OSS "Bigot" 1911 dart-firing pistol
The "Bigot" was a modification of an M1911 .45 caliber pistol developed by the Office of Strategic Services during WW2. The OSS was a clandestine operations service, the predecessor of the CIA. The Bigot was intended as a way for commandos to quietly eliminate sentries - although we are not sure what advantage it might have had over a silenced pistol. Questionable utility doesn't prevent it from being a pretty interesting piece of equipment, though, and we had the opportunity to take a look at one up close recently.

Between the cats meowing, the goofy cork popping noise the dart made at 1:02, and Ian's WTF face afterwards, this has to be the most unintentionally funny Forgotten Weapons episode ever.

It's possible. The sharpened dart that is flared at the rear would probably perform well underwater and that may have been it's original purpose. The standard finned dart was more common, it was developed under the assumption that a heavy steel dart would inflict a greater wound and be quieter than a conventionally suppressed pistol. I've never heard any stories about the Bigot being used in WW2 (although it probably was), but it was alleged to have been used in Vietnam by tunnel rats.

What a cool device! Thanks for making the video. I was thinking about the name; could 'Bigot' be a play on the word 'spigot'? This type of device (a rod for a grenade to mount on) was definitely called a spigot in the UK at least. Our first RPG was a spigot type.

BEST LAWN DART EVER! This was never intended as a weapon system. There is no practical application for it. But as a lawn dart setup the potential for carnage is unsurpassed. Truly the best British “hold my beer” product ever made.
*somewhere in an underground bunker in 1942, the president meets with the OSS over a "new stealth weapon"* Behold Mr.President! We the OSS,predecessors of the CIA, have devised a multitude of tactical tools for our commandos in the field to make their simple tasks, ultimately very silly and not very operationally efficient or effective but will still sound good when written into a spy novel.First off is a conversion kit for our 1911 to shoot a semi-silent massive dart instead of its already potent .45 cartridge. Sounds tricky and kinda hollywood level unnecessary, Will it win us the war? Its possible the fascists will die of laughter before our operatives can even fire it, sir. PERFECT!..Build 20 of them and save one for the historical society. Future generations will want to see just how we developed our own sense of effectiveness while still managing to be ineffective! Now if you'll come over here..we have an incendiary bat bomb to show you...Which we believe will terrify tojo so much the war will be over in 10 days!...and because this is 1942 we won't incidentally piss off any PETA people. GREAT! Sounds terrific! ----------------------------------------------------------------- ...and it was on that day, the bigot dart attachment went into production and a precedent was set for future generations on how to fight wars by the CIA's bad ideas. The end.

I found these so interesting that I tried to find if someone fired a replica online. To my surprise I haven't found much information about the device. Great videos, love watching them, and hope to see more!
It pleases me greatly that this video has shown up in my feed. The cat gun must not be forgotten.
The name could be from bullet and spigot. Spigot mortars were common in WWI and this is identical, mechanically, to those mortars. And to the PIAT anti-tank projector.
Be interesting to know how “silent” & accurate it was and it’s range
I have found an bold exactly like that as a kid in a WW2 bunker in costal town called Zandvoort. Those bunkers where part of the German Atlantic Wall, although The Kingdom of the Netherlands border's the North Sea and the Scandinavian Sea via the Wadden Sea in the North. It was a German WW2 made and manned bunker, it was accompanied by a German helmet and a chair and table with remnants of WW2 German documents (to far gone to handle or really readable), and two Nazi wall graffiti's . The bolt was very rusty and seem to have nicked the German helmet on the right lower side, gave it to my friend all those years ago in trade for a knife, but always wondered what that weird looking short bolt did there in the far corner of the bunker past the chair and table, thought it came out of a small sized crossbow back then . Thanks for showing this !
I don't know if my information is correct but what I have read is, that device was made for shooting guidelines up into trees or similar orientations to pull up climbing ropes/wires. How that works I don't know. But I have read that the bigot was mainly used by snipers trying to have a easy access up into trees. And help the supply tropes put up lifting-blocks high up in what ever they used for stationary cranes.
You forgot to feed the cat
1:01 is where I paused the vid to go find out what's going on with my cats. Sigh...
When you made this video a full decade ago, did you ever dream your channel would get to the size it is now & you would become an icon in gun culture? Denzel, the guy you used to interview in South Africa works at the shop here in the US now & is a buddy of mine. He had nothing but good things to say about you.
From what I've heard, this was meant to be use on U-boats, where using a silencer would still have enough velocity to have repercussions when fired. Also, I think it was a .32 cap, not a .25.
Back here watching this again since Phantom Forces added this.
I like the cat. He;s a talker.

Lawn darts kill
One word - OUCH! Love the cat in the background audio, love the channel, you just don't get to see these things in the UK.
I recall another of your videos where there was a cat in the background making a lot of noise. During filming you mentioned the cat as I remember. The whole dart thing was cool, but Dude the cat rocked.
Can it kill dragons?
In Silent Storm they had these as a hidden weapon. They actually thought they fired exploding rockets lol.
The reason you would use the Bigot rather than a silencer is that with the Bigot, you do not have the sound of the 1911 action cycling. The 25-caliber charge is small and the tube of the dart is long so there will be very little noise from that cartridge firing.
The kitty keeps correcting Ian's mistakes. Ian: "This contains basically a .25 caliber blank." Kitty: 'no.'
I'm no expert but....I imagine the designers at OSS had visions of commandos sneaking up to a factory and taking out the tower and fence guards. Then dumping the piston and loading a .45 sneaking in, planting explosives. Then a factory exploding in the background, panzer turrets popping off for no reason, and germans yelling achtung!, while the commandos walk away. Then the allied commanders said......meh we'll just bomb the factory....
