I need an OTDR that can measure loss on a fiber with just 1 connector spliced on. The slide at 8:13 says the OTDR sends a signal into one end and analyzes the backscatter and reflected signal. Does this happen or work with nothing on the end of the fiber? I would be plugging an SC terminated side into the OTDR and the other end is just cut, un-connectorized fiber.

Thank you for this video. Can I have one question? What if the overall link loss is less than the expected result? Is there a problem with the fiber or the test conducted?

Hi @Joel Eliber Cordero - When the overall link loss is less than expected, it usually means there is a major issue with the fiber, such as a break or extremely lossy event. The OTDR will only measure the link loss to that event, and not the entire fiber, which is why the link loss is less than expected. Thanks for watching!

Thank you i have one question, why OTDR misses some events

  • @ViaviSolutions

In most cases, an OTDR misses an event because there is not enough loss and/or reflectance for the OTDR software to determine there is an event. The most common case is a fusion splice that has minimal loss; normally the OTDR needs at least .05dB of loss in order to assign an event to it, but current fusion splicers are capable of fusion splices much less than that, so the OTDR will not automatically assign an event to that splice.

Was reading Wikipedia of the history of this company and realized most of the equipment I have used working in wireless became Viavi. Acterna, TTC, JDSU and Wavetek. Made me realize I am getting old! 😅
