My uncle passed his test in the late 70's. I remember him saying his instructor sent him round the block several times while he stood on the pavement, smoking. Apparently, it took 5 minutes to go round the block. Went past him 3 times... 😂 As long as you didn't hit anyone, or another vehicle, you passed!

Back in 81 I had a Suzuki TS 250 for a year. Then they reduced the cc to 125. Passed on a 125 with examiner stood on corners watching. Over the years I had a ZH 400, ZH 500, Z650, CB900, GPZ1100, GPZ 1000 RX, then a GSXR 1100. 25 year break & have just bought a Z 900. It's so much harder these days for the youngsters. A friend who is 33 failed his first test, run out of time & had to do the training all over again. I think it cost me about £12 for the test, It has cost my friend nearly 2k to get his licence.

As an x instructor the test scheme is laughable, if your able to pass on a 47hp asking people to take the SAME TEST on a heavier more powerful bike is a joke, thank the EU for this legislation.

let’s take for example yamaha tracer 700 (A) and honda cb 500 x (A2). the only difference is between these bikes are cc and little bit more power (20 kw) for tracer(they weight the same) . I have to say there is not much difference between them in terms of handling and weight . In my feeling it is super silly take same test and it is mostly done for money.

Yes, when you have full A license you could ride 200 bhp+ bike straight away , but it’s not the way for most of the people. Buying 200 bhp + bike straight after passing the test is very silly idea… In my feeling , majority of riders buy something in 650-800 cc range and progress with cc and power, which is not much different compared to the most powerful A2 bikes. I personally done my test on Kawasaki Z650 and KTM Duke 790 and ridden CB 500( i did feel that bike has little bit less power , but not much)

The insurance cost issue is so prohibitive, but would recommend buying the next bike with the view of keeping it 3 years, will help concentrate your mind to what you want. I managed to get round my money concerns by using bikers maths. My annual train ticket and car parking would have cost me more than the total cost of a brand new Triumph scrambler 400, even on PCP, insuring it and buying a top box. So did that, and have now convinced myself that the savings for the next three years train tickets should go towards to a weekend ride this summer. Where there is a will, there is a way to justify...

DAS passer here. passed last year and bought a bmw s1000r in September 23 (FIRST BIKE) and insured it. Insurance was diabolical I pay. £3000 GBP for the year. However this probably partly my fault based on choice of bike (cc, and model also doing so soo soon after just passing my full license) If you've taken a mod2 honestly don't be scared to get a bigger bike, is my advice from someone who passed the whole DAS course first attempt from theory all the way to mod2. Just be mindful of your actions and confident.

Ella I much prefer riding a slow bike quickly than a fast bike slowly, I also prefer a light and nimble bike for the Peak District lanes I ride on, I've just swapped a relatively heavy 500 that I hardly ever rode for a new Honda CB300R and I now enjoy riding again. Bigger and faster is not necessarily better. Staying on your current bikes for 2 years will make you better riders. I'm here for the waffle and it is nice to see young women interested and passionate about your motorcycles, you remind me of Red Renna who also had a knack of talking in an engaging manner, well done on hitting nearly 2,000 subs in such a short time frame. There's a few things, There are proposals from bike manufacturers, sadly they have zero influence on Gov decision making, so chances of the courses or test requirements changing anytime within the next 4-5 years is very very low. The reason for the graduated licences on bikes vs cars is quite simple really - death rate of the rider. Before they brought in CBT and graduated licences the average life expectancy of new riders was measured in months... I'm 41 and doing my DAS at the moment, sadly failed my Mod 1 couple of weeks ago after clipping a cone - ce la vie, but even when I have the licence sorted it'll prob be a Ninja 400 or something for a first bike for a year or two. Side note, love the videos, you give us introverts and bag of nerves / solo riders hope - sadly all my local clubs ban 125 riders so solo rides it is for me till I pass!

In New Zealand we can ride up to 660cc and 47hp on a learner licence, and there are a few options there, the bike I would like to get is starting to become a classic now, it's the Suzuki SV650, which can be restricted to meet those requirements, and of course it's over the 599cc you talk about so you would have no problem riding it to the test, and doing the test... where we can't ride the bike to the test, it has to be taken there by other means, or use a supplied bike if the place has them available, and not all of them do.

I am older so moved to a smaller bike - BMW310R - just feel more comfortable pushing it around. If I pull a muscle it takes sooo long to get better! 😀

I do feel for you. My daughter is 13 and is hating the fact she’s gonna have to do a stepped structure. She wants a big bike like dad. I’m lucky to have done CBT at age of 45 and did my Mods 6 months later

So glad I came to riding at 60, less hoops to jump through and cheaper insurance. I would stick with Noxy for longer and keep costs down till you pass the full A and then let rip:)

Ive had bikes for years, think I’ve owned about 10 in all, when I done my test, the tester stood on a corner with he’s clipboard 😂 , so different to now, just sold my Zx6r 2001, I’ve just upgraded now to a z1000sx, the Zx6r was a great bike (Bullet proof) maybe old but very capable in the right hands, and I wanted something to get back into bikes again, and was fine for commuting too I found, and also much cheaper than the new / newer bikes, save your cash get something like the Zx6r… 😊also get that insurance ncd that will help whatever you decide. Me and my partner just passed out CBT and at the end of the month getting some r125s. Proberbly see yous about as we're super local to your area. Will stick with the CBT for about a year first before thinking about moving on

Hi I'm a bit to old for the A2 licence but would just like to say think two tests are a EU Joke ride a 40 brake horsepower bike for a calendar year and from there sould be able to buy what you like the only thing that realy changes Is top end speed which very few use fully in uk and more importantly weight we need you young people to embrace the passion not sure the government does so keep doing what your doing its great ride free

I’m in a similar position I’m 22 just done my a2 but was on a l plates for a year. just got a bandit 650 restricted gonna get another 2 year no claim bonus and I also wanna get the zx6r eventually hopefully I can get a cheap insurance quote when it comes to it

The ER-6f (Ninja 650r (early model US name) or Ninja 650 newer models), are great bikes but the early gen 1's 2006 to 2008 were the best models, they tweaked them after to soften the throttle response. I had a 2008 for three years, awesome fun first big bike. They also keep up with bigger bikes very well, loads of vids of my old one playing with all kinds of bikes if you fancy a look when you get extremely bored lol

@@odinswolf1969 Such easy bikes to launch and throw around twisty roads, especially with Renthal ultra low bars. I rode with an S1krr, K1300s an MT-10 and ZX10r's etc etc with it and even when they wanted to have some real fun. They only really put a gap between them and me once I got to the ER-6f's top speed, had it from 2018 to 2021

I have had a bike since I was 17 and stayed on 125 till 25 and did my direct access got A license and went out the day after and bought a 600 I still have it I am 35 now and have 600 and a DTM 900 my problem with insurance is “diabetic” as soon as that is mentioned it doubles so yeah it’s hard for new riders I have 9+ years no clams and my insurance is still 1000 a year. It’s the government they like to make things extremely hard. Sorry I went on rant

Hi hi, been a diabetic type 1 for 58 years, loved having my 4 bikes for 4 years 1979-1983,, then needed cars raised 4 children, driven a car for 42 years now want to have some pleasure in life for the last part, adore the countryside on a bike, love the sense of freedom, lost my car over a year ago could not afford the stupid amount to fix it £4000 + labour, i am housebound can only walk a very little distance now, due to the 58 years as type 1, and major heart surgery. if i am gonna go soon, want just a little time back on a bike ;), but geez, CBT to do, then all to get an A2 all the cost:(,, should have got my full licence in the 80's:), SO, trying to save a little at a time as best as possible to get there, with best wishes, stay safe, enjoy the freedom.

i started riding back in the 80s. when learners could have 250cc bikes. work paid for my driving test so i could drive the vans and truck got married and kids so bike went car came. finally got a bike again a few years ago and did the direct access, as i never got around to passing test when younger. took test on a Kawasaki Z650. (great bike)looked at loads of bikes too. Either cost a lot to buy or insure. i ended up with a Honda CBF600S had that a few years but traded it in for a Honda Rebel 500 last year. shoulder injury from years ago and short legs stopped me getting a lot bikes. but loving the rebel. do i miss the extra power of the 600. only on motorways. other than that the Rebel outshines it in smiles per mile. nice Vlog and now a new subscriber

I just turned 24 this week, got my DAS booked in for 2 weeks from now, already got a 900c Triumph, ready to get out on her this summer. I do find it a bit silly that someone like you or your brother has their bikes power restricted because of their age when you have more riding experience than a newbie like me, yet I am the one allowed to go and get whatever I want, hopefully the government change it and make it fairer for younger riders.

I feel you. passed my A2 bought my Honda Crf250l with 3 years no claims £365 per year one payment and after that ran out I’m 21 with 4 years no claims on a 2020 ktm duke 390 and since it’s so new and expensive it’s costing me £700 for one payment on 3k miles

I know the pain. I’ve been riding since last august on a CBT and (1) don’t want my L plates anymore, (2) I want to be able to take a passenger, and (3) I’m hoping I can bring my insurance down so I’ve got my A1 license booked for July. I’ve got an MSX125 Honda Grom and I feel so underpowered already. I’m thinking (once I’ve done my A2 next year) I’ll upgrade to the CBR500R. I’m also short and it’s one of the lower sports on the market (especially with the lowering kit) but you made a good point about wanting to be on your own bike. I think I have to accept using their bike for my A2, otherwise I’ll be without my mode of transport leading up to it. As you said though, if I got the 650 I would be able to use my own bike for the A licence when I’m 21. Ahh too many things to think about 😂😂

Im on a a2 and ive got a harley dyna "restricted"😉 insurance is crazy but im a bit of a mong.

Here in the Netherlands there is an option to get an A2 license that turns into an A license after 2 years, but you can only do that when you're 21 years old. That's what I went for, but it honestly should be the standard for everything. It would also help cut down on the wait lists for exams, because those are big over here.

There use to be a similar idea here in the UK years ago, where you passed and had a bhp restriction for two years, after that you could ride any power, so a lot of people got bikes with more power and had em restricted by a dealer, then got it removed after the 2 years

19 and a half give or take, I've just passed my a2 license but I haven't got a bike yet as insurance is crazy and frankly not sure what to get. Stuck between a 300CC ish bike a 500CC ish bike or a 650CC bike and restrict it as I do hope to do my full A licsense when im about 21.

I passed my test in 1987 on a cb100 which then allowed me to jump on my friends gpz 1000 so i fully understand why restrictions are in place, but to do the same test over and over makes no sense, apart from as you say, money. I think if i was in your position i would stick with what you have until such time you can ride anything. The issue with power is that you get used to it, even an R1 feels less powerful when you get used to it. With group rides normally the less powerful bikes takes the lead and everyone else follows them so nobody gets left behind. ❤

I see you Ladies like and ride the sports bike layout a question the bigger the engine capacity and the faster these bikes can go is the insurance more expensive.

I did my A on an A2 bike, z650 which was strange but instuctor and examiner said it was fine. I think i would get my full licence, stick with noxy for a year or two and then look at getting that inline 4 screamer you seem to be edging towards.😜✌🏻

@@TipToeBikers my fault. I was editing as you replied. Might be worth keeping old noxy and saving as much as you can for a year. See what you can afford then. Learn what to look for when buying second hand and pick up a 10 or so year old 600, as stock as possible and make it your own.

The licence debacle! It is a mix of politicians not knowing and want to have control , for some strange reason. They mostly don`t have any ide of how bikes work or how they are to ride, the same type of people that says they could never own a motorcycle, because they wold ride it fast all the time, they think it is like sitting in car, they don`t understand the noise the wind and the hard work it is to ride a bike fast. To the second part, i wold ride the bike you have now for two years so you get a lot of experience on one bike, it helps in the long run and save up for a upgrade later. Have you tried Bikesure through Usernamekate? Good luck whatever you choose to do and keep up the great work!

I tried Bikesure when I was first looking at quotes but they weren't the best offer for me at the time. Will probably be switching companies regardless of whether I change bikes or not at the end of the year though, so I'll re-look :)

I believe you can get a full A Licence if your 24 or over and don't have any other licences regarding bikes. I could be wrong on that though.......... Either way I am getting a 2 wheeler one day.

We have a similar setup here in Sydney. I played the waiting game - First bike was a Ninja 300 (rode that for 2 years) and then upgraded to a Street Triple RS (definitely worth the wait). Out of curiosity, how would a person get an A licence if your choice of bike is something like a ZX4RR?

I live in Finland right now & working on getting my bike license, I decided to wait until I turn 24 so I don't need to spend all the extra money on all the upgrade classes & exams :') definitely a bit intimidating to start directly on a CB650R (driving school's bike) without ever having ridden a motorbike before, but it's so quick to get the hang of. My biggest concern is getting the u-turns within the required turn radius in my handling exam next week :'D Interesting that the earliest you can get an A license in the UK is 21 though, here you can get it at 20 (if you get your A2 at 18) edit; forgot to mention, bought a 2021 MT-07 last weekend as my first bike, a bit of a bigger one for sure but any bike is as safe as its rider! the insurance costs are painful though

Its better to just get an older bike which can either make you money or at least get the same back. I ride CBR600 and will get back what I paid. Save your money till you are ready for your first litre bike.

I feel for you both and the new riders . I think its not just about money making but trying to put people off bikes making it harder to do and only the people that want a bike will jump through the hoops our great UK Gov ... cough .... cough ... put you through. I started riding at 16. I was 18 when I passed my bike test ( did my car first ) but didnt get a bigger bike straight away, as I didnt have much money / income. finding the right bike is hard enough without restrictions. me I would stay on the 250 for 2 years take the test on a loan bike and then get the one you want when you have no restriction. by the way on paper my first real bike after the 100cc was the Kawasaki GPZ750 turbo PMSL it took me 4 months to get used to the power lol ( I did test a lot before getting it )

insurance prices are a joke. i passed my DAS route in December just after i turned 25. I bought a 2006 cbr600rr and my insurance is 2 grand. luckily i have a company car otherwise i wouldn't have a hope in hell affording that kind of insurance

Will I get hate mail if I mention that when I took my motorcycle licence test, (In 1982.) it was a 10 minute ride with the examiner following me in a car? I do remember being in lunch time traffic at the time and never getting out of 3rd gear..🤪🤪. No written tests, not even a five minute spot test, flicking through the "Highway code" and it cost £5.00 for the whole thing. Oh and you could buy 4.5 litres of leaded 5 star petrol for 51p........! 🤣🤣.

Its only a money grab... Passed my bike license at 16, went from a Suzuki A100 to a Honda interceptor 500 (wish I still had it) , a 16year old on a 500cc, god it was fun. ( Bike was my dads, but I was allowed to ride it)..

In the US, you can take the MSF course in 3 days, pass it, go to the DMV get your license, and you can go buy an R1. 😂 No middle ground between us and you guys which does seem a bit extreme.

Licences are a joke. I opted to wait until I could do it in one go and do the das. It should go back to the scheme where it’s one test and then length of riding will unlock different class of bikes without additional tests

To do it on your own bike, you'll have to have it derestricted at the test centre

The duplicate tests for the current A2 is ridiculous yeah, it's purely a money grab. I've got no problem with the old A2 system in general, where you pass your test and ride for two years on slower bikes, and then are good to go. It's having to go through all the hassle, and expenses, and waiting times, that really gets on my wick. I /just/ missed out on the old A2 system. My best mate snuck onto it but by the time I found out it was changing, all the schools were booked up solid for about 6 months with people trying to get through before it changed, and I realistically didn't have the money to hand anyway. As such, my mate did his A2 at 17, riding a 125 incidentally, and was fully licensed at no extra cost at 19. I meanwhile had to do a second CBT at 18, then my A2 at 19, and then my A at 21. Incredibly frustrating.

Said this on a previous video, stepped licensing is a waste of everyone’s time and money. You have to really want to ride a bike to see it through to the full licence.

The reason your doing what you're doing is because the government hates bikes, and always have 🙄

It’s a really crap situation for everyone in your situation, my advice is just stick with it, enjoy riding as much as you can because you’ll get your dream bikes at some stage in the near future. 👍🏻🫶🏻
