Otto von Bismarck - A Man of Great Ideas - Extra History - Part 2

📜 History of Otto von Bismarck, Part 2
1848. Revolution swept Europe as the working class rose up to claim their freedoms from an oppressive ruling class. But as a member of that ruling class, Bismarck had some resistance to this movement. He channeled his wild energy into productive avenues, gradually becoming the man of realpolitik that we know today.

Cool. There was a saying about the Revolutions of 1848--"When France sneezes, Europe catches a cold." That's in reference to the fact that a revolution in Paris always spreads to other parts of Europe. The same could apply to the Arab Spring in 2011--when Cairo went into revolution, the rest of the Arab world followed suit.

+Franz Luggin - Most national anthems contain some level of oddity... The French national anthem openly glorifies murder, the German one is as xenophobic as they come, the Dutch one talks about loyalty to the king of Spain, the Spanish one talks about bugger all because it's entirely instrumental, the Italian one is probably fine when it comes to the lyrics, but sounds like the kind of music you typically hear coming out of a barrel organ in a city centre, and the US one talks about how great it is to have bombs and rockets dropped on your head...

Elevate a six-year-old to the throne without asking his mom? Sure! That kind of chutzpah is one of the most important qualities a great leader needs. However, Bismark still lacked another equally-vital quality: Not failing at basically everything.

How he steps on Britain's shore and instantly leaves, comes back with twice as many soldiers and gets beat. It like main stream media only thinks of him as over throwing democrac republic when in reality, he over threw a corrupt anti system, ran by powerful family that was anything but a republic.

That was a tradition in the Brandenburg line of the Hohenzollern that goes beyond Friedrich II (the Great). Friedrich was a frequent name even in the medieval beginnings of the house, while the combination "Friedrich Wilhelm" is probably an homage to the Great Elector ("Großer Kurfürst"), Friedrich Wilhelm I of Brandenburg. Naming traditions like these (with changes every few centuries or so) are quite common in German ruling houses. The Thuringian House Reuß turned this up to eleven with naming _every_ male member of the family "Heinrich" (and coming up with some confusing schemes to limit the numbers).
