🎵 Organ Concert - Southwark Cathedral (one of the best in LONDON)

Музыка

James Gough plays the 1897 Lewis & Co organ of Southwark Cathedral in an Organ Recital for BEAUTY IN SOUND.
As James says in the video, Lewis & Co were greatly inspired by the German organ builder Schulze, and the Germanic influences are quite clear - especially in the epic Passacaglia by Max Reger!
This album is available to purchase from the BIS Shop: www.beautyinsound.co.uk/produ...
00:00 | Louis Vierne - Toccata
04:14 | JS Bach - Trio Sonata No 6 in G Major BWV 530
16:48 | David Bednall - Fantasia on 'Thaxted'
25:18 | William Boyce - Symphony No 4 in F (arr. Arthur Hutchings)
30:46 | Louis Vierne - Clair de Lune
40:31 | Max Reger - Introduction and Passacaglia in F minor Op. 63
I'd be very grateful for a voluntary donation to help cover the costs of this concert. Thank you.

PS look out in the video for the Cathedral Cat - Hodge!

Making money is not my primary objective. After expenses are taken into consideration, remaining revenue is invested back into BEAUTY IN SOUND. Audio and visual equipment is expensive, and I also pay a fair fee to all recitalists who appear on BIS. This is why I regularly ask YOU to help, and I’m sorry for having to do so. I hope that you can all see the tangible improvements being made to BIS along our shared journey.

This might be one of my favourite organs. That Vierne - what a way to open the program! 👏👏👏

I am properly astounded by everything in this video: not only the editing and recording is (yet again) amazing, but also the playing is just next-level. I have never heard the Vierne Tocatta played in such a fine and precise manner: this performance is the first that makes me like the piece! Also the trio sonata is amazing: the tempo is nice and fast, yet the playing is not rushed and incredibly clear: to date I have never heard this piece played at this tempo with this degree of accuracy.

What a magnificent sound! James played so confidently and well. The video of the Bach trio ,where it split into five screens and put his hands next to his feet- made me laugh. It reminded me of a figure under a mediaeval choir seat called a sciapod.

Filthy chords at the end of the Bednall! I bet you enjoyed playing that Goughy. Your trio sonata was immaculate and Dr Glyn Jenkins would have said it “sounded well”. Bravo, terrific playing xx

The architecture of Southwark Cathedral bears a striking resemblance to that of Salisbury Cathedral. Both were, of course, built around the same time (although the nave of Southwark Cathedral was rebuilt in the 19th century).

The original cathedral cat, Doorkins, was originally a stray cat who would visit regularly (after initially coming to the cathedral in 2008) and was later adopted by the cathedral. When she died in 2020, there was a memorial service for her. Eventually, the cathedral got another cat, Hodge.

Max Reger is a very difficult composer for a many of organ player. He self Said about his own fame: „I will (after my death) be laid to the old iron, but my time will come“.. In my opinion Reger is by his life history one of the interessant composer at the beginning 20th Century totally underestimated. Reger was in 1900/1901 in his Upper Palatinate time, where Vierne would be in early 1920. He was catholic by uprising, but married to a lutheran women. His most pieces have themes of lutheran Chorals. He was big defender of J. S. Bach, but in his words his music was catholic on to the Finger tips. That all is a difficult thing; but as a man, grow up in the Upper Palatinate with Reger Great Introduktions to chorals, Reger give a lot of good Music
