Origins and Identity: The Story of Europe, Part 1 | Full Historical Documentary

Ойын-сауық

Where and when does the history of Europe begin? The traces lead to ancient Greece, and more precisely to Crete. Here we not only find the first high culture of the continent, but also the founding myth, to which it owes its name: The story of the kidnapping of the Phoenician princess Europa by the Greek god Zeus. Follow narrator Christopher Clark as he recounts the history of the European continent through the centuries in the 6-part documentary series.

His ideas haven't moved on since the days of Gibbon. This is a dated idea of Europe. None of the ancient world that he presents as foundation for the very idea of Europe we wouldn't have access to without it being preserved, interpreted & disseminated by Arab scholars.

I adored this documentary. As i greek i can say that there are some important missing parts of ancient greek history ( Philosophy, history, medicine, criticism, maths, olympics, sparta and its oen democratic principles - public education, equality in fortune). Great alexander and macedonians didn t conquered greece, because they were part of it ( same language, religion, traditions, participation at olympics). Actually ancient cities were often fighting one another. They are called greece because everytine needed they were united and because of what is known as "panhellenic bonds". Though i totally understand that you cannot include every detail in such a documentary. Thank you very much for the great job. The narrator is awesome!

Not only in the documentaries, but also in his books. I'm just reading "Iron Kingdom" about Prussia's history - it's just excellent. 3:30. Right then and there you can tell this is nothing but neo nationalism, which ignores all evidence that doesn't support its agenda. The first homo sapient in Europe (the ones that intermixed with neanderthals) we know for a fact based on dna, were people related to ancestors of East Asians and Melanesians, haplogroup K. And we have their descendents, haplogroup R, showing up in locations like Italy 15 thousand years ago, or Spain 11 thousand years ago. Showing clear genetic continuity over a vast period of time. The first Europeans, as well as more recent hunter-gatherers did not come by way of the route shown here.. It is non factual.

That incredible art, those painting, were not created by chance. Those paintings were created by educated People...There must of being an incredible civilization who was destroyed and those people who survived were trying to send a message...this is what I believe.

Regarding the eight legged bison depicted on the cave walls, it was suggested by Werner Herzog in his documentary “cave of forgotten dreams” that a lit torch in a cave would flicker, and might create the illusion of movement by the bison.

Heya northerner here, I'd like to set one thing straight. The Germanic people in Europe had a fast trading network during the entire Roman time. They sold the Romans ships, cattle and where famous for their horses who where a bit bigger than the pony's the Romans used but still pony's bij today's measures. People on the coast sailed to Scandinavia from the iron age on. People build living mounts in tidal areas even small dikes and polders. A coastal living mount near my house has been dug up and they found Roman artefacts, money jewelry. They started building on the mount in the year 200 and you can't build defense against the sea with just a village so.. no they weren't backwards people. How would they have fought the Romans successfully if they still lived ages behind?
