Koi (鯉) and koi(恋)are two different words. The first word means Koi fish. The latter one means lover. They sound the same. lol~ Sean has a good sense of humor. Love his interview!

Carp in Japanese are called Koi (鯉) not Goi. When we combine two words into one, sometimes the sound transforms into the Nigori sound to make it easier to pronounce. So Nishiki(colorful like Japanese brocade) + Koi (carp) = NishikiGoi Btw, Koi as for love is 恋(pronounced also as Koi)

3:01 I think there's a mixing of some similar sounding words here. It is confusing but to kill is "korosu" not "karass", the color black is "kuro", and the crow is "karasu". So the koi's name Karasu-goi straightly translates to Crow-koi. If there's a related word in front of Koi it becomes Goi, it has the same function as using "-", to tie two words as one word or as a name. So you see many other koi names ending in "goi" as well, but don't use "goi" to refer to a koi fish in general. As a guru/pro I think it's so so important to memorize well, pronounce it correctly and clearly on all syllables for maintaining credibility. Thanks for the history part and making informative videos! Interesting!

Actually the real history, Japanese never had these Nishigigoi until the 18th century after the Imperial court of China gifted the price of Japan their first colored koi fish. These gems were originated in china and till today not many people know the most beautiful koi fish is swimming in the province of Jiangsu,China. The Japanese made koi fishes famous. But if you wanna get the real deal, you should visit China where these carps was kept by emperors back in those days. Way more beautiful from the ones you see in Japan.

hmmm, tattoos placed on private body spots "nevermind then!"...AND cuss words too?! kore wa nan desu ka? :-/ oooh ...I'll have to add that one to my cuss-you-out-in-japanese verbal arsenal! hehe just kidding (or am I???) ;-) Yeah, about Nishiki"koi" and Nishiki"goi"...another example I can think of that would also be like this is: Koromo and Goromo.

Unfortunately this story is made up balony (as our American cousins say). Carp originated in China, they made their way to Japan by means of gifts to the Emporer Keiko. Recorded accounts of colour mutation breeding of Carp in China date back more more than a thousand years ago, along with coloured versions of the Prussian carp which became goldfish. They had previosuly been kept as food fish in China and still are, dating right back to the fith Century BC. The very first mention of carp which were not native to Japan was very much later, these fish were gifted to the Emperor Keiko from China. It's not clear if the fish were coloured or food fish.
