If I remember correctly, you have a huge alternator. It's going massively under utilized by that 30A DC-DC charger. Victron has a new 50A DC-DC unit as well as a different model that can do 100A. One of those would reduce engine runtime to put more power back into your batteries.

  • @DanniandJoe

We upgraded the alternator to a 70a - with the intention of running 2 x 30a DC DC chargers but we’ve had issues with the alternators bracket & belts, it’s not quite in line so struggles with the single 30a at the minute. From what people have said 70a is about the limit for these old BMC engines

The trouble with lead acid is it needs to go into float for few hours after it appears to be fully charged, lifepo4 doesn't need to be floated so takes less time to charge AND more importantly not floating lead acid shortens its life, lifepo4 doesn't care 👍

Great subject, I have been thinking about moving away from lead acid batterys, the only thing that I haven't got my head around yet is how the Alternator will cope. I believe LiFeP0 batteries have a different DC resistance to lead acid and therefore the Alternator see's them as a 'Flat' battery and will always output full charge, not good for your alternator. I guess you have a gizmo that deals with this?

  • @DanniandJoe

    @DanniandJoe

    6 ай бұрын

Yeah we installed a Victron DC/DC charger before we’d ever thought of LiFeP04, which was handy as it basically regulates it like you said & is customisable to whatever type of batteries you use I just put the setting to LiFeP04 & it works. Only thing at the minute is our alternator puts out 70a, we’ve got a single 30a DC DC charger so potential to fit another one to double the output but the alternators slightly out of line so the belts slipping pretty badly unless you ease the charger in. I’ll try and get round to fixing it at some point 😫

I have been using an Ecoworthy 100AH LifePo for about 4 months at home, DC to DC Voltage and current controlled charging from off peak electricity during the night, and using it mainly to run my Computer. I intend to get some Solar panels to help top it up during daylight. Nice set up. Currently building some Battery packs from used 18560 Laptop batteries. Testing is a nightmare looking for potential bad cells that get warm. Good luck with it all.

15 year battery life is amazing - a case of battery tech coming of age! Have you considered changing your charge alternator? I believe they function the same as a car/van alternator, so if you measure the mountings, mountings to pulley alignment and space available you could make a point of dropping into a few scrap yards - especially as you cruise through cheaper areas. Cars typically run around 100 amp alternators nowadays and diesels a little less. With a smart charging system you shouldn't need to worry about it being overpowered - it should shut off when charged and in doing so it will take the load off the engine of the more powerful alternator.

You did good. Those are 280ah cells LFP cells. 4 s for yours which is 4 cells. Same ones I have but I built my own with the cells. I have 64 cells which make 4 16s packs at 48 volts(really not 48 volts they are 58.4 in truth) 1 year and I have not seen any drop in capacity. I would suggest getting another one and dividing the load using a busbar. See they can stay lower in voltage and be fine unlike lead acid.

  • @DanniandJoe

If you have the funds I would put another battery in as you inverter is 3000w to be on safe side. And also get a victron battery temp sensor so if it’s cold so it doesn’t try charging and damage the lithium batteries. Great setup by the way. Send the lead acid to the graveyard lol

At first I was wondering how you figured out the equivalent Lifepo to lead-acid values, until I saw how far each can be discharged. Still, a lead-acid battery can discharge to 50 percent while a Lifepo and go to 20 percent....so I guess to your are just keeping it simple by doubling the value, and gaining a bit of capacity as well.

Hi Guys, hope the new year brings both of you better luck. With regard to your OLD batteries. In your situation the batteries were either 'Matt' or 'Gel' type deep cycle batteries (you should never use WET Cell batteries as they emit flammable HYDROGEN gas; not good for combined spaces) Now, a 12v DC battery is fully charged at about 13.7v. However, once the charge has fallen to between 12v and 11.5 volts the battery is only at 20% capacity and continued use WILL start to damage the battery. There is a device avaiiable that will shut down the 12v system when it reaches that critical stage. I have a caravan which can be likened to a land narrow boat; same system, same circumstances. My 'Matt' deep cycle batters (2x110AH) lasted me 8 years. Not familiar with the lithium batteries, but I believe they'll give you good service. All the best for the upcoming 2024.

BMC 1500's alternator drive pulleys will only cope with 75a or so before they start suffering from chronic slipping issues. I know Joe's had belt issues in the past, so assume they're probably running something in that region. There are dual alternator brackets, but they're rare and possibly not a good idea on an older engine. Otherwise, I'd agree, as lithiums will take charge faster.

As you appear to know more about dc dc chargers can I ask your advice on mine? .. I have 3x130ah AGM batts and at the moment are charged via a victron Orion 30amp charger, I can’t afford to replace it for a larger output version but was thinking maybe getting the small 20amp Renogy dc dc charger to run alongside the victron? Do you think that would work to improve my charge rate? Cheers

Yeah we’ve got an uprated alternator but as they mentioned above our belt and bracket system is struggling with 30a DC-DC alone as the minute - I’m going to try and get that sorted then there’s potential for the second unit for sure!

I have the same engine on my boat as Danni and Jo, the BMC 1500 was never designed to take a massive alternator, I’ve had to upgrade my pulley system just to allow a 90amp Bosch alternator to be fitted, mine is an early “non smart” alternator. To allow enough adjustment movement I’ve had to file away some aluminium off the alternator bracket to give it enough swing to tighten the belt… mine happily feeds the Orion 30amp dc dc charger, although I would love to have more current but having 3xAGM I doubt would accept your example of 60amps

Are you running dual alternators, 1 for leisure, 1 for starter, if running 2 alternators What are you using to protect your leisure alternator?? The lifepo4 will constantly pull the full charge from the alternator until the BMS goes into over voltage and shuts the lifepo4 down, the alternator will still be providing max output with nowhere to go eventual frying the alternator??

We’re using Victron Orion DC-DC charger inbetween the starting battery and leisure battery. Had it installed since the original batteries were in

Hi Joe and Danni, hope you have a wonderful Chrismas! I don't recommend using lithium batteries, I have seen so many of these catch on fire in cars. They put out explosive deadly gas at that point. The fire is so hot it can can't be put out and the high temperatures can cut through steel and concrete. As mounted in your setup, the odds of failure are lower than in a car due to reduced vibration, lower surge and charge currents, and less temperature extremes. You will need something to limit charge current from your alternator to about 50 amps. Since you had problems with killing the lead-acid batteries before, you may still have the same problem. Solar output power is considerably less during the winter months so, charging has to be supplemented by shore or generator power (either by alternator or portable generator).

Thanks John! Happy Christmas & new year! Sorry to hear about your fall that sounds awful. Yeah we’ll be on the boat this year, maybe the odd adventure thrown in along the way but we’re not 100% sure what yet!
