I went from what my family was called Middle Middle Class from when my parents got married in 1954, to my brother in 1956 and me in 1959, to Poor! It was then I heard for Poor being called low income, the needy, the underserved, the Under Class, the penniless, the destitute. Both parties are too concerned with making Middle Class lives better and they’re hardly suffering. They have no clue what it’s like to lose things! They don’t know what it’s like to be on the brink of homelessness, they’ve never gone a day hungry. Republicans and Democrats if they bother to even acknowledge us, we’re not called Poor but all those other insulting names as if saying the word Poor, teeth would start falling out and do their best to make life easier for Middle Class. We Poor aren’t acknowledged as people so we’re renamed every few months so politicians feel better. I didn’t notice it until I fell. The need for class stratification? In other words a stupid cast system? My family was called Middle Middle Class in the mode to late 50’s, 60’s, 70’s all the up to the end of the 80’s and mid 90’s when my parents passed, Middle Class bumping up a notch to just Middle Class that politicians are so eager to make life better for totally ignoring Poor to giving us the very least and having to jump through hoops to get and keep help. Class stratification is NOT a need! I don’t know if they still have it, but India had a caste system. Know what they called the Poor? The Untouchables! They were literally ignored! Maybe they changed it. This country refuses to, and class stratification as you call it, is just another way to be treated different. A different caste. Rich think they’re better than others, Middle Class think they’re as entitled as Rich, Poor get the scraps, blamed, hoop jumping to get help and keep it, villainized or totally ignored. I’m Poor! NOT low income, the underserved which is easy for politicians to call us because they don’t think our existence matters as much, the Under Class, the low wealth, the needy, the destitute and who knows what new names will be chosen, treating Poor like we’re nothing more than bacteria to reclassify so others feel a little more comfortable referring to us. Very important message here. Except for those women totally under the thumbs of whatever male influences exist in their lives, I cannot understand how any woman in this country could vote republican. Because they’ve been told if they are perfect little paragons of womanhood then they will be safe and God and white men will protect them like a lady in a tower. They don’t realize the tower is a prison until it is personal and by then it’s too late.

I am a 71 year old woman. I had been so proud of how far we, as a country, had come. (Wasn't so proud of what it took to get there.) And now we are going back to before I was born in how we treat people. It is ridiculous and CRAZY.

If that family includes children, it's near impossible to survive on one income. My family lives on one income, that being my husband's. (I'm disabled but plan on with working from home if we decide to have children.) We do fine, but we live in a cheaper place and as I stated have no children. I agree with you, this entire idea of fertility awareness is hogwash at best.

Because it's not about children's lives. I came of age in the 60's protesting the war,marching on the streets of San Francisco and I won't quit now. Worked as health nurse in the 80's on a college campus counseling young women considering an abortion and I won't quit now. It is MOST white women, and who better to help white women throw up the boot than other white women? How is it that these groups always want to cancel "Head Start" ? Ronald Reagan succeeded in canceling it in the early 1980's - only for him to give it back in exchange for "Social Security" reform ("reform" that increased deductions but we are also still "paying back" in loans to the general budget).

But from there the Republican Party seems to have gone off a cliff and now into the sewer. The Democratic Party got sidetracked into a milder form of neoliberalism after Reagan did serious damage to unions that had funded Democrats. But to my surprise, Biden seems to be moving away from those policies, which is what we need. The FTC going after monopolies is new. Medicare negotiating drug prices for the first time is not business as usual. And unions are growing with his support. I wish the media would quit chasing clicks with horse race polls and report on the substance of policy differences of the two parties. As a lifelong independent, I never expected to be saying vote blue, but with the authoritarianism that has developed on the red side…blue it is! All the way down the ballot!

Goes back to eugenics. The children who benefit the most from such programs are from marginalized communities - racial minorities and poor whites. In other words, undesirables. These people don't want to help black and brown babies or white "trailer park" babies. Also de-funding head start and similar programs ensures a constant supply of future lower class workers to exploit in the economic sector. The proof: many of these same states are passing laws to allow children as young as 14 to drop out of school so they can work full-time.

As a single mom with Medicaid, I have to work to get Medicaid for myself and my daughter.
