Held in place by Earth's magnetic field, the Van Allen radiation belts periodically swell and shrink in response to incoming energy disturbances from the sun. As the first significant discovery of the space age, the Van Allen radiation belts were detected in 1958 by Professor James Van Allen and his team at the University of Iowa and were found to be composed of an inner and outer belt extending up to 25,000 miles above Earth's surface. In 2013, Baker -- who received his doctorate under Van Allen -- led a team that used the twin Van Allen Probes launched by NASA in 2012 to discover a third, transient "storage ring" between the inner and outer Van Allen radiation belts that seems to come and go with the intensity of space weather. The latest mystery revolves around an "extremely sharp" boundary at the inner edge of the outer belt at roughly 7,200 miles in altitude that appears to block the ultrafast electrons from breeching the shield and moving deeper towards Earth's atmosphere. "It's almost like theses electrons are running into a glass wall in space," said Baker, the study's lead author. "Somewhat like the shields created by force fields on Star Trek that were used to repel alien weapons, we are seeing an invisible shield blocking these electrons. It's an extremely puzzling phenomenon." A paper on the subject was published in the Nov. 27 issue of Nature. The team originally thought the highly charged electrons, which are looping around Earth at more than 100,000 miles per second, would slowly drift downward into the upper atmosphere and gradually be wiped out by interactions with air molecules. But the impenetrable barrier seen by the twin Van Allen belt spacecraft stops the electrons before they get that far, said Baker. The group looked at a number of scenarios that could create and maintain such a barrier. The team wondered if it might have to do with Earth's magnetic field lines, which trap and control protons and electrons, bouncing them between Earth's poles like beads on a string. The also looked at whether radio signals from human transmitters on Earth could be scattering the charged electrons at the barrier, preventing their downward motion. Neither explanation held scientific water, Baker said. "Nature abhors strong gradients and generally finds ways to smooth them out, so we would expect some of the relativistic electrons to move inward and some outward," said Baker. "It's not obvious how the slow, gradual processes that should be involved in motion of these particles can conspire to create such a sharp, persistent boundary at this location in space." Another scenario is that the giant cloud of cold, electrically charged gas called the plasmasphere, which begins about 600 miles above Earth and stretches thousands of miles into the outer Van Allen belt, is scattering the electrons at the boundary with low frequency, electromagnetic waves that create a plasmapheric "hiss," said Baker. The hiss sounds like white noise when played over a speaker, he said. While Baker said plasmaspheric hiss may play a role in the puzzling space barrier, he believes there is more to the story. "I think the key here is to keep observing the region in exquisite detail, which we can do because of the powerful instruments on the Van Allen probes. If the sun really blasts Earth's magnetosphere with a coronal mass ejection (CME), I suspect it will breach the shield for a period of time," said Baker, also a faculty member in the astrophysical and planetary sciences department. "It's like looking at the phenomenon with new eyes, with a new set of instrumentation, which give us the detail to say, 'Yes, there is this hard, fast boundary,'" said John Foster, associate director of MIT's Haystack Observatory and a study co-author. The stars are attached to the Raqia. Read the historian Josephus. The firmament is a physical object that is fitted closely to the earth to enclose the system so that clouds can gather overhead. Most people in the past used the stars as guide, specially ships, to get to different places. We probably won't be able to understand how God really created this beautiful place, but one thing is for sure, is not the way nasa and other agencies put it. The Bible describes exactly the way God made it. I don't think He would lie to us about his creation. Why would he do that? Genesis chapter 1 explains it to the dot and I'm not about to doubt his word, not now, not ever. God bless you all..

The toughest thing I've found is not convincing non-believers that there's a God it's convincing those that believe in the bible to believe in the bible. The idea of expanse for raqia is foreign to ancient literature Josephus, Philo and the Talmud all teach a hard crystalline dome with water above it in the ancient Jewish culture not to mention Ezekiel 1:22 says the word "raqia" for firmament in the text is a hard crystal surface. Josephus said, "After this, on the second day, he placed the heaven over the whole world, and separated it from the other parts; and he determined it should stand by it self. He also placed a cristalline [firmament] round it; and put it together in a manner agreeable to the earth; and fitted it for giving moisture and rain, and for affording the advantage of dews. (The Antiquities of the Jews - Book 1, Chapter 1) The idea of an expanse comes from when realized the stars were far away beyond what they could deny. This is because Genesis says lights as in stars are in the solid firmament as are the sun and moon and then an ocean is behind it. That is obviously wrong since the stars are far away and this comes from how the Egyptians and Mesopotamians viewed cosmology in their myths. Google Egyptian firmament there are paintings and stone works showing what hear about in Genesis.

The firmament is a solid barrier somewhere high up in the sky. When you read in Genesis 7:11 the story of the flood. You see it clearly says “The WINDOWS OF HEAVEN were opened and rain fell upon the earth 40 days and 40 nights. Then in Genesis 8:2 when the flood was subsiding, it clearly says “ the WINDOWS OF HEAVEN were closed and the rain was restrained. in genesis 7:11 it also says that the fountains of the great deep were open up and the great deep means the oceans on the earth and inside the the earth so when you have hot water inside the earth it builds up pressure and when it is released it creates a fountains or geyser spraying water vapor into the air thus forming into clouds which started the flood. Any time you hear that , lets say, a woman's testimony is only half that of a man's , is purely a man made tradition, which the bible warns against. Jesus corrected these traditions and instructed that rich or poor, man or woman,all are equal. Jesus stopped the stoning of a woman having an extramarital affair and said, ' let the one of you who are without sin cast the first stone'.

The problem here again is that they are modernizing everything. You have to take what is written literal. If you take the time to Google firmament. It tells exactly what it is. God never changes, he stays the same. So, if he never changes neither does his creation. Stop interpreting to your idea. It's always his idea, not yours.

I loved this, because I've always related waters above the firmament, to the windows of heaven being opened, during God's flooding of the earth in Noah's time, just like opening a window in your house, there is an inside and an outside of that window. I think expanse is a good interpretation. Whats confusing to people is that they have a heliocentric mindset and must apply "expanse" to something. So the mind instantly applys it to air... when that is the the intent at all. Anyone who looks up Strongs 7549 will get a paradigm shift ;-)

Genesis is not a science book. Was never meant to be a science book. It concerns God's righteousness and lays the foundation for the pattern and the understanding of his righteousness. It is the keys to understanding, not science, but rather God's righteousness. Every statement has a meaning in God's plan of revealing righteousness and not science. God is not revealing science in Genesis. He is revealing his righteousness. The fact that man was created on the sixth day is a key to understand his righteous pattern, not scientific pattern. Thereafter in the scriptures man's number is six and reveals many revelations. Genesis is perfectly constructed to the pattern of his righteousness. It is not about science. We are to grow up in spiritual discernment.

I find it hard to believe that the writers of the creation account in Genesis were not influenced by the much earlier creation stories of ancient mesopotamia where it is clear they thought there was literally water above the firmament and the firmament was where the gods resided. You can spin it any way you like but the similarities are too many and precise to ignore.

Well since I KNOW YHVH is the Creator (and by that I stress KNOW because through my faith and repentance He has revealed Himself to me personally and now lives within me. The Word of God tells us the earth AIN'T freakin moving! It may not be absolutely clear about it's exact appearance, BUT it sure tells us it's not moving! Do you feel as if you are moving right now? Everybody seems to be more concerned with translating the Hebrew word as opposed to examining the actual word that king James’ royal Council used to translate the word. “Firmament” can be explained as such, the suffix “-ment” means “mental”, such as “govern-ment” means “to govern the mind”. “Firma-“ is greek and means “plane”, such as “terra firma” means “earth plane”... therefore “firmament” would essential imply “mental-plane” or the imagination also known as the “ether”. everything that exists in this world begins in the thoughts of our minds. we are created in gods image (image-nation). just like God created everything in this world, we are given the ability to pull from this imagination and create in the material world.

Also there exists no word in Greek "firma" that means plane and "Terra firma" is a Latin term which means 'solid earth', not 'earth plane'.

KJV says heaven and FIRMament. The modern Bibles call it heavens and expanse so it lines better with the "science" of heliocentric

I don't know where he's getting the idea that of the 17 times that the firmament is mentioned, that 8 of those times it's not talking about the same thing as in Genesis. I have read all of the passages about the firmament and it's the same thing in all of them just like Genesis. There is no "wiggle room" unless you don't understand the passages that the word firmament is used in, which I can only assume that to be the case here since he doesn't understand that it's the same thing. 5 of those 8 are in Ezekiel 1 & 10 and Ezekiel is definitely seeing the Firmament in the heaven. 1 of those 8 says that the firmament shows god's handiwork-that's definitely referring to him CREATING the firmament, 1 is in Daniel speaking of those who are wise shining like the firmament. In other words, those that are wise to what is happening in the final days will be bright and glorious like the firmament. Why is the firmament bright a glorious? Because the stars are inside of it! The last passage is in Psalms 150:1 and although this is definitely referring to the firmament, it would take a lot of space here to explain what that passage actually means. I think the problem with the word "Expanse" in our English understanding is that we think of an "Expanse" as an unending open space, but Expanse means the distance of how far something expands. An inch cane be an expanse, but so can a mile. I am glad to see that he doesn't believe that the firmament dissolved after the flood. It's a first step.

While watching the time lapse videos I discovered that the only way my eyes and brain makes sense of them, is that earth is flat, and there's a dome overhead. THEN I found out the Bible says the same thing. THAT made me happy to know that the whole Bible is scientifically correct, from Genesis 1 forward.

It’s interesting to me to hear people grapple with the meaning of the creation story. The word firmament is defined as an archway, which is what the sky looks like from earth. The firmament separating the waters explains why it rains, why the sky is blue, because water looks blue. A primitive explanation by people trying to understand their physical world. Amazingly, the creation story goes on to talk about how God created everything but it doesn’t say he creates the water, that was already there before he created anything almost like without the water he couldn’t have created the firmament at all. I also believe when God said let there be light, he wasn’t referring to physical light but pure energy.

He created the firmament (dome) on the second day because in the beginning there was water everywhere. We are told that the Spirit of God hovered over the waters (Genesis 1:2) before anything was created. Once the firmament (dome) was created, the waters above it that were there originally didn't go anywhere. Earth is also described as a circle and the heavens stretched out like a tent (Isaiah 40:22). If you also look into amateur videos of stars instead of from satellite imagery and CGI, you'll notice that even on the moon there is waves -- this shows that there is water behind it as well as behind stars. It's the truth, and the truth will set you free (John 8:32).

Can the temperature of the cosmic background radiation be measured? Can the wavelength and frequency of the radiation be measured? Does water at the temperature of the background radiation produce the kind of radiation that is observed?

SO, where does the part where He placed the sun moon and stars IN the firmament come into play, giving it the great attention that you gave your own narrative?

There is, in Hebrew, the disjunctive Waw; the disjunctive Waw is attached to a non-verb in the beginning of its clause. The function of this disjunctive Waw is to make a break in a prior narrative sequence. Verse two of Genesis begins with a disjunctive Waw attached to the definite noun the Earth. It is from this point that the creation narrative actually begins- which is why it seemed the heavens were created twice. This is seen clearly in the fact that the dry land was what God called the earth- which happened on the third day. The Hebrew word raqi'a is, in reality, a passive participle acting as an adjective or noun; in Hebrew this is called a benuni savil [בינוני סביל] or a qatil [קָטִיל]. This means that the word raqi'a is that which is being stretched or being expanded- the action is not complete. This is evident in the expanding nature of the universe itself. The raqi'a is, definitely, the place we refer to as space and is the place in which the heavenly bodies were placed. The birds, as explained on the fifth day, fly on the "face of the expanse of the heavens" which means that they fly before or in front of the raqi'a of the heavens. The Hebrew pani means literally faces, but is used for presence or the position of being before or in front of someone or something.

the question rises then: if water surrounds the universe, and in the beginning was on Earth, then it's such enormous amount of water, that could easily transcend the size of our galaxy. So you actually can't say it was on Earth, considering the size of Earth compared to our galaxy

Expanse has been introduced in modern Bible translations by the scholars like yourself you have been deceived into believing in the heliocentric model of cosmology.

The firmament does not mean expanse or heaven. The ancients believed the earth was flat. The expanse was what was on THE OTHER SIDE of the firmament. Genesis seems to confirm their theory.

Could only get through half of this episode. This Danny guy is explaining the bible according to Danny. I HATE when teachers/pastors/elders/etc reinterpret the bible according to their knowledge. They set themselves up as the expert and you have to come back to them for interpretation. They become smart in their own eyes...I think God warns of doing this, eh? The stars are an after thought not something to build your thesis. For everyone else, read the bible and let the bible speak to you...remove your bias...remove your public education...let the words of the bible sink in. Gen 1:16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.

It's very simple people. The Firmament is our atmosphere and the "waters above" are the rain, snow, sleer, hail, and general moisture/humidity in the air/atmosphere. In addition to the oxygen, argon, and nitrogen gases which make up the air that we breathe, there is also water vapor/moisture/humidity that we take in with every breath. When the air becomes too saturated with water vapor and can no longer be supported by the air molecules, it is released as rain, etc. back down to the Earth's surface containing the "waters below".

Nothing has changed, other than we now know where rain comes from. The writers of the OT of the Bible did not understand this. Also, I'm still sticking by my guns that a bunch of simple goat herders did not understand weather patterns, including how precipitation is created. You used the word firmament often as the word that scripture uses to describe the area between the waters, until that changed to expanse as you tried to develop a case for it to refer to space, even to the point that these waters above are some how billions or trillions of light years away, I hope that by now , or by sometime soon, you revisit your thoughts concerning the firmament/expanse. Also, adding other, confirming scriptures, such as Amos 9:6 and the use of a Hebrew Lexicon would be helpful. Keep looking, the truth is " in there" ( The Bible )., you"ll soon be gettin closer ( pun intended ).

This was interesting since just last night I was reading the first 16 verses of Chapter 1 of Genesis and wondered about the "waters above and below the firmament (expanse)". I had questions about what I read but was discussed in this video. I thank Dr. Faulkner for answering those questions. Actually, my thoughts on the subject were surprisingly close to those presented by Dr. Faulkner. But, there is one question I have that still remains a mystery to me. We see the stars God created. They seem to be continually moving away from us. We measure the distance from the stars in time and not units of distance. The "assumption" is the speed of the light generated by a star travels at 186,000 miles/sec. If that is true and the observations of the stars are correct then how do we explain the time it took to be billions and billions of years to get to our eyes when we trust the Bible to say the creation of that star and its light was only about 6,000 years ago? The only conclusion I can come up with is that the speed of light is really instant and the star we see today is from today and not billions of years ago. But, if that is true, what kind of impact will "instant" light have on our known physics and astronomy?

Good stuff. Grateful for Mr. Faulkner's research. Glad he is being open to new discoveries in the universe. We humans have such an infinitesimally tiny and finite knowledge of our infinitely omniscient and miraculous Creator. Our quest for knowledge must never end.
