OSMO ACTION 4 CHALLENGING 1ST EXPERIENCE

I was really excited to test my new DJI camera. BUT is great sound and images REALLY that simple?
Motovlogging has significant challenges, a key one being recording useable sound. DJI now has some of the best audio and video recording solutions. However, whilst most tests and reviews make it look like a simple matter of "plugging and playing" is it really that easy????
Microphone choice, placement, and camera set-up are critical and unique to every camera. I'm really impressed with my DJI, but it hasn't been clear sailing. On top of the sound challenges, I struggled to register my camera (Which you MUST do if you even want to record videos using the DJI Action 4), it took 2 hours, (with assistance from the 'helpline') and I can't connect it to my phone, which means I can not update the firmware.
Check out this video, to see what you can expect, even when you have years of experience with Action Cameras.

By the time you are reading this, my second video will be out. On that video I do discuss the settings and how I've set up my helmet and mic. However, I don't show the helmet set-up as I had video, but then changed the set-up again. Also, it would be hard to see anyway because I have 3 mics in my helmet. - The Akaso USB mic, which is on the side of the chin-piece, inside the helmet, with the capsule facing the cheek pad. - A "Drift" mic in the chin piece, with dead cat, which I'm using with my DJI. - And a Comica Sig Lav V05 mic for my SonyX3000, with adjustable gain. That mic is stuffed back into the cheek pad to get it out of the way of my mouth, and the wind - (Although I haven't tested it yet. As far as extra difficulties go (on top of all the usual MotoVlogging challenges) I'm also fighting a noisy helmet. I have a heavily worn Rjays Adventure helmet that is very rattly. If any of you are considering this setup, I still think it is one of the best options. You'll definitely be able to reduce gain adequately on any mic using the DJI and 3.5mm mic adapter. In the follow-up test, you'll see that. I ran the gain at -6dB. The 3.5mm adapter drops gain by -6dB. And you can drop the gain further if you need to. You can reduce the gain as low as -20dB. The next run I do will be at -4dB. I think -6dB is overkill. I'll also play with wind noise ON and OFF. In the follow-up video, I only adjusted the levels during editing (Up - by between 9-12dB). I did not add any EQ, or noise reduction during editing, so you are just hearing the set-up, as it is. Let me know if you want me to do a comparison of all my set-ups, And my general thoughts. Thanks Josh. Your support is hugely appreciated. Hopefully, I've dialed the sound and picture in a bit better now - so future videos should look and sound better. I think I had sharpness up and noise reduction up and was running the amp too hot in the camera. I'm glad you thought the sound was ok. I did do a ton of post-work to try and get rid of a lot of issues. I'm hoping with better set-up, I won't have to. Was hoping to finally shoot a test review for my Africa Twin today and shoot a CFMOTO 450MT review tomorrow - However, the weather has turned pretty terrible. Maybe this afternoon it'll get better. Hope you are well. Things have been hectic here and work has been a nightmare of dramas. Enjoying your vids immensely. Was pretty bummed to see JDs accident. Hope he is ok. CHUR, CAM FROM NZ :)

I just picked up the adventure combo. New rider, still getting things settled. went with the chinmounts mount for my shoei. probably putting that on here in a few mins because the helmet has to sit for a day after you stick it on.

Yep, I got the adventure combo. I have a new vid coming out in a couple of days, with a slightly different set-up and different settings. I think it is way better and just need to make minor tweaks now. Let me know if you want any advice regarding cameras, or bikes :)

I’m new to motovlogging and have the Osmo Action 4 with the DJI Mic 2. I have the transmitter fixed to the inside of my chin bar, and the mic gain at -12dB. Not sure if you’ve found it yet, but the mic gain setting is actually in the exposure settings in Pro (bit of a weird place for it). I do get wind noise, but I think it’s acceptable and to be honest, I couldn’t hear much wrong with yours either 😊. Beautiful area you are riding in!

Yep discovered that. It only shows up when you have a mic attached. The other day I shot one whole clip that ended up having no sound, AND the video just stopped recording. I hope I'm not going to get GoPro type problems. I didn't go for the mic 2 as I didn't want another thing to charge that might not connect easily. Anyway, my new vid is out and I'm pretty happy with the results.😄👍

Yep reliability is way better. The Insta360 ACE PRO could also be worth looking at. It is more expensive, but has similar good audio adapter and can produce crazy good images.👍😀

Hi 👋 buddy! Went through your video and read about the improvements due in next one: can you also present the entire setup on the helmet? I’m using now Gopro with Rode wireless and the Rode Lavalier Go but it’s so sensitive, I have a hard time tuning it down with a dead cat chucked between the helmet and my chin; post voice isolation in Final Cut also helps but always looking for better alternatives; what I would love is a mic that has the sensitivity of my Cardo’s microphone 💯

@@actstuntcam so 1 camera on your helmet, 1 on the selfie stick and the other one where? Do you run long cables for audio from the 2 cameras that are not on your helmet? And you will be using the audio from DJI going forward, right?🙏

@@9to5sucks55 DJI on my helmet chin mount. Then I used the same DJI (Not another one) on the selfie stick. I also have the Sony X3000. I did have a side-by-side in my original edit, but unfortunately, accidentally deleted the files before the edit was finished (The challenges of a laptop with less than a Terabyte of memory). I'm pretty sure I'll be using the sound from the DJI (Did you see the video that came out last night? - what did you think of the sound). In the review, I shot at -4dB, so it'll be interesting to watch it on my TV (Streamed from KZread), which I haven't yet. Also, I'm going to try that new mic with the Sony (Really just out of curiosity). So YES, going forward, I'll be using the DJI audio. Feel free to ask any other questions :) Also, leave a comment on the new vid. I'd be really grateful for some feedback and I'm really curious to know if you thought the sound was good enough? Good?, or Great? I just shot an MT450 review, with the DJI on the helmet and the X3000 on a selfie stick, strapped to the back of the bike. Wanted to get some off-the-bike shots, but only had the bike for a short test. I haven't looked at the footage yet, so can't comment on the sound settings, or whether the X3000 gave useable footage on the selfie stick (I'm hoping I'll get at least a couple of good shots out of the 30mins of footage.)
