Ordnance Research SSP-91, aka the Lone Eagle

Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/collections/forg...
Designed by John Foote (of MAC/Cobray fame), the SSP-91 is a single shot rifle-caliber pistol intended for silhouette competition shooting and handgun hunting. It was introduced by Foote and Ordnance Technology of Stetson, Maine in 1986 as the SSP-86. He made some improvements to the design in 1990, resulting in the improved SSP-91 model available form 1991 until 1993. In 1994, the rights were purchased by Magnum Research, who renamed is the Lone Eagle (to fit their eagle-themed catalog - Desert Eagle, Baby Eagle, etc).
The SSP and Lone Eagle were available in a wide variety of calibers, from .22 Hornet and .223 up to behemoths like .444 Marlin, .358 Winchester, and .30-06. Caliber conversion kits were available, but since they consisted of a whole new barrel and breechblock, the kits cosy about 75% as much as a complete new gun. Production ran until about the year 2000, when Magnum Research discontinued the pistol for poor sales.
One interesting side note is that one of Foote’s subcontractors for SSP part manufacturing, a man named Stratiff, decided to produce his own imported version in 1988. Since nothing on the SSP was patented (the breech system was long since in the public domain), Straitiff build what was basically a copy of the SSP but with an automated cocking system integrated into the breechblock, so that the separate cocking lever was not needed. He marketed this as the “Competitor” pistol, and these can also be found today.

    I have one in 35 Remington. I ended up with it as the original owner never picked it back up after I did a trigger job on it. The Magnum Research example I have is crude and poorly finished. It does shoot quite well but as you can imagine, the recoil and muzzle blast is intense. It's a very clumsy thing to carry. It's rear heavy and that doesn't help the recoil at all. It will indeed hit you right in the eye with an ejected empty. I drag it out of the safe whenever anyone starts bragging about recoil not bothering them.

    As for out of battery fire.....the firing pin isn't lined up until it rotates completely closed. Also, the striker has to be manually cocked every time. The action itself is massive and very positive in it's opening and closing. It does inspire confidence when you are messing with it. There are, after all, artillery pieces using this system. It's very simple and reliable, albeit clumsy at this scale.

    Thanks for covering this interesting pistol. I couldn't find one I wanted back when I was looking for this type of pistol so I bought a Competitor CP-1. Huge mistake. The self-cocking "feature" made the gun nearly useless. It required a huge amount of force to open the firearm, relative to the amount of space available to grab that rear rotating section. The aftermath of every shot was like trying to open a stuck lid on a can of pickles. In addition, because all that effort was going into cocking the gun using a mechanism with next to no mechanical advantage (leverage), extraction efficacy was sacrificed. The Competitor came with a (weakly) spring-loaded extractor that, as often as not, failed to move the cartridge at all. The only way to get a Competitor to adequately extract was to snap it open hard and quick so that the spring-loaded extractor could hit the fired case suddenly. Unfortunately, the action was so hard to operate it tended to open slowly, causing the extractor to be slowly released, causing the extraction to fail. Nevertheless, I used it in silhouette competition. To overcome the problem cited above, I actually designed and built a wrench to fit the rear of the action. I used that to open it. Opening it by hand for a 40 round match would have left me with hands trembling so badly I'd be unable to shoot before I was half done. Other problems with the Competitor? Primer strikes were light and shooting surplus ammo in it was an exercise in "click, wait 30 seconds, open action, try again, repeat" over and over and over again. I don't know why they even chambered for 7.62x39 since the design could not consistently fire any of the ammo on the market at the time. About the only thing the Competitor had going for it was that you could get it in any chambering you wanted. If you wanted a 10" .257 Wby, it was right there in the catalog. .458 Lott? No problem. The list of chamberings was, iirc, 4 multi-column pages long and included dozens of wildcats I'd never before heard of. As for me, I consider the Competitor pistol to be a useful throwline sinker. The SSP-91 and the Lone Eagle, with their separate cocking levers, may look inelegant but they are a far better design than the Competitor. When CDNN sold off the last of the Lone Eagles for very low prices...well...I'm still kicking myself. They even had some of the rather rare accessories such as scope bases and iron sights. The only real problem with these pistols, no matter which iteration, is that they were extremely rear-weight-biased. All the heavy stuff was behind your shooting hand and extended a long way back. In a hard-kicking caliber, you had to remember to never line up the bore with your forearm. If you do, the gun will twist the muzzle so far skyward in recoil that the back of the action will solidly impact your forearm. This is definitely a two-handed design. Let the back of that gun recoil between two forearms and you may hyper-extend and injure your wrists but at least you won't get a goose egg that looks like someone hit you with a framing hammer on your forearm, just behind your thumb joint. Is there any need to ask me how I know this? Side note - The last time I saw an SSP-91 sold at auction it was at a small, semi-rural auction house in southeast Texas about 5 years ago. The pistol was chambered in .30-06 and was in decent shape. I wanted it and could have probably had it for $200-$300, given the way the bidding was going on the huge number of guns being sold that day. For some reason, though, the auctioneer decided to completely stop the flow of the auction and launch into a long speech about how incredibly powerful and special this pistol was. I saw people all over the room look up from their catalogs and start bidding solely based on his patter. It sold for, iirc, ~$1100, an idiotically high price. With that in mind, I ask that you please include this item in your after-action video where you report for how much the guns sell. In my opinion, this thing should go for pocket change. Given that it's been lumped into a lot with another much more interesting pistol, I'm guessing the auctioneers feel the same. But I'm still curious; weird things happen at auctions.

    It's mostly for flat high population density places, like the east coast and some parts of the midwest, by limiting to shotgun slugs and straight wall handgun rounds you don't get misses traveling miles like a rifle will. However, the laws aren't specific enough to name cartridge types, just kinds of guns

  • @Taeerom

    @Taeerom

    6 жыл бұрын

    Where i am it is (as far as I know) great restrictions on what kind of weapons you can hunt with, all with animal cruelty as justification. You can't hunt with bows or crossbows, pistols or underpowered guns (so, you can't hunt big game with a cartridge made for small game or fowl). Having suppressors and optics are encouraged due to higher likelyhood of getting a clean kill and safer shooting. Banning hunting with rifles, but not handguns just sounds so ass-backwards to my ears. The chances of getting wounding hits must be astronomical in comparison to using a proper rifle. And noone (bar sickos) wants to just wound the animal, rather than kill it.

  • @shyfox_69

    @shyfox_69

    6 жыл бұрын

    Taeerom We have caliber restrictions/minimums and all that too. The places that don't allow rifles are specifically because they are flat and have a decent population around, a rifle round will travel miles in the case of a miss, whereas a .44 magnum or shotgun slug, which are more than adequate for killing deer, will not travel nearly as far nor remain lethal for as long. Most of the US you can use anything you want that is deemed acceptable for whatever species you're going after, this is just places where rifles are more of a risk. The fact that this particular pistol can be used in those places is just vague laws not taking into account things like it (a pistol in a rifle round) existing. Also since when are bows/crossbows not lethal enough? Here we usually just have a minimum draw weight to insure it's powerful enough, a proper weight bow will kill anything in North America, including moose and grizzlies.

  • @DFX2KX

    a 75-lb bow (recurve or compound) is plenty good enough for boar, I know that much. And where I lived in Georgia had lots of little subdivisions of houses interspersed with the woods, so I can see the restrictions on rifles making some sense.

    @shyfox_69

    Yup. That's exactly how most places that bar rifles are. And yeah, any heavier draw (I think like 90lb and up, but don't quote me on that I'm not an archery guy) bow can take any north american game. Bows are really powerful, they worked great for a long ass time before guns came around

    Ian, I have personally owned 3 of these all made by Ordinance Tech. They may be ugly but MAN don't they shoot! Mine were in 357 maximum, 444 Marlin and 44 mag. I mounted Aimpoints on mine. We had a whole crowd of us here in Maine using these. Some in competition and also hunting.( I have a deer and a bear to my credit with the 44 mag version.) I also loaded down indoor range cast bullets for competition and small game hunting. We often drilled through the grip and installed a trigger stop screw to cut down on overtravel, and filled the hollow grip with bondo so a swivel could be added to the bottom of the grip. Add a barrel band and a sling and you can carry this easily. All in all a sweet shooting but clunky looking pistol! Great review!

    Rob Brown Very true, they were extremely accurate, 1/2 MOA was nothing for these things. My grandpa had one in 30-06 and 308, the 30-06 recoil was pretty much unbearable for more than 2 shots and the muzzle blast would rattle everything in a 500 ft radius BUT it would hit 1/4 MOA all day, the .308 was more gentle but didn't shoot as well, probably 1 MOA.

    Ian, I was told by Mac Quinn of MWG that it was his design as well as the “Ninety Rounder” 90 round magazine for the AR-15 and also one modified for the Mini-14. I first saw this when I worked at SGD, Southern Gun Distributors in Miami (Opa Locka) who was also the first US importer of the Glock. I also was the one who did a “Show & Tell” of the Glock with City of Miami PD at their training facility on NW 56th off the Palmetto Expressway. Massad Ayoob was teaching a Street Survival class and called to let me know to meet up.

    I remember seeing this pistol in a Gun Digest article from the mid-80's The gun in the article was chambered for .30-30. This pistol is responsible for sparking my interest in rifle calibered handguns. However I chose to go with the T/C Contender platform. The T/C offered a proven design, and could be easily reconfigured to a different caliber by merely changing a barrel. I eventually ended up with barrels chambered for .45-70, .35 Remington, .223, 10mm Auto and .45 Colt/.410. All of my barrels are 14" with the exception of the 10mm Auto which is 10". I still possess and use it to this day.

    I do own the SSP-91 7 MM BR REMMINGTON BY ORDINANCE TECH And believe me when I say this take a gun like this to a shooting range and you'll be the envy and the talk of the place for a long time . Now mine has the longer pistol grip which covers the cocking lever and pin so their is no way to accidentally snag the lever very accurate from 50 and 75 yards , it belonged to my father who has handed it down to me I've only shot it about 10 times to check the accuracy on it and my father was the original owner which he had only shot it 5 times .. still looks brand new very clean . Not sure if I'll keep it or not does anybody know what these guns go for also has p3x22 scope on it .anybody who thinks this gun is a joke or isn't worthy you couldn't be more wrong .awesome video Ian thank you.

    I was in a local gun shop when a guy brought one of these in to be looked at. He asked if there was a way that a forearm could be added under the barrel, he was an older gentleman that said he couldn't hold up the gun with one hand anymore but he also didn't want to just give up the gun, I felt sorry for him because I didn't see any way it could be done without doing something radical like welding parts under the barrel.

    Keep in mind, there is nothing to soak up any of the recoil from these guns. It's light, there is no stock, nor fore-grip, and everything that comes out the front end pushes the back into your wrist. Expect a really snappy response when you shoot it. (I had one in .270win, and it was great for varmit/silhouette, but took some getting used to. I can't imagine it in .358, and that's one of my favorite calibers)

Use to have one in 243 and it was a shooter as well but I traded it for the 223 that I have now because I wanted less recoil and cheaper to load for . Spare parts are no longer available so if something breaks you better hope your Gun Smith can make the part or you will have a paper weight. If you have one or ever get one never ever dry fire it unless the breach is in the open position or you will break the firing pin .

    Back in the 1980’s I was a bit into handgun silhouette competition and handgun hunting. In competition there was an unlimited category where if you were “well-heeled” you shot something like a Weatherby or a Wichita single shot pistol, if you weren’t so inclined you shot a Thompson-Center Contender or a Remington XP-100. As I remember the pistol as shown was pretty much middle of the pack as to cost. I got to shoot one in .308, and while it was snappy and loud, it wasn’t bad at all. If you shot commercial ammo, the fireball was pretty intense, however with a lot of burned powder. It was not nearly as comfortable as my XP-100 in 35 Remington. One benefit compared to the bolt action pistols was pretty straightforward reloading, as no gyrations were necessary to load the rounds (Remington and others didn’t make left handed actions) Funny thing, at the time the ATF rules said you couldn’t convert a bolt action rifle to a bolt action pistol. On the other hand you could design a bolt action pistol and make a rifle, hence Remington made the model 600 and 660 carbines which Jeff Cooper converted into the first modern Scout Rifles.

    This thing reminds me somewhat of this ludicrous single-shot pistol called the "Triple-Action Thunder". It's a similar action-- rotating breech, single-shot with a cocking lever-- but this thing's about 1.75x as big as the SSP-91, has a friggin' huge muzzle brake AND hydraulic recoil-killing system, and-- oh yeah, it's chambered in *.50BMG* / *12.7x99mm*.

    This gun was originally made in Etna Maine. I think the two men involved split ways. When I went to the very small business, the husband and wife were getting a divorce and she was working there by herself (1987-1988)? There was a huge pile of barrels on the bench (over 150) of different calibers and boxes of plastic frames and bins of little parts. She showed me how they worked and said they are all handmade. She opens the back door and shoots for test fires and said the one she didn't care for the most was .444 (it was a little uncomfortable for her size). The building is still there (metal Quonset hut) but the business is long gone.
