You are doing God’s work, friend. I’m glad that directors like Nolan have helped kept traditional film alive. I sense that Oppenheimer will help push this further into the mainstream.

It's super quality work. But I dont why they don't wear gloves while handling such sensitive imax film. They are handling with bare hands without gloves while joining the reels . But some time they are wearing gloves as it shown in this video. But first guy dint.

The unfortunate thing is that many filmmakers want to use film. The studios don’t allow it though.

@@NotMe-bk9oifirstly, I greatly appreciate that you said IMO. Imax dual laser certainly does look pretty darn brilliant. That’s very interesting that the sharpness was better in another cinema, perhaps it’s something to do with the kind of screen they are using? So much can go wrong with these screenings that it’s quite hard to tell these days.

As an old 35mm projectionist, and also as a fan visiting London in a couple of weeks mainly to experience my first 15/70 Imax screening, I was super happy to have this insight in the booth! And I am also happy to learn that the length of Nolan's movies has finally reached its physical limit! 😄

Phenomenal and beautiful editing on your production. I'm a former 35-mm IATSE union projectionist in the U.S. I come from the days of carbon-arc lamps and 15-minute reels. I left the business around 1983, when automation and platters were introduced and closed out my career in automated booths. Comparing this to what I've experienced, it's the difference between the Model T to an Airbus A380. I especially liked the zig-zag splicing technique to increase the contact surface. Pure genius thinking. I will be seeing "Oppenheimer" in 3 days but I believe our local IMAX house does not run print and, I assume, is digital IMAX. With projection what it is these days, I have a hard time imagining other than a highly-skilled technician putting together this amount of film and especially given the expense and the pristine treatment is must receive. Kudos to you and my booth brother in Kensington!

thats what makes the projection difference.. it would be amazing to see this version.. I managed to watch it in IMAX but it was digital and not the 70mm, but I also did watch the 70mm not imax, and the combo of both would be mindblowing... the IMAX sound is what makes it, but the 70mm is definitely something your eyes should experience.

@michaelrogers2080 After seeing "Oppenheimer" yesterday at the Chrysler IMAX Theatre, with a curved and distorted image, fuzzy focus, and truly horrible seating, I can verify that I will indeed be happier watching the film in the eventual Blu-Ray edition at home on my 65 inch screen with Dolby Atmos. Shame on IMAX for permitting the presentation of the film in the Chrysler venue.

Even tho I will only be able to see the regular 5 perf 70mm print, I am still really excited to see large format film being continued and hopefully having even more of a resurgence in the future! The theatre I will see it in is called Lichtburg (light castle) in Essen, Germany. It has a huge capacity seating over 1200 people and looks more like an opera house than a cinema with its 1930s styling and a huge balcony. It also has an actual stage and the biggest rolling screen in the whole of Europe. The stage originally was used for the orchestra back when silent films were still the norm. It was partially destroyed in WW2 and restored to its original appearance in the following years.

I saw Oppenheimer on film at the Esquire IMAX theater in Sacramento, CA. I did go up to the booth and watch them handling the film between screenings. I also saw the movie on digital IMAX in my home town theater in Reno, Nevada (Galaxy Luxury Sparks). Due to my broadcasting career, I have been a SMPTE member off and on over the years. I lived in Rochester, NY for nearly 13 years and got to rub shoulders with a lot of film people there (and really cool tours/demos in the Kodak Park laboratories). Two regular SMPTE meeting attendees were IMAX projectionists, and always had a pocket full of film frames to hand out to the curious. Today, 30 years later, several of my friends are film enthusiasts. One of them ran the Library of Congress media center for many years. Like many others here, I hope that filmmakers with vision continue to shoot and release on film when this is possible. Like many other old but serviceable technologies, it would not surprise me if film eventually makes enough of a comeback to be something folks can occasionally encounter in the world of the big screen.

I do not missing doing IMAX assembly... not that I ever messed it up but was always freaked out I would. There was another untrasonic weld version of doing the assembly as well using the zigzag method allowed you to later disassemble the print if needed which is why it is the preferred method these days. Granted last time I worked on IMAX was like 33 years ago!

Thats nice of the Ronson theatre to allow you to record and present the process. I will be watching that print on opening night at the Science Museum, and also seeing the film at the BFI IMAX the following week. I cannot wait! Dunkirk, Interstellar and Inception were fantastic in 70mm.

The closest 70mm IMAX theater by me is a good 7-8 hour drive. So, unfortunately I wont be seeing it anytime soon. HOWEVER, in a few weeks I'm traveling to Arizona to visit family, and I found out that there is one 70mm screen in Phoenix, which would be like an hour away from where I'm visiting. I'm gonna REALLY try to escape my family to go see this once in a lifetime viewing experience!

I love that they used the name "GADGET" to label the imax film boxes, which is the code name for the first nuclear bomb used in the trinity test

Watching Oppenheimer at AMC Metreon in SF, it's the biggest full ratio IMAX screen in the United States and it's a 70mm IMAX print screening at that. I'm seeing a 2:30PM showing with my girlfriend and watching Barbie at 7:30PM. Spending my whole day at the cinema and I'm super excited!

There are about 208 000 cinemas in the world, and only 30 of them will show this movie on 15/70mm.
