Your Hero1 shots are better than most people's Hero9 shots. The first models were amazing for the time.

I miss the sun flares in the lense from the original hero. They definitely have this quality to them that is so nostalgic. If only they kept that feeling

Obviously the Hero 9 is much better, but the Hero 1 has a very nice vintage/warm look to it which is very pleasant somehow, especially when the lens flares

You know, for a tiny video camera from 2009 that looks really damn good!

Add stabilization and the retro vibes are immaculate

I remember my first Hero back in 2011...huge difference! Nowadays anyone takes smooth footage with the 9 ;) Good video as always Abe!!

I feel like the Hero1 and Hero2 has a certain look to them (colors, sunflares etc) which sits right with me. Probably just from watching all of your old USC Ski & Snowboard videos

Nice video as always, I started with Hero 2 and now have a Hero 9 with Max lens mod. I also like my DJI Osmo Action.

GoPro 1 had amazing quality for its time! It's pretty sweet to see evolution, especially when it comes to stabilization! I'm really stocked about what the GoPro 10 will be able to do 😎

Such a cool comparison. I worked at a ski resort this winter as a lift operator and I was shocked at how many people were sporting GoPro 4 or earlier. Love my 9 and 7.

Stabilization is the ultimate KEY honestly

Great videos as always ! In the end this vintage look of the hero 1 is really nice on a video, looks like she is wearing a permanent ND filter. Bravo to the engineers, bravo to the developers and as we say in France -> C'est dans les vieux pots qu'on fait les meilleures confitures (The best jams are made in old jars) 😂😎

Stabilization makes so much difference 💯

To correct my last post: The difference is astonishing. Only with an external gimbal (such as FeiyuTech Gimbals) and much effort I could shoot stable footage as the 9 films without gimbals today. Thanks for the info Abe :)

Thanks for making this look-back video, Abe. We're making gimbals obsolete with horizon leveling and superb in-camera stabilization! Liking my Hero 9 but now, I want the Max Lens Mod for high resolution while using the horizon leveling on the XC bike. I'm a little worried though, how much torque does it take to remove the original lens? Might be doing it wrong andI don't want to break it.

You won’t break it. It’s all metal under there. Sometimes it’s a little hard, just give it a good twist. Sometimes I put it in a vice and turn ! Shouldn’t need to do that though

The HD hero is pretty amazing for an action cam in 09

That audio from the Hero1 gave me ptsd. Obviously image is the standout but major props for no more ear assault.

Will the GoPro 18 be as much of a leap as this was?

To be honest, and I may be talking rubbish here. But with the Hero HD, I find the footage to be more honest, more realistic, and quite nostalgic. Obviously the Hero 9 is amazing, but, I do love to get back to basics.

i totaly agree - you feel the action - in the beginning i was digging for stabilisation with gimbals etc. but with more and more drones on the market an better software everything is looking the same. I feel like sometimes with the super smooth footage the audience isn´t feeling how rough or bumpy the hill was because its that much stabelized.... Hope im not talking rubbish here and perople understand what i mean Its come that far that i add shakyness to footage in production that it looks more realistic and not boring af :D kida misses the point maybe :D

Do you know the actual FOV of the OG Hero?

The hd hero isn’t too bad of course when you zoom in it begins to show its age though it’s still quite shaky but you can still make out what’s going on which is what I like it’s still not terrible by todays standards but if you want professional cameras you’re gonna want the hero 9

Honestly the hero1 is still relevant. Seems ancient and yet it's still better than any UFO, bigfoot, or security cam video out there haha

Blues are bluer, no sun halo, better definition, less wind noise, and I think the best upgrade: hyper smooth.

It’s pretty dramatic. The wide angle and stabilization is amazing. I feel like a few times the 9 is a bit dark. But that’s probably a user issue or a post fix. The color on the 9 kills the the 1.

Yeah I film with the EV comp at -0.5 for color correction. Would always rather under expose than overexpose!

Good lordenough about the lens fares guys. Yes theyre cool, but in terms of document worthy stills, the hero 9 could provide scientists with extremely detailed photos using just stills from those videos.

Since HD HERO has to be in protective housing, does HERO9 get to be in one, or at least the floaty? If not, can we do test with both cameras outside of housing? With tempered glass protector on LCD and since it has a removable/replaceable lens protector, HERO9 might be the winner. The HD HERO camera itself wasn't particularly rugged. It was the housing that provided the protection.

@@JudoSurfer It was just an ironic comment about the fact that the new cameras are less and less 'action cams' out of the box: pressure resistance, scratchability, pin strength, software stability... Is all this due to the lack of housing and a much more sophisticated software? Of course!

Hero 9 is crisp. Hero 1 footage is definitely crisp too... but "filmed with a potato chip" crisp. 😆🥔
