Osteopenia is a condition in which bone mineral density is lower than normal. It is important to keep this level from dropping further, so that you don’t end up with osteoporosis. Osteoporosis occurs when your bone density becomes very low.
Exercise can be helpful in keeping your bones strong and preventing osteopenia from advancing. Exercise is essential to treat or even reverse the negative effects of osteopenia or osteoporosis. What kind of exercise is best? What kind of exercise should you avoid? Read on to learn the best osteopenia and osteoporosis exercises for strong bones.
Do these exercises if you have Osteopenia or Osteoporosis
For people who have already been diagnosed with osteoporosis or osteopenia, there are two types of exercise that are important for building and maintaining bone density: Weight-bearing exercises and muscle-strengthening exercises.
Weight bearing exercises. Weight-bearing exercises for osteoporosis and osteopenia include walking, swimming, using elliptical machines or stair machines, and low-impact aerobics.
Muscle strengthening exercises. Muscle-strengthening exercises for osteoporosis and osteopenia include lifting light weights and balance or flexibility exercises. You want to pay special attention to strengthen the abdominal muscles to stabilize the back because osteoporosis commonly results in compression fractures in the spinal column; just make sure that the back is always properly supported while performing abdominal exercises.
Exercise is not going to magically improve osteopenia overnight. An article in the “American Family Physician” points out that it will take more than a year to see any results of exercise on osteopenia. Keep in mind that the longer you keep up an exercise program, the better the effect will be on your bone strength. It may take years before you see a positive change in your bone density, and sometimes exercise alone is not enough. Your doctor may also recommend other lifestyle habits to support you.
If your goal is to strengthen your bones and head off the debilitating effects of osteopenia or osteoporosis, exercise is truly an essential ingredient. While exercise is good for promoting bone strength when you have osteopenia, be careful not to overdo it. Too much exercise is not a good thing for anyone. To safely get started, work with a coach who can help you customize a fitness program tailored to your body's unique needs. They can help you make sure that both weight-bearing exercises and muscle-strengthening exercises are part of your routine . Most importantly they will help you perform the exercises safely with good form and make sure that the exercise routine you do is something your body can handle.

Glad I found this. I was just diagnosed with osteoporosis of the spine, and was looking for some good exercises to strengthen my back. This has become a part of my daily workout routine.
Thanks for this great routine! I'm only 50 and was recently diagnosed with low bone density in the femur and spine. I will be adding this video to my weekly routine. Would greatly appreciate more osteopenia-friendly videos. Again, a big thanks!
I'm so glad I found you. When I got my diagnosed at 50 with Osteopenia it was devastating. I was told it was from my full hysterectomy 11 yrs ago. The doctor never did a follow up because he retired...so my regular dr thought the OBGYN dr gave me information on how to take care of myself after Hysterectomy. So I wasn't taking the necessary precautions to prevent Osteopenia. So yes my Primary Dr and I were very upset...thank you for this video. Many blessings
Thanks a million. I only followed your video twice and I feel my hips and groins are much relaxed. I've tried a lot of other exercises with no good results. I'm glad I found you.
Great exercises Caroline. I did this several times and will do more. You have a perfect personality for this and motivator.

Thank you Caroline, I will stay ON
Thanks Caroline for another great video.
I'm glad I found your exercise for osteoporosis. It really helped me. Thank You!
Thank you so much. I had a hip fracture and bone density is 2.6. I really needed this. I'm going to try to do them everyday.
Great choices!Great delivery!Thank you for this great video!!🥲
Thank you! The only suggestion I would say is your black pants blend in with the black mat so it’s hard to see your motions and that black pillow restricts ability to see where your legs are. But I can’t wait to do this thank you
This was great for me, glad to find you.
Thank you very much.Very good exercises.Im following them.

Good video
Nice delivery and lots of great exercises. I would suggest not going into full bridge as it causes loaded flexion in the upper back and you want to avoid this if you have osteoporosis as there would be a risk of fracture. I would just do pelvic tilt and let the hips hover and not go higher for this reason. Just sharing what I have been advised :) Thanks for doing the video. x

It's very much helpful for me for I'm suffering from osteoporosis for 2-3 years. Mam, if I am using a kneecap then can I wear it at the time of exercise also ?
I really like these exercises. Which of them are most focused on benefiting people who have osteoporosis of the spine (versus hips)?
Nice thank u

I was recently diagnosed with osteopenia and am glad I found this. Unfortunately I can't apply pressure on my knees or kneel or get off the floor on my own because of that (and being too heavy). I'd appreciate some more exercises that don't require kneeling. Thanks! By the way, it's great to hear you using phrases from Alexander Technique.

Can you post some do's and don'ts exercises for hip osteoarthritis...I'm also a long time yogini so if you'd post "do and don't do"yoga poses too? I also have osteopenia in the hips(my spine is normal). Thanks for any guidance! Your videos are great!
Thanks for educating the community and appreciate your volunteering Thanks to your team Question If you don't mind Are you certified? What kind of education needed to become like you? Appreciate your reply
I think you're very knowledgeable and you have quite a pleasant voice. However, I've just been diagnosed with osteopenia,And I have worn patellas in my knees. I could never do the exercises on the floor that you have shown.I have found several videos where you can do chair exercises including those with bands or light weight.I also am able to walk Which is probably the only exercise I actually like.I noticed that's video was done in 2019 so we're now in 2021 I have subscribed to you because I think you're very knowledgeable but I was wondering if you could Address exercise for those who may Need to do off the floor exercises. Also what recommendation do you have for how long 1 should walk in order to try and offset this condition from becoming osteoporosis.
I do your exercises daily. I need a stronger upper body spine though. Also i have a bone spur on the top of my right foot and arthritis in my left ankle. I need a good shoe that isn't a sandal. Can up recommend anything? Trish
How often should we do this routine for Osteopenia? Daily or something else?
Can you also add light weights eg in the last chair squat exercises?
I was just diagnosed with osteoporosis/osteopenia of the femur and spine so I am happy to have found your videos. How often would you recommend I perform these exercises? Thank you.
Can u do these exercise after u hv had hip replacement op?
Where is any support that these no weight bearing exercise has any benefit on increasing bone mass and density?
Me too
Dear Caroline Can i put pressure on my hand? coz i have osteoporosis in my hand And my age is 42 years old Thank u in advance🙏🌹

Omg thank you ♡ A little criticism though: the dark pillow and mat makes it hard to see what you're doing when you're wearing dark pants. Perhaps invest in some neon leggings?
