Osteoid Osteoma vs Osteoblastoma

Osteoid osteoma and osteoblastoma are both benign tumors of osteoblasts, which are the osteoid-producing, bone-forming cells in the body. Since these tumors both contain osteoid, they each present on x-ray as a bony mass with a radiolucent core.
Osteoid osteoma is smaller than osteoblastoma, and you can think of it as osteoblastoma’s little brother. But this little brother lives in the long bones, because that’s where osteoid osteoma often occurs. It typically has pain that is worse at night; and that pain also improves with NSAID use.
Osteoblastoma on the other hand, is the larger of the two tumor types, and they typically occur in the vertebrae. The pain is not worse at night when compared to day, nor is the pain usually responsive to NSAIDs. Since the pain does not improve with medication, osteoblastomas are treated surgically in order to alleviate the pain.

john C thanks for responding and good to hear you are feeling better. I have in my T6 thoracic spine as well. Did they just removed the tumour ? I had my 1 st surgery in 2015 and they removed the tumour by scraping my thoracic spine but it started growing back after 4 years. Now they are going to cut some piece of bone and put a rod and screw it to support the spine. Its going to be a big surgery now.

Visual learning memory aids have blundered by not showing the words of the associated diseases we are to visually recognize. After all, we wont be hearing the diseases but reading them. "Which disease was in the foreground again?"

Hi Micah, we appreciate the feedback. Our other videos usually split each disease into its own scene to prevent any confusion you've described. This being said, comparing/contrasting these two osteoblast tumors was deemed to be more important for this video. Most people easily recall one or two facts about a disease, but remembering every fact in context is hard. For instance, most students know that osteoid osteoma is the smaller lesion, or that osteoblastoma affects the vertebrae. Keeping all the other facts straight is what's difficult - and that's exactly what this scene aims to make easier. Our team fully believes in the benefit of visual aids, supported by decades of cognitive science research. This being said, we're happy to address any questions or concerns.
