    that calming effect of a goat on a horse makes sense, when you think about it. both are "flight over fight" animals, just that goats give much fewer fucks. seeing a smaller fellow prey animal just chilling out, reassures the paranoid horse, that there's no danger around. there are plenty of other examples, for this mechanism working, like having little "dither fish" in an aquarium.

    @Nick SkunkFox some fish (freshwater Angelfish for example) may need a dither fish, a smaller typically schooling minnow-style fish would be introduced to swim around and reassure the anxious fish that's okay to come out from hiding because if the dither fish is calm it probably means there are no predators out and about.

  • @coneberry6905

    @coneberry6905

    3 жыл бұрын

    In english the word well means good, so 'you look well' is the same as 'you look good'. Now, if you go to a store to buy a black pen, but they only have blue pens, you 'may as well' buy a blue pen, because a blue pen is 'as well' (as good) as a black pen. Instead of might, you could also use may or could, as in 'may as well' and 'could as well'; the meaning wouldn't change. You don't hear people often saying 'could as good' or 'might as good', but i'd say they're still correct.

    Here's one I just learned the origin of recently "goose is cooked" which means someone is completely screwed. It originated in the 15th century after the execution of the famous Czech theologian Jan Hus who allegedly uttered the phrase "this goose is cooked" as he was about to be burned at the stake for heresy. This was a dark joke as his surname Hus sounds like the German word for goose.

    In a 1973 novel also called "Mumbo Jumbo," African-American author Ishmael Reed delved into the history of the term. (This novel turned out to be among Reed's most successful works and a finalist for the National Book Award). He noted the phrase originally referred to a "magician who makes the troubled spirits of the ancestors go away." Throughout the book, Reed tries to connect black Americans in the present with their African past.

    The phrase “read the writing on the wall” comes from the Bible in the book of Daniel during the Babylonian rule Nebuchadnezzar lost his mind for while and his son, Belshazzar, became ruler. His son was a party animal and he was partying pretty hardy one night, and a hand appeared and started writing his judgment on the wall, he was so scared he crapped himself. No one could read the writing on the wall. Which is ironic because people say it now to mean “look at the obvious” but the actual writing on the wall could not be read until later.

    The American empire has committed genocide and kept several children in their torture camp in which they still use today, the British empire has used concentration camps specifically targeted towards people of colors to test mustard gas post-WW1. Each of these empires has at one time supported fascist Germany, make no mistake, every American, British, German, French, etc. politician must be killed. The United States has also murdered and tortured thousands of people based on the color of their skin in forced labor camps. While the USSR, UK, France, and other imperial nations have abolished penal labor in the 50s the US remains, using it as constitutionally legal slavery according to the very amendment that is touted as destroying slavery. It is only through a Marxist-Leninist revolution that we can have an end to the bloodshed caused by the final violent breaths of capitalism, an economic system with the theory of cancer: constant growth while killing it's host. Capitalism not only destroys the Earth, it also destroys it's very self, it justifies it's existence with more and more violence, and with this violence, will come conditions ripe for revolution. We simply must direct the revolutionary anger into the correct direction, once we do, a utopia

    "Balls to the Wall" originated earlier than airplanes & throttle sticks, they came from the use of Centrifugal Governors on various machines at the start of the industrial era. The Governor had two heavy balls that would "move out" with the rotational force, hitting a throttle shut off that prevents it from spinning faster. "Balls to the Walls" or "balls out" meant Letting the balls fly at their most outward, letting the engine go as fast as it was able. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centrifugal_governor
