    Great review. Instead of selling me on a new bag you reminded me of how much I love a bag I already own.. The Osprey Porter 46. When I first purchased it I was absolutely love with it. I called it the "straight jacket" and I never over packed it, cinching it tight, it was ballistic and my laptop had never been more well-protected! But I am a 5-foot 4-inch female and at over 3 lb this bag was just too much. There were so many design pluses is however I'm thinking on my next trip I may drag it out again.. Great review, cheers!

    I love that straight jacket feature, but I think they could keep a lot of the same funtionality and slim the back weight down a bit. What bag do you use now as a replacement for the Porter? Was it the Timbuk2?

  • @IntriguedLioness

    @@OneBagTravels yes, the Timbuk2 Wingman for simplicity .. handles on all sides, slides in overheads but also comfortable as a backpack if you don't pack gear... for multi season my Patagonia blackhole 55 ( but definitely oversized once again) ... I ordered two 18litre* daypacks yesterday and had to smile that over the past decade I definitely have realized that smaller is often better!! Both great bags, but I prefer the Farpoint for the comfort factor and overall aesthetic (yes, I'm a bit shallow that way). I do wish they would move the laptop sleeve to the back of the Farpoint, though. I hate having it in front. I also do like the extra room in the Porter, but 40L is more than enough space when done properly.

    AMAZING REVIEW. If only the Porter had the hip belt/straps found on the Farpoint, itd be a no brainer to get the Porter. The Farpoint 40 was updated and fixed the Water bottle mesh pockets AND the laptop sleeve is accessed from the side and slits into the back side. I still find the Porter 46 laptop sleeve more ideal even compared to the updated Farpoint. The Farpoint 40 is easier to pack and unpack and I find them more comfortable for longer treks because of its improved hip belt and strapping.

    Thanks, I own a Porter 46 and it's honestly not my favorite osprey pack I own. was considering switching but I think that I would like the Farpoint even less. if you combined the Farpoint straps with the porter body I think I would like this bag a lot more, it's a hassle to have to assemble the straps every time you want to use it in "backpack mode" whereas the Farpoint you can just unzip quickly. I pretty much use it as a duffel. I Love the porter interior though! wish It had a waterbottle pocket but what I do is use a carabiner and secure the bottle under the Porter's "shell".

    Kathmandu quite recently released a new 2020 version of the Litehaul 38L backpack, but unfortunately it is still only available for purchase in Australia and New Zealand websites. Someone in reddit had asked Kathmandu when it will be released in other markets as well and apparently they said there are no plans for that at the moment. I am also very interested in the bag and the new version has some improvements over the older one, like better fabric, a quick access pocket with more structure and a nicer water bottle pocket.

    Does anyone think this would be a good backpack to carry an alienware x17 on an airline plus other items. I was thinking I could fit it with lots of other items to travel but then there's probably a weight limit on carry-on backpacks. So then I may as well get something slim. Any suggestions or thoughts? Or even recommendations toward other backpacks to travel with the alienware x17???? (I think it's larger than any other 17 in)

  • @OneBagTravels

    @OneBagTravels

    2 жыл бұрын

    You would probably have to put it in the main compartment in a padded sleeve. There are several brands that take a 17" laptop but I don't know if they will hold one larger, like eBags Motherlode, Evergoods, Cabin Zero, GoRuck, Tortuga. It would be best if they listed the dimensions of the laptop compartment rather than just the size, then you could just measure it.

    Osprey are good packs, but I'm not sure what brands are available to you in Italy. Cabin Zero is British, they make great inexpensive packs that you may be able to get down there. Maybe also Jack Wolfskin (German), Fjallraven (Sweden). Some other good ones are Aer, Able Carry, Cotopaxi, Evergoods, Minaal, Nomatic, Peak Design, Tortuga. Think they are all American companies and not sure which ones ship internationally.

    Porter is larger, but the style of these bags is very similar, and because they're soft-sided you can under or overpack them and fit more (or less) gear than the listed capacity.

    I haven't used the Dayite packs with the Porter. There are 4 fabric loops on the outside the Porter where you attach the Dayite to. It looks fairly easy to attach, but it blocks access to the front slash pocket and main compartment. I've tried other packs where you attach a daypack to the outside and I don't like it. It seems like a good idea in theory, but if you have stuff in the daypack your bag ends up being huge and uncomfortabe. I would only use the Daylite attachment if it was empty.

    The two travel bags are designed (generally speaking) for different purposes. The Portal is a suitcase designed to accommodate a backpack type of transport, while the Farpoint is a backpack designed to accommodate items you'd bring on a trip. @Lagunakid24 I use the Farpoint more because it is a better option when I wear it as a backpack. The straps are more robust and holds large loads more comfortably. I have another Osprey travel bag that I am also using quite a bit; the Osprey Snowkit. Unfortunately, I think this bag has been discontinued, but it is a 46 liter that I use for general travel and works really well when I need more room than the Farpoint.

I don't want to carry alot, but if I'm going to hike I don't want to wear my big LaSportiva boots all the time and packing them is a PIA. Thanks. And I don't understand why Osprey just didn't take the best of both these packs and make one great pack. They are both for travel and not off road backpacking trips. Come on...

    I wear one all-purpose shoe and pack sandals in my bag. I switched to trail runners for almost every kind of hiking and backpacking. They work good for me if I'm not carrying too much weight. That's kind of the only solutions for packing shoes, bring a smaller shoe, or wear your boots everywhere. And yes, they should combine the best of both these packs 😆😆

  • @OneBagTravels

    It should be fine for carry-on for the international flight, just don't overpack and check your dimensions before you leave. Local budget airlines in Europe (ie Ryanair) usually have smaller dimensions so check those before you fly if you have any. I'm curious about the update on this bag, the version I have is 22” x 14” x 11 (56 x 36 x 28 cm). You can easily pack it too full and go over the depth dimension, but if you under pack it a little the bag squishes down great and it's fine. The newer update lists the dimensions on the website as 21.5H X 14W X 9D IN (55H X 36W X 23D CM) slightly smaller in length and depth than the version I have.

    Not the 40L Farpoint. Only bags that have those little fabric loops on the back will attach to the Daylite, like the Porter 30 and 40. However the Farpoint 55 has it's own detachable daypack bulit into the bag. It's a very similar setup to Farpoint+Daylite, which ends up being around 53 liters. But you don't need to buy the packs separately. The Osprey website doesn't have pictures of it, but they do at REI.

    Are they really carry on size? They both seem so big. Comparing the dimensions on the Osprey website with an airline like Ryan Air, I am convinced some dimensions are a good 10cm over! Yet the website and all forums insist it is carry on size! How can this be?

  • @OneBagTravels

    @OneBagTravels

    Жыл бұрын

    I think the idea of a "personal item" and a "carry-on" is a little misleading, because the size of bag allowed will be dependent on the airline you are flying, and sometimes even the plane. For example AeroMexico just says a personal item must "fit under the seat" but in my experience, the space you are allowed under the seat will vary depending on the type of plane, and even which seat you are in (aisle vs window). So really when someone says it works as a "carry-on," that means it worked as a carry-on for their flight. But it won't necessarily work as a carry-on for every airline. RyanAir has several bag options that have different price points depending on where you're flying. Their basic included bag is considered a "personal item" and is limited to 40 x 20 x 25 cm. The Farpoint is 55 x 35 x 23 cm, so way too big for that. To take the Farpoint on a RyaiAir flight, you would need to pay extra for their 10kg wheelie-bag option which is 55 x 40 x 20 cm. This Farpoint is still slightly over the depth dimension for this one, but I think if you underpack the bag a little ( or take bulky gear like a jacket out and wear it on the flight) then you would be ok.

    Having just took a trip to europe with the kids we had a farpoint 40, 2 fairview 40s and a porter 46. No contest here, the porter 46 is clearly inferior. It may be better if you just want a bag that also happens to have shoulder straps and a hip belt along with.
