Orson Welles - I am 86 percent communist

And he sent a few louts over to see me in my office in Hollywood, and they were particularly uneducated and dumb and they fell into a marvelous trap. Because they said to me: 'Are you a card carrying communist?' [...] I said, 'Will you define what a Communist is?' [...] 'Well .... what's a communist .... well, I guess whatever you make goes to government'. I said 'I am 86% communist. The rest is capitalist ... that's the income tax one pays ... I've always wondered how Welles managed to survive in Franco's Spain.

@@tedpilledtonysoprano5512 They still do! There are still halfwits out there trying to shove prejudice down people's throats, they just blend it with different things to try to hide the taste. The most recent crusade has been "Parents' Rights" to pull their kids out of school because schools teach "Critical Race Theory". What is "Critical Race Theory", you might ask? Well, apparently it's lesson plans that emphasize the mistreatment of nonwhite people in America, especially during slavery and Jim Crow. "This is racist," they crow. "This history will teach white kids to hate themselves." But what they usually shrink away from is the fact that white supremacy was (still is, really) literally a feature of life in America and reinforced by the laws of the time, so you can usually twist them into knots by pointing out that in their "free speech" crusade they're actually trying to sanitize and neuter the history that they claim to love! Also present is the "Lavender Scare" that happened about the same time Welles dealt with the Red Scare, in which people were accused of being gay. I was at a school board meeting where a very well-dressed (and I imagine well-paid) conservative activist from outside the district gave a slick speech about how keeping a kid's gay or trans identity secret from their abusive parents was somehow abuse in and of itself. But following that speaker was a literal mob of kids from that district telling stories about how they had been bullied or even physically attacked for being part of the LGBT community, so the board quickly put an end to the conservative's motion. TL;DR: Rightists will always bitch about not being able to abuse people whenever they want, and that's why the rest of us ought to be willing to fight to protect people. Most of the time all you have to do is point out how ridiculous their points are!

They were Communists also. The entire affair was a scam to make the dupe American populace believe that something was being done to combat Communism when in reality they were insidiously installing it. Nikita Kruschev said that Communism would take America without a single shot being fired and he was 100% correct. Today the government spies on everyone using Artificial Intelligence in ways that would have the former Soviet Union totally jealous.

I think it's about high time we stop calling people communist in a bad way. Communism is an idea of equality, not a fascist enemy. It just has been painted as wrong to think left in America for far too long.
