Opeth performing I Feel The Dark, live at Enmore Theatre in Sydney on 16 December 2011
Opeth is a progressive metal band from Sweden that is influenced by many diverse musical styles ranging from jazz, 1970s progressive rock, death metal, and blues. Their recent releases have deviated from their traditional death metal influenced style, with more emphasis on progressive elements. Vocalist Mikael Åkerfeldt is also noted for utilizing both clean singing and death growls, often in the same track. Due to their unique blend of melodic and progressive elements, Opeth are often classified separately from more typical death metal acts. The name Opeth was taken from Wilbur Smith's novel Sunbird and derived from Opet, a city of the moon named in the novel.
Opeth was formed in Stockholm, Södermanland, Sweden in 1990 by David Isberg. Isberg invited Mikael Åkerfeldt to join the band at a practice session as a bass player, but failed to inform the current bass player or any of the other members of the band. Because of this, all band members except for Isberg quit, and Åkerfeldt soon joined Opeth after his band, Eruption, faltered. With Åkerfeldt on guitar and David Isberg on vocals, Opeth still lacked members and needing more, they were soon joined by long-time friend of Åkerfeldt and former Eruption drummer Anders Nordin and Nick Döring on bass. Andreas Dimeo was recruited as a second guitarist.

People who hate albums like Heritage or Damnation don't deserve to call themselves Opeth fans. It might be different, but it's still Opeth. Mikael said once in an interview that he dislikes one thing about metalheads: that they're not really open-minded when it comes to music. Sadly, I must agree with him, most metalheads don't want anything to change and they just want all of their favourite bands sound the same all the time. Anyways, great performance.

I mean I'm still an Opeth fan regardless of whether I love Heritage or anything after. Damnation isn't metal but I love it. Heritage had some great songs like this, but just because I don't like say in cauda venenum doesn't mean I'm not an "opeth fan." i just don't like that style.

In this 10 year old comment he created this false equivalency between Damnation and heritage or the reset of their mellow prog rock albums. Damnation was great, everything after is subjectively a lot less so. mise@@raas96

How about we try to clarify this for you. Since we became a KZread partner channel and started uploading all the shows we have filmed from our website to KZread in HD, KZread automatically blocks any shows that have been ripped from our website and uploaded that are lower quality duplicates of the ones we have on KZread. We've gone out of our way to ensure KZread does not record a strike against those users who rip our website videos, but just blocks lower quality ripped duplicates. Cheers.

Just try to think that people who hear that kind of trash have no quality standards regarding music. And it's ok, I mean, people like that don't really understand anything about music, they just listen to whatever they're exposed to.

I prefer it when bands don't get too viral. They have more control over their music and are less likely to sellout. I don't need to see every other fucker on the street wearing an Opeth shirt or have at least one or two albums in their collection. Bands like this have been my own special retreat away from all this pop culture nonsense. They can have their Beiber as well as their Metallica, AC/DC, and Slipknot.

YOOOO WTF. My coworker found out I liked Tool and Floyd a lot, listen to them daily and he said. If you like them, try Opeth. I wasn't prepared for this band... Jesus Christ. Been listening to Heritage non-stop. I must admit, I am not typically into DEATH METAL guttural screams, but if they have any other albums "heritage-like", let me know. They are just... holy fucking shit. I heard ALL of Heritage and rated it as one of the very best albums I have ever heard in my life. Thank you for existing OPETH, and please... make yourselves known to someone like me sooner. This is too much.

I also listened to Windowpane, Universal Truth and Harvest, and FUCKING STRANGE BREW. LOL. I'm sorry if I am being annoying, I am just overwhelmed by these guys. It's like.. I wanna show everyone I know them, and want them to react how I am right now. Rofl..

I would definitely recommend Pale Communion, Sorceress and Cauda Venenum albums. No growls, and very proggy. But I would also give their older work a try, I think Opeth has done more than any other band to break people into growls. I hated them at first, but the music kept me coming. Now I love it (with them and certain bands), so things can change for you if you remain open minded. That being said, even in their older tracks they usually have one or two tracks on the album that are clean (To bid you farewell, credence, benighted, face of melinda just to name a few.

@@soakedbearrd Wanna know something funny? Since my Opeth journey began, I've made strides to listen to some of their other albums, and now some of my favorite songs of theirs have growls. It's strange, but I agree. They broke me into the growls and now they're absolutely one of my favorite bands ever. Can't think of an album that I don't like. Even listened to some of their early albums. Thanks for the suggestion though. I'm happy that I pushed myself to give the growls another chance.

@@ssjonupants haha yeah Opeth does it all the time. I think it’s the beauty and the beast dynamic. You fall in love with beauty, and are afraid of the beast until you realize the beast is just part of the beauty. I own all their albums and each has something special. Even my two worst albums (orchid and heritage) is better than some bands worst albums.

Because Moshcam is pure crap that puts in danger the accounts of others with your copyright. Many friends have lost their accounts for using one video without knowing, many of them were private videos or even they've upload them before Moshcam did it. Writing to the user asking him to delete the video would've been enough, it wasn't necesary to put their account in danger of dissapearing with one strike more.

I don't like how, since Watershed, Mikael tries to sound like some 70s rockstar like Robert Plant who sings about the hard life on the road and other cheesy shit like that. What's with these new vocal melodies and the way he does those little falsetto things at the end of the lines? It doesn't sound honest and it doesn't suit your voice, just sing like on Damnation. I also really hate the way Axenrot plays. "I'm in Opeth now so I have to play with emotion, which means ghost notes on the snare drum, tons and tons of ghost notes". Less is more, it's just annoying how he has to do some kind of add-on on the drums every other second.
