I just found this series and I find it extremely compelling so far. It is not like other streamed or filmed RPG sessions - which tend to either be unwatchable messes or fall back on the acting skill of the performers In contrast, with only one player who is also the DM, it feels tight and well-paced while still having that element of intrigue you can only get when neither you nor the cast know what will happen next Looking forward to catching up

Considering 1-on-1 adventures (not solo) that flesh out this mapping process to feed a larger group seems like a superb way to spice things up.

Very Cool!! Great memory of playing Outdoor Survival and an excellent use of helping with adventure generation. Now, about the mapper... IMHO, for solo play, there needs to be more for the walkabout. Even with all the wandering about, you effectively just jumped to the map and then you as the Game Master can have a seed to write your adventure. Let's face it, that's all the mapper affectively accomplished- unless death occurs and then the searched for item should be taken by a random encounter and dropped in a lair or put somewhere randomly (check every turn some % to stumble across it). Perhaps depending on how many turns or encounters the mapper had, they may decide to bump the price of the map up! Hard retrieval, High Price! How can the mapper have a more exciting time out in the field? more treasure, magic items? Can they buy some equipment to make the next finding mission easier after returning? Random finds such as a speed potion, flying potion (movement is unaffected by terrain), etc. Maybe a friendly encounter where they get food or water from the encounter. Even though it is solo play you can have multiple competing mappers in the same quadrant coming in from the same or adjacent edges. How do they know where to look? Maybe they have some divining method or magic to help point in the general direction. Then they go through a searching process. Mappers can sabotage each other or just simply try to get to the items first. Perhaps there can be a stalking and stealing opportunity too. This treasure/magic map retrieval process of course can be the seed to a descriptive entry for when the party comes to see what adventure map they want- what can they afford, what are they willing to sit through while the mapper boastfully shares his woeful burdensome adventure tales (and lies). Perhaps on the mission, the mapper spotted some random camps etc. to warn the party about- There are FOUR Gold dragons in the area FOUR! Slay dragon opportunity? An exchange of knowledge? Chance for the party to gain some powerful allies? I love the concept of advancement for the Mapper as time goes on! This could be a feat or sub-class modifier. Every so many levels or successful missions, they gain bonuses for skills. +1 for survival, +1 to investigation, rolling advantage, etc. Perhaps they run an Acquisitions Incorporated type business or become a sponsor for adventurers... Love to see your coming videos on this!

It would be interesting to see the data on what the original players did, what they used. Etc. unfortunately if they as a group we’re not asked these questions in interviews years ago we will probably never know. Both Gary and Dave passed away years ago and I suspect many of the original players have as well. There’s still some of them around but getting the time and man power to track them down and ask them ‘did you actually use the outdoor survival map?’ And such would be a monumental task.

Just watched this great video for something like the fifth time, as I am trying to decipher as much as I can about how you are using Outdoor Survival with OD&D. I think I got it now. I’ve been doing nearly the same thing in my own solo plays. A couple of questions: do you always use Scenario 3 (the Search scenario), and have you ever tried to incorporate the “wilderness encounter” charts on the back of the scenario cards? In my game, I have eliminated the check for just a monster encounter as called for in OD&D, and instead I check for a “wilderness encounter”, per the chart on the scenario card. If the check turns up Personal or Natural Hazard encounters, I use them as stated on the card, which can affect the party’s rations and water stores, or even cause them injuries (i.e., loss of life levels, and hence a decrease in movement rate). If the check turns up “animal/insect” as the type of wilderness encounter, only then do I check for a random monster using the monster charts in OD&D by terrain type. I like the variety this brings to the unfolding story; that not all encounters have to be with monsters.

This is really cool! I can't get anybody to play outdoor survival with me as a game by itself, but combining this with a role play game sounds doable and fun, Even if I'm not doing D&D. Most of the people in my family find the game boring. The problem I have with outdoor survival is the disparity between what the map seems to represent and what the dice seem to represent. I as a player can look at the map and know exactly where the resources and safe spots are, but the dice seem to represent a fool out wandering about completely ignorant of the landscape. What person in the right mind would walk right past food when they're starving? Why does this person just walking a straight line all day? Outdoor survival by itself feels like I'm just trying to make good decisions based on bad roles, instead of actually strategizing and planning a proper course of action based on knowledge of the map. It's the little things like that that frustrate me with the game and I would like to see a revised movement roll table. Maybe that's just me.
