Love otep. Btw this song is what got me into this relatively unknown band. The lyrics are nothing short of the absolute freaking truth of how greed and privilege are destroying the working class. Now we have the wealth gap between the working poor and the 1% getting wider by the year. A true metal masterpiece that should have gotten way more credit than it did.

stuck mojo are the natural progression of orig 'True' Metal warriors, Manowar, formed from tuners guitar techs, virtuoso musicians, friends of support. Black sabbath featuring Ronnie james dio, 80 - 82. Heaven & Hell was an unfinished Quartz song. written by the man who helped Iommi play left handed. Sabbath's unsung hero, who filled in for geezer, and no one noticed... R.i.p. Geoff Nicholls, or better still reform with taffy in heaven. Gibson SG still Rocks

+Hasset Anteneh first, it's "reek", not "reak". Second, you say that like socialism is a bad thing. Socialism isn't so bad. It works quite well with other systems of government. There are a number of moderately successful socialist democracies around. It's communism that's the evil form of government. Communism is a warped version of socialism yes, but socialism is so much more than communism. And it's not like the lyrics of the song are wrong about the state of the USA. We've taken capitalism much too far. I'm not saying capitalism should be abolished outright, but we need to dial it back a little bit. What we need to do is the best of capitalism and the best of socialism in one government.

As female metal singers go, shes one of my favorites. Most of them are down the 2 ally's of growl or operatic, which is overdone, unoriginal, boring, tired. This woman has done it her own way, & it sounds feminine, mean, & has signature. I dont agree with every statement, but shes an artist & credit where its due! 👍

I'm compiling a series of reviews I wrote long ago for magazines, e-zines, etc. and I came across this piece I wrote for this album when it came out. If memory serves me well enough, this was used for certain press release packets for this album. Anyway, the album is fucking amazing... Thru a rash of negativity and the braying of the wolf, I’ve come to reprise my view of Otep and their poetically brooding Metal. Some Thrash. Some neurotic. Some morbid. Some beautiful. And nearly every facet of music to be drowned asunder and made to review by sundown on the fifth day. “Smash The Control Machine!” Break away from the molds of schedules and deadlines. Berate humanity and its successes. On the brink of launching themselves into the abyss of a horrifically perfect Otep calculating album, I attest that Smash The Control Machine is a surreal salute to the poetic heavy monster that has been revolutionized again and again to become beyond a label. “Make Me Completely Numb And Dumb!” as I take down the Justerini & Brooks Scotch Whiskey. One more dose. Scattered throughout the album are Otep Shamaya’s lines of poetry, some with music behind and some with the constructed noises of a different dimension. Only two however, could be considered in full. Kisses & Kerosene takes us on some torturous black vision of slow mutilation and an obvious hatred towards some poor soul. “To Cover Your Body With Kisses And Kerosene. To Watch You Burn.” I Remember, not too far from a dust storm of noise and lines read in some erratic demeanor for nearly nine minutes. An ending to the album, but to what extent the power of Otep closes, I felt none. Where The River Ends... The beast… The masterpiece… The standout build-up to something more than all else combined, has a groove sense and rhythmic shamanic catharsis beat that will engrain itself and its story in your soul. A date gone horribly wrong. The finding of a Minotaur and its deserving murder. “You Are To Lick Honey From A Thorn If You Are To Survive This Night.” Liberation and revival demanding respect on all fronts. Poetic. Beautiful. Strong, and with horns of Metal to show us all Where The River Ends. It fades to black, but if done correctly, we can look back and learn a lesson from this song, the predecessor to the album’s final track. Sweet Tooth and Smash The Control Machine, two excellently written, heavy vehicles of what’s to be known as the signature Otep sound, if such a thing exists at all. An obsessed fascination and rightfully respectful musical tribe blasting through explosive stories and hellish grooves. Hooks to rock hard and tales to ponder on long afterwards. “Take My Temperature Baby. This Is What You Taste Like.” The antics of born again Americans and the bullshit of becoming such a thing. Funk taken to such a heavy level. Verses and chorus lines beyond rap and into a mode all their own. Classic Otep and a sign of what the masses have yet to even yield a glance at. “Work. Buy. Consume. Die… The Revolution Will Be Monetized, And Streamed Live Via Renegade WiFi!” The genius of Otep can be heard in three separate pieces on Smash The Control Machine. The first, and salutation of it all is Rise, Rebel, Resist. “Let’s Commit A Hate Crime!” The vocal duality with Otep Shamaya’s high notes and ferocious calloused growls ride from beginning to end, screaming at us all to make a fist and RESIST! The heaviest track on the album with a scratchy lead that drags a bit behind our headcharge on the verses and disappears on the chorus, and all of it leading to an insanely brutal Sepultura-like freakish mighty groove to the very end. The second tone of genius can be heard on the beautiful and nearly entirely piano-driven Ur A Wmn Now. The tale of an arranged wedding between two strangers… And a bit more, the as of yet unknown groom to correct his bride for life while she surrenders her free will. “Good Girls Hold Real Still. Surrender Your Free Will.” This song is light and the music sweet. The lyrics represent an anger and horrible reality of life on the “jagged edge of the world.” With no breakdown and no true musical heaviness to speak of, the tale told in Ur A Wmn Now is just enough to either raise goosebumps, bring on a single trickling tear, or if the moment is just right and the booze is in one’s veins, smash something deserving. The third example of why I find this album amazing is Where The River Ends, already praised. The outlining jams to not be discarded by any means simply hold the album together. Head… Poetic groovy verses about what ails the world and the bastard swine that have lit it all on fire, followed by a slow heavy chorus. Thick bass lines and badass lyrics… All building at the end to a faster and faster and faster message of finding one’s own way… And the chorus screaming my favorite lines on the whole album. “Are They The Shepherds Or Are They Sheep?! Are We The Butchers Or Are We Meat?!” Run For Cover… The smoothest and grooviest track on the album beyond measure. Serv Asat, and Unveiled are rides through Otep Shamaya’s lyrical mastery… Possibly a heavy dosage of Rap, or just her own brand of slaughter. Heavy and smooth as they are, when the moment comes, Otep hold nothing back in coming completely together as a unit and brandishing what is truly and remarkably only their style. Serv Asat, however, stands strong and proudly alongside Rise, Rebel, Resist in terms of absolute severity and brutality. Heavy as all Hell and with not a decibel of groove lost. Numb And Dumb has an extra dose of “Get The Fuck Outta’ My Face!” (GTFOMF!) in its simple verse lines about the narcotic existence the masses seem to live in thru whatever garbage subscribed to dose after dose, and the sickness of a sex-addicted teacher and a preacher with a porn habit, and as Otep would never cease to pile on the literary velocity, there is much more. One of the strongest finishes on the album as well with the most badass and ferocious of screams that Otep Shamaya has proven to posses time and time again. Oh, So Surreal tells a few short sentiments about the unbelievable aspects of a few lives that would otherwise be surreal, had they not been entirely true and relatively hard to imagine while sitting in front of a laptop with Scotch Whiskey in hand. But such is life. Smash The Control Machine is not Otep’s heaviest, but I believe it to be their finest and most remarkable work yet. True emotion charging head first into the unknown. They are a band in their own realm and have no equal in what they do. The lyrics and vocal styling never cease to amaze and on this album, they have surpassed anything prior. The musicianship bounds together consistently and progresses with every record. If you dig on Otep, then I suggest The Agonist, Pantera, Machine Head, Kittie, Rage Against The Machine, and The End by The Doors.
