Very minor nitpick: A Kibbutz isn't necessarily a settlement (or rather, a disputed settlement). A kibbutz is a small populated area (small village size) that used to operate on small scale communism. Basically a Kibbutz isn't necessarily more controversial than any other Israeli city or village and is more characterized by the life-style than relations to the conflict. And as with other cities and villages can be a disputed settlement or controversial depending on where it is and what one thinks of the conflict as a whole. Oh and you pronounced it correctly. I think they r basing it of European/EU Defense Initiative aka EDI from Ultimate universe, what was basically a European/EU thing where each country have their own version of Captain America, but most of their powers comes from the suits that they r wearing instead of a serum or something. Basically their version of Weapon Plus in a way. Captain Britain is part of it as well, Brain Braddock had the prototype suit and that had some side effect what unalived him (well that and a attack from Magneto have put him in a coma), his brother Jamie (not a mutant as far as we know in this universe) took over. There was a plot of Loki where he warped reality slowly 2 pretend that Thor was part of it as well and that the suit that Thor was wearing was making him think he was the Norse God Thor and that his actual name was Thorlief Golmen. But the MCU makes it a world wide version instead of just Europe/EU. All-Captains Squad from Super Hero Squad cartoon is basically a parody of it. But that version is world wide.

It was my understanding the issue was more [regardless of how she got her name b/c don’t recall] that it was announced in the same month as the 40th anniversary of the sabra & shatila refugee camp massacre during the lebanese civil war while the idf just stood around the camp & watched. The connections seem perhaps a bit of a reach but the poor optics seems surprising for disney when it’s like the 3rd result after the hummus brand & the informal hebrew word for a jew born in israel. But maybe the controversy is the point?

They couldn't recreate the process correctly, that's why the other Caps all tend to go crazy or had to gets powers another way.

What I find interesting is the concern people are having for Captain Israel, while Russia is fighting Ukrainian and we’ve got Captain KGB getting the poster cover for the thunderbolts. Or Shang Chi already having his own movie despite the Muslim holocaust camps being run by the CCP in China.

Fictional characters are supposed to be for fun, or to provide a teachable moment, but people just like to be offended. I'm still waiting for the issue of Captain America where he frees the Japanese-American interment prisoners or prevents the Gulf of Tonkin incident or massacres of indigenous peoples of north America or any number of other situations where America was the ''good'' guy because America can do no wrong and only every other country deserves it's actions scrutinized.

First off, christ, old Hulk being a threst EVERYWHERE....further makes me happy we got The Professor. If Hulk didn't leave after Avengers 2, that wouldve happened in the MCU. Anyway, I dont mind this change. Its a low-tier Marvel character, so the MCU is making her cool. And considering all the racewash roles STILL happening, I'll take this, because they're not turning an already established character, into being Israeli. And the funny thing is that Gal Gadot wouldve been perfect for this because of her background, if she wasnt already busy with Wonder Woman 3. The idea of Capt inspiring others all over the world to be the Captains of their respective countries, I dig it. I think people referring to her as the Israeli Captain America is more of a way to describe the fact that she's a patriotic superhero for israel. I don't think it's meant to imply that she's a super soldier in the same way that Captain America is.

I think it's a simple concept. Remember 99.9% of moviegoers don't have the weapons plus backstory, as that's not really part of the MCU yet...it's more a case of any government sanctioned/created super soldier is generically going to termed "the Captain America of..." Really even for an old head like myself, the whole weapons plus retcon came long after I had stopped regularly reading comics, I pretty much came to understand that arc from this channel.

when they say captain America of isreal. it means she serves the role of the national hero of the state not that she is related to captain American in any way.....

It's likely that Sabra will be kept very 'surface level' for this movie. Unless they end up keeping her on for future projects, I'd be surprised if they go in depth on anything more than just making her a superhero from another country, for better or worse. It's what they've done with basically all one-off characters in the MCU.

Did one of the stories she was first featured in consist of a cast of heroes, each representing their home nation? I remember reading a Marvel story like that when I was very young, and it featuring a CCP hero, who could channel certain strengths of the combined Chinese people

It's obvious they want Sabra to be like The Scarlet Scarab in the MCU. I don't mind it because it's obvious they're trying to create a international superhero scope. I imagine we'll get "Israelis and Palestinians need to kiss-n-makeup" propaganda too in the film.

Why does Weapons Plus have to be a part of Sabra's history for her to be the closest thing to Captain Israel? It isn't a part of Captain Britain's history either, essentially, as his powers are mystical. I don't think that's what people mean when they call her that.

“Israel’s Captain America” isn’t tying it to the Weapon+ program or anything like that; it’s saying she’s basically “Captain Israel.” It’s a comparison, not a link. Unless I missed something in the MCU statements, anyway.

I don't mind if they are respectful towards the history of what has happened between Israel and Palestine. When Sabra was introduced, the First Intifada hadn't happened yet. Basically it's been 40 years since Sabra was introduced and Marvel should reflect that.

I wanna know what the MCU’s motivation was behind Whitewashing Thunderball in She Hulk, and why no one kept applying pressure about it like they did with the news about Sabra (who’s probably an even more obscure character than TB)

I get what you're trying to say, but Mandela was a violent terrorist. He was given several oppurtunies to reduce his sentence if he would publicly denounce political violence, he refused. He was a communist who received training by israeli mossad to bring down one of the few stable governments in sub sahara africa. You can argue that south african apartheid was wrong if you want, but isn't that what israel practices? If you look at the crime stats before and after apartheid ended, especialy violent crime, the difference is jarring.
