OT Rex - Avulsion Injuries - Mallet Finger, Boutonniere, Swan Neck Deformity

Hey everyone! Boy oh boy did this video take a while to edit. I hope this is helpful to you all. I tried my best to condense it but keep in memorable as well.
For those of you studying right now, remember to take care of yourself and know this is just the beginning of an amazing future. Hang in there!
At 3:08, I showed you guys the palmar side of my finger. I should have shown you guys the opposite side (dorsal/back) of my finger where the central slip runs for the boutonniere deformity. The picture at 2:47 accurately shows the central slip tear. Sorry for the confusion this may have caused. Sources:

@3:00 you show the palmar side and DIP joint of your finger as the central slip “button cut” that would cause boutonnière deformity but the central slip attaches on the anterior proximal aspect of the intermediate phalange

Hi David! Thanks for your comment. You are absolutely right! Thank you for catching this. I should have shown you guys the opposite side (dorsal/back) of my hand where the central slip runs for that example. I make note of this error as a top comment/in the description.

Thank you so much for this video! I just have a quick question. For the swan neck deformity why would you use a PIP extension splint if the PIP joint is already hyperextended? Just a little confused on that. Thanks again for the video :)

Great question! From my understanding, oval 8 splints (or similar splints) are used on the PIP joint to stabilize and prevent PIP hypertension while allowing for flexion. By stabilizing the PIP joint, the DIP joint becomes easier to control/move. With that being said, every swan neck case is different so depending on the severity, treatment recommendations may vary as well but PIP extension is the most common one for a Swan neck deformity. Hope this is helpful!

@@OTRex Hi, thanks for the great video! According to AOTA, in swan neck deformity the PIP is splinted in slight flexion.

My story is I was running down the basketball court. I tripped and fell on my hands. I bruised my middle finger. Real bad. It was swollen and turned red.

I have mallet finger wore the splint did hand therapy and when they said I was good to not wear it anymore but it's still bent at the tip of my finger and from there down it's still swollen is it fixable or do I just have to deal with it?? I also had surgery and pins were put in as well I'm just worried I don't want it to look abnormal for the rest of my life.
