This is seriously one of their best live performances on YT imo and I've seen em aaaalllll😂 This song is off My Arms, Your Hearse, their 3rd album and what's considered as the beginning of their golden age (this through Watershed). Martin fuckin Mendez! Slaying the bass here and forevermore!

I wouldn't say there golden age has ended yet, but I would agree that it began with My Arms, Your Hearse. Not to dismiss the first two albums, they're also fine albums, but on MAYH I think they really found their style. Which is difficult to say given the constant stylistic expansion and exploration. But the first two were still more of a search, maybe the second even more so than the first. While on MAYH it really all came together. There Mikael was much more confident with his clean vocals then on the first two. Also, the song structures are more balanced and the transitions work better.

I was there in the front row! Wearing a white Rush t-shirt and long black hair. It was an unbelievable show. I was only 18 and faked a sick note to leave college so I could queue early :) 13 years on, I'm still a massive Opeth fan. Love them dearly and I loved this reaction. I don't think any youtubers have reacted to 'When', let alone the live version. Thank you:)

Kudos for some bass love! In a band of amazing musicians, Martin Mendez is (I think) the unsung hero of Opeth. He kills it every single time 🔥

If u say that to Mikael he will rage out and say he is just a normal musician and that there are better musicians than him. Which is another reason he deserves the God status.

For me Metal peaked with Opeth and Meshuggah. Revolutionary in their prime! and the guts to play such style live - no words.

They are not what they used to be. My Arms, Your Hearse was my introduction, and in particular THIS track. After Ghosts Of Perdition the band when in a different direction...more towards Akerfeldt's furtive love of prog rock. Still, in their prime, one of the best bands I've ever heard...on a very short list.

They’re still an awesome band, also watershed wasn’t really that much of a different direction, still has harsh vocals and heavy stuff on there. Ya they aren’t at their peak but they’re still a great band and they still sound amazing live.

Am not sure if the channel reads comments or anything. But it would mean a lot if you can have the lyrics of such songs in front of you as well to not miss out on the subtleties of emotion that go against the riffs majority of the times. Especially with opeth. Cheers
