【About Asian Small-clawed Otters】
First, otters are different from sea otters.
Sea otters spend most of their time in the water, but otters can live both on the ground and in water.
A few years ago, trafficking otters became a serious problem, and in 2019, CITES (Washington Convention) increased the classification of otters from CITESⅡ to CITES I, which banned international trade.
Having an otter as a pet is illegal in most countries. However, in Japan, otters can be traded, although it is limited to domestic breeds only.
Currently, severe restrictions are in place for buying and selling otters in Japan. For example, microchips need to be inserted in both babies and parents, and owners need a special permit. Circumstances of birth must also be reported in detail.
As a result, there is currently no buying and selling of baby otters in the market. There is a severe penalty for selling and buying otters with unknown birth origins without permits. This was effective in eliminating trafficking, and we don’t see otter trafficking on the news anymore.
Kotaro and Hana were both born in Japan and have permits.
It is so much work to have an otter as a pet. You need to be ready for more than its cuteness. They are loud, and they sometimes bite you. Food and water get very expensive, and you cannot keep otters in cages because they are active. Also, we never leave them at home. We always look after them closely like we do with human children, and our top priority is always them.
If you want to have an otter as a pet, you must be able to follow the law and devote your life to it. If you don’t have that resolve, you should never have one as a pet.
Thank you

That was super weird that children preferred playing with otters' toys while completely ignoring unbelievably cute otters. It was awkward to watch, like something's wrong with these kids. I hope their apathy toward living creatures isn't representative of today's Japanese kids.

@@notmyname3556 I think that was more likely it too. The older child sat as patiently as she could and stayed as still as she could at first when attempting to meet them. The ignoring of the otters occurred more in the middle of their stay. Then they opened up more as they all got used to how each other moved. at 5:18 I loved it when the boy adjusted his movements and then let the otters sniff his hair as well while staying close to the floor on his tummy. The communication at that point was really good.

First of all, these children are gorgeous, and I love all the lemons on the family’s clothes. Second, they are so well-behaves, and the fact that they just played with the toys at first gave the otters plenty of time to scope the children out. It may not have been a conscious strategy, but it worked. I imagine Kotaro and Hana were overwhelmed with that beautiful baby smell, which is just yummy. All the wiggling about and smelling toes was so cute. I am primed and prepped for part two!!

Oh, I've seen some EPIC tantrums thrown in Japan. My husband had to evacuate Seiyu due to the particularly vicious, loud piercing shrieks and screams of one intensely angry young child. Why the mother didn't deal with it rather than let other shoppers suffer for 20 entire minutes, I have no idea. Kids in Japan when they kick off are just the same as anywhere else. It's young primary school aged children and up that are well behaved, not the toddlers. Terrible twos= universal human truth. ;D

Such cute and sociable animals . And they are not aggressive, most importantly, they are afraid of children , but they are still suitable. In Russia, some people have otters, but not an Asian species like yours, but a European one. :)

Dogs, cats, ferrets, rats, etc have all caused serious unprovoked injury to babies. Smaller animals it's mostly an issue with unsupervised interaction but bigger animals you better trust that individual implicitly before letting them interact with an infant. Even if 99.9% of situations are safe do you really want to risk being in that 0.1% for no good reason?

I would say they are very Japanese -esque names. The children’s names are considered pretty/vintage in Japanese too (traditionally classic“wafuu” names). Some traditional Japanese names are seasonal, so like since kohaku means amber, I’m assuming he was born in autumn, and maybe one of the girls in spring, since she has “ha” in her name, usually meaning leaf.
