Can you imagine trying to play well at 6 AM, without enough sleep and maybe no charts available? They have to know all the tunes already, there was no rehearsal, and yet they are all totally professional and sound great! This is a tribute to some of the great musicians we see here, all of whom did session work to make a living and rarely got credit. Drummer Buddy Rogers is excellent. Beegie Adair is an excellent jazz pianist. Bobby Dyson, a very solid bassist, played on recordings for Waylon Jennings, Porter Wagoner, Dolly Parton, Jerry Reed, and many others. Guest Thumbs Carllile was a gifted guitarist who learned to play with the guitar laying flat, fingering notes and chords with his left hand from above, like a pianist.

Rest in Peace Ralph. He was a legend. I moved to Music City 42 years ago and my room mate would get up at 5 or 6 AM every morning and watch the TV show. That show was on from 1963 to 1992... amazing. I still remember how down home it was, extremely informal, just Ralph and the country music elite hanging out hours before any normal person is working. D.T.McCall, Carthage and Lafayette, we deliver...

Not many people know the extent of Ralph's career or how busy/hectic it happened to be. Ralph, on radio, hosted WSM's all-night show, "Opry Star Spotlight", which aired I from Midnight until 5am. Then he would go to the television studio and do "Opry Almanac". This Almanac show aired (1963-1966) and then he moved into afternoon television for three years (1966-1969) before returning to morning television with "The Ralph Emery Show" (1972-1991). He did the WSM all-night show for 15 years (1957-1972). He was an announcer at the Grand Ole Opry for three years, 1961-1964. In 1974 he began hosting his first national television show, "Pop! Goes the Country", and he stayed with that syndicated series until 1980. He began hosting/taping a daily, hour long syndicated radio show in which a different country artist joined him as a co-host each week. This radio series, which began in the mid 1970s ran until the mid 1980s...and by then he'd become a national face on cable television with "Nashville Now" (1983-1993). He was elected to several Halls of Fame. The Country Radio Hall of Fame; The Country Music Hall of Fame; and the National Radio Hall of Fame. His "Nashville Now" won many cable television awards. He was given a couple of nicknames: The Dick Clark of Country Music and The Johnny Carson of Cable Television.

3 months later I was born. So casual and off the cuff this program is. The humor and talent is undeniable. Miller was on top of the world during this time. I wish there were more of this type of show. Such a joy to watch.

I hear Ralph and Roger had stayed up all night drinking and then did the show. If true, they did a great job!

At one point in this interview Roger says he wrote a philosophy book. What ever happened to it? It's so upsetting there isn't more info out there about him. I would LOVE to read his philosophy.
