Original Mind the Gap Announcement - Northern Line Embankment
Фильм және анимация
The original 'Mind the Gap' announcement by Oswald Laurence can now only be heard on the Northbound Northern Line platforms at Embankment Station. This announcement dates from 1969, when London Transport first started to tell passengers to 'Mind the Gap'. The original announcment was reinstated by TfL in 2013, after hearing the story of Oswald Laurence's widow, who liked hearing his voice there. Here, a Northern Line service to High Barnet approaches Embankment.

Embankment is one of my favorite stops, I was wondering why the announcement was too loud, I didn't know the story behind it. It's really nice of TFL doing it for Laurence's wife. Great city with great people.

Wait why is the announcement loud?
@InchonDM
4 жыл бұрын
@@TheDATominator Possibly Mrs. Laurence was/is a little hard of hearing in her old age. That or it's the original volume the announcement was recorded on, and when it's running through a digital system instead of analog it sounds louder because of better speakers.

The iconic "MIND, THE GAP" seen the story behind this, very sad. Is it only embankment where you can hear his voice or have they got a new voice in?

They only play it at Embankment because they never used Oswald Laurence's recording in the end. It has only ever been used for sentimental reasons at Embankment.

Awe the story behind this is sad and wholesome
In 1983 as a 10 year old, I told my Mum that I felt sorry for the guy who has to say 'Mind the gap' every time a train pulls in. She's never let me forget it.
I believe they also used to have this announcement for the jubilee line at Finchley Road and Wembley Park.
Thank you.
i would listin to this for hours

In 1968, London Underground chose digital recording using solid state equipment with no moving parts. Because storage space was very expensive, the recording had to be short and concise. I mean, less than 20 years ago SD and microSD cars with 512 MB (yes, megabyte) were high tech, and now with deep enough pockets and an unquenchable thirst for storage space, 1TB microSD cards are readily available.
