Origin - Movie Review: Why this movie is so important.

Ойын-сауық

Origin is a powerful and remarkable movie that is directed by Ava DuVernay(Selma) and stars Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (King Richard), Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead) and Niecy Nash(Dahmer). Its based on the best selling book Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents written by Isabel Wilkerson. This movie has a powerful message but is the movie worth your time?

Loved this film so much, I agree with your review. Its such an important film and I think the people who dismiss it or didn't like it or don't want to see it aren't ready to really look at what it's saying and seeing the reality of it all. It had me crying several times, especially at the end when Isabel is summarizing the pillars of caste and the Al Bright swimming pool scene. Once you start being able to see what this idea is teaching, you start to be able to see how far this spans and how ingrained it is in societies all over the world. It goes so much farther than just how the black population is treated in America or the Holocaust or the caste systems in India. It's everywhere. It's in religious conflicts, Isreal and Palestine, the Rwandan genocide, the Armenian genocide, the treatment of Indiginous peoples all over the world, the "othering" of minority populations, politics, the structures of capitalism, all of it. It's all driven by the creation of these invisible hierarchical structures of power that somehow seemed to be ingrained in human nature. It's so much bigger than just the stories that are portrayed in the movie and book.

How is possible you never heard of the word "Caste"? And indictment to Anglo American education, or pseudo-education. Geesh!

Well either my schooling failed me, or I wasn't paying attention. The important thing is I'm aware now and believe its an important subject. I'm hoping more people see this movie, and watch with an open mind so we can fix this broken and silly concept.

@@ShowtimeandJoysticks I am looking forward to see the movie. I wonder how she describes and deploys the word Casta and its history. This word is of Spanish and Portuguese origin, and it was first used in the 15th century to describe lineages between Old Christians (Iberian non-Jews) and New Christians (recently converted Iberian Muslims and Jews to Christianity). From there it was passed on to be used to categorize other people from other non-European phenotypes, and their mixtures. It was adopted in English in the 17th century. Look up Limpieza de Sangre for more context.

I too learned about Caste systems, in my early teens, when the Beatles talked about the unfair system in India, my mom further explained.

It did seem like it didn’t get enough attention. I’ve been pleased to see people watching this review though. I assume that means most viewers either saw or plan to which is great. The more people see this movie, the better the world could be. It’s so eye opening.
