks to you, follows you everywhere. have also found they are super curious, and pretty smarty-one day forgot to open pop door to run/nesting box and big coop door had blown shut-she couldn't get in to lay her egg-raised a ruckus and when we took too long to investigate came and raised a bigger ruckus at back door and pecked door-when I went out she ran to coop! smart girl knew she needed her human!
I keep Speckled Sussex. Looking maybe to get a flock of Dorkings together. Great birds!

@@joelandmichellehomestead365 Dorkings are an Engish breed like the Sussex. They share the same temperment as the same genetic lineage. The also have five toes. Red Dorking Roosters are dazzling in color. I bought my flock in late July. Very nice birds and pretty rare in the US.
Loved seeing all the breeds. We’re just getting back into chickens. Currently have about 15 different breeds.,
It’s interesting hearing other peoples experience with different breeds. Our Easter Eggers are not a bit flighty at all and lay nearly daily. I’ve heard other folks say Rhode Island Reds are aggressive but we had a flock that were as friendly as could be. The one consistency seems to be Speckled Sussex. Always friendly and relaxed which has been our experience as well.

Absolutely! We've found that EEs seem to get friendlier with age. And so many say RIRs are aggressive, but we've had several roosters who have all been sweethearts!

@@HappyWifeAcres I’ve wondered if localities could affect breed traits? Most of the aggressive RIR I’ve heard of are from the East coast. Here in the west they all seem to be very docile. I don’t know, I just find it interesting 😎
We plan on getting chickens for our suburban backyard this coming spring and want to thank you for such an informative video! I think we are going to start with Buff Orpingtons and Black Australorps, since they seem friendly, calm and quiet. We would go with all Buff Orpingtons, but we think the addition of Black Australorps will give us more eggs.
Great video. Thanks for sharing . Would love to see more of your hybrids .

I really like this video. So many chicken breeds and great info to go along with them.
Awesome vid. Thanks for taking the time!
My Easter Egger is a good layer, but so flighty! I had six, one of the six was extremely smart and friendly. She figured out if I was working in the yard I would uncover bugs, and she would come running and stay right there all day. She was very flashy colored with a great crest. I named her Trumpy.

I found the best way to tame the flighty ones is remember why they that way it is simply fear, just sit with them feed them just hang out with them over time they will initiate contact with you. never force a interaction, that just scares them more. my hamburg I had no idea how to tame so I didnt try,now she is way more trusting of me, and sometimes jumps onto my shoulder and looks me in the eye. she is so cute. my others are the same the more you interact but dont force it the tamer they become.

Yet flighty birds will still be flighty. It's not that you can't tame a Leghorn or Easter egger just as you've said, I've done it too, it just takes more of what you said and for longer with certain flighty breeds. You can tame a wild Pheasant or a cottontail if you spend enough time with them, but they'd still be flighty as compared to something like a puppy. Then you have to consider the value of your time, and how much time you have to convert your most flighty egg producers into pets or how much time you could have saved if you wanted pets by just starting with Orppingtons or Australorps

I agree with you! I have 2 Easter Eggers and they are so sweet! One is certainly the top of the pecking order and layed her first egg at 4mo. She is very smart as well as my other Egger. I also have 2 silver laced Wyandotte's which one is flighty and the other will jump on your shoulder whether you are ready for her or not. The one that is very friendly is another one who started laying 2 weeks after my egger at 4mo. Then I ended up getting one Rhode Island and a black sex link/ black Star. They are 2 weeks younger then the other 4. They are both flighty and stick together. But everyone of my girls follow me everywhere I go. They even try to run in the house with our dogs. I watched one of my wyandotte's running back and forth with my dog(doberman pinscher). So I think every chicken is different and it absolutely helps when you sit with them and have a little time to hang out with them.

The first one you showed looked more like an Ameraucana --they have the blue/slate-colored legs, whereas the Eastereggers have yellow legs.
Could you do a video on what you do for your health check? What you’re spraying on them? And how often you do it? 🤷🏼♀️ I know that’s asking a lot 😅

Thanks for that. Good idea. For now, I’ll describe what we did. We physically picked up the every bird to look them over. Some got sprayed with an animal friendly mite spray. We separated out “old hens” for processing a few days later. Roosters got spurs removed (and the hen too!). We checked for foot infections. We removed poop stuck to butts or feathers. Each one got counted. With help, it took about 4 hours for 325 birds.

It depends on the hatchery line you have for the general bird temperaments. My Easter Eggers have always come from Townline Hatchery, have not been flighty, have the most curiosity and personality, are not bullies, lay 5 or 6 eggs a week from February through November, rarely go broody and molt fast. My Wyandottes have never been flighty and are always friendly. They are poor summer layers, but phenomenal winter layers.

That's good to hear. We have found that the flighty birds really mellow as they get older. Our best behaved and friendliest birds have always been ISA Browns. They seem to follow us around like lost puppies.
8:05 I have 15 silkies hens and 2 Silkie roosters and I can tell you with out a doubt they do NOT lay white eggs. They lay small shinny light tan eggs. P.s love your variety of hens. 👍

We used to have some mongrel Easter Eggers and I swear they laid through the winter
I would be interested in the following . Introduction of full grown Hen to an array of finding ones place in the established hierarchy . Female chickens having to compete find a place or die. I think possibly the dominant were the hardier from constent dependability breeding or layiing eggs The expensive breeds 🤔 mainly breed for beauty 🤔 can not compete in a peaking order environment. That is why they are rare farmed chicken or cooped.
Very nice birds guys thank you for showing us different breeds..happy farming God bless 🙌

You're in a pretty brutal windy area. I'll bet the winters are pretty brutal , too? For birds, it's not the cold. It's the damn WIND. My dad had Barred Rocks (larger than him) in nw Ontario and winters could get two weeks of minus 55 below and colder. but wind i snot an issue, like Oklahoma. Have a photo of dad from 1927 with his birds.

Winters aren’t too bad but we get spurts of very cold temps, then it warms up the next week. So very sloppy most of the time. Same with wind. Gale force winds then calm. The birds survive though.
Which rooster breed does (not) pick on or bully the hens?

@HappyWifeAcres

The solution in the bottle is a Permethrin solution. We use it to control mites and other parasites. Permethrin is commonly used on farms and can be ordered online or found in farm stores. Chickens regulate their temperature when their feathers are dry. Wet feathers trap heat and will kill your chickens in hot weather. The Permethrin spray evaporated quickly and it was a cool spring day. We use fans in hot weather, and make sure there's plenty of shade and placed to dust bathe. Definitely don't wet down your chickens!

Strange my wyandotte are calm and not flighty at all.
Hold the chicken not from the legs but put both hands on the wings.
My neighbors have several laying hens - I think Rhode Is Reds, and just one rooster who doesn't know how to crow properly and never will because he is a solo act. It's a known fact songbirds learn their songs while young by listening to more experienced members of their species and a bird is a bird so this also applies to chickens. So every AM around seven or so I can hear his plaintive wail, a 2-note cry as almost if for help as he struggles to be the alpha (easy for him with no competition) while the rest of us wince at his pitiful off-key wail. And it isn't the first time. On a small rural street there have been a few other attempts by residents with similar results. If only they cared about more than just eggs. * sigh* I love birds, all kinds but I don't eat them. Thank you for the information and the facts I need to avoid that old trap of shopping by looks and ignoring other traits. A pretty bird that's skittish and flighty is one we soon tire of and life's too short to learn that way. I've heard about Buff Orpingtons and have always loved Barred P.R.'s. With a lightly-wooded half-acre... setting up a small coop and a moderate run isn't an insurmountable task for my retirement. Just want to keep it small for quality over quantity and hope to form some species to species bonds. Again thanks for the tips and will keep them in mind if /when I ever go shopping for hens.

@@billygoat56.92 Really thanks for the response. Am just learning about the value of having a few Black Australorps as a kind of "reverse-scarecrow" team to ward off predators like hawks who generally avoid crows, mistaking them for those. Burt what I had in mind when I referred to the "trap" of falling into the "looks-over-personality" snare... one breed I had in mind to be avoided were in fact Wyandottes, who someone had said were high-energy, flighty and aggressive when compared with the gentler ones like Orpingtons or even Barred Rocks. I guess it all depends on whom you ask. Consensus in this business seems a bit elusive I am finding.
