Ophir Pass on a Fully Loaded Big Old Bike?

After completing Engineer Pass on my GS Adventure, I continued Trans America Trail on Ophir Pass. Going up was no problem but going down was a little trickier with all the big rocks and spine-tingling exposure. If you're considering a big bike on the TAT, you might pick up some pointers from my experience on Ophir Pass. Regardless, it is a beautiful and worthy ride on any bike.
Enjoy and don't forget to subscribe and comment with any questions or experiences of your own.

3:33 “Nobody cares about your GoPro, Lee...just keep going.” Maybe one of the best sslf-advice tips ever on KZread. Second place is “it’s not that bad, just go slow”. I use that one a lot.

WOW, Just WOW!! Some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen. That valley looks like Paradise. I know that with the Go-Pro, its sometimes hard to actually see the incline of a road but seems to come through on your video. I can only dream of riding a trail like that and maybe one day, I will. Thanks for taking us along!

You're right...it is so beautiful up there and I'm glad I got some good footage...if you have good weather and just commit yourself to tackling it, I'm sure you'll be fine if you ever attempt these passes on your GS. Thanks again and I'll be glad to answer questions if you have them. ~Lee

Renee, so glad you enjoyed this video! You know, the day before this ride I was on Marshall Pass fiddling with my drone and I dropped two micro SD cards and lost 10 days of gopro footage...can you believe that? A few days later on Glacier Lake a young man who was hiking the Pacific Crest Trail told me, just go ride those sections again...it's only 10 days. LOL...anyway, thanks for watching, the kind words... and I hope you get a chance to watch the others.

Thank you very much for this great insight of the track! Great drone shots - i love them 👍🏻 Those big rocks aren't easy to ride on with a big bike. It helps me a lot to see in advance what road situation we have to struggle with. We're traveling your country in June... and of course snow may still be a problem and not all roads will be passable at that time. Greetings from Germany, Karim

Nice video. We did Ophir in late August. We took it the same direction as you. I felt very sorry for the many bikes loaded up that attempted it in the other direction. A great many were stuck in the baby heads trying to go up to the summit.

Great video. Sure would be nice if someone would come up with a method of showing how steep a hill actually is. Coming off the pass through the baby head section to the switchback it looks flat when its almost a 30 degree slope. 2019 I did Ophir on a loaded 1190 the same direction as you. Then 2020 did it the opposite way on the same bike.

Thanks! I have to confess that I needed some help getting started on the section after the switchback about 20 yds from the summit. Made the mistake of taking the inside line. I know better that the outside line is usually smoother, but just couldn't take it. LOL.

In this video the author is traveling North to South across Ophir Pass. If you are riding a fully loaded big bike I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND traveling North to South over Ophir Pass. We unfortunately didn't know this and began the CO BDR from the south. Ophir Pass was a reality check for me and I realized I was way over packed and heavy to be climbing it fully loaded to camp off the bike. Lesson learned the hard way with several drops of the bikes. The most absolutely gorgeous and stunning views that these eyes have ever beheld. I'll do it again, but on a proper hard-enduro bike so the enjoyment factor is far greater than the work factor. Beautiful video @Lee Kandlbinder. I'd never heard of the term "Baby Heads" but that is a perfect description as they put me on my ass several times. We just got back home this weekend and heard they had shut down portions of Ophir Pass a couple days after we went through it due to excessive rain fall making the trails unsafe for passage. Stay safe.
