Opeth performing Folklore, live at Enmore Theatre in Sydney on 16 December 2011
Opeth is a progressive metal band from Sweden that is influenced by many diverse musical styles ranging from jazz, 1970s progressive rock, death metal, and blues. Their recent releases have deviated from their traditional death metal influenced style, with more emphasis on progressive elements. Vocalist Mikael Åkerfeldt is also noted for utilizing both clean singing and death growls, often in the same track. Due to their unique blend of melodic and progressive elements, Opeth are often classified separately from more typical death metal acts. The name Opeth was taken from Wilbur Smith's novel Sunbird and derived from Opet, a city of the moon named in the novel.
Opeth was formed in Stockholm, Södermanland, Sweden in 1990 by David Isberg. Isberg invited Mikael Åkerfeldt to join the band at a practice session as a bass player, but failed to inform the current bass player or any of the other members of the band. Because of this, all band members except for Isberg quit, and Åkerfeldt soon joined Opeth after his band, Eruption, faltered. With Åkerfeldt on guitar and David Isberg on vocals, Opeth still lacked members and needing more, they were soon joined by long-time friend of Åkerfeldt and former Eruption drummer Anders Nordin and Nick Döring on bass. Andreas Dimeo was recruited as a second guitarist.

I get why some death metal guys don’t necessarily enjoy stuff from Heritage and the albums that follow. But me, I say screw ‘em it’s their loss, I love almost anything that Opeth does!
the acoustic part has a nice Still Life touch to it, love it
I am not an Opeth fan. Not at all! But this song, man! Second half I can listen until the end of time! Thank you Opeth!

Best song on Heritage
this is our folklore metal song ...brilliant
5:05 the bass part gave me chills lol sounds so fuckin evil! It’s like Mikael has said , add distortion hear and there add some growls and its the same shit theyve always played lol
Such a beautiful song. I love the jazzy, epic adventure of Heritage. I love every album so much. I could never dislike an album from them, let alone “hate” one. Opeth is the best in the world
I love how they extended the best part of this song
This is one of my favourite Opeth's songs. Metal folklore yeah!
wow... Fredrik åkesson might have been the best thing to happen to opeth in a long time :)
Opeth é tão perfeito.
A beautiful song put down by an incredible band. Thank you Opeth!
4:55 perfect build up for the climax!
Fredrik soloing out of this world at the end!
This song is so ducking great! Thanks +Moshcam for bringing this lmL
I really feel like Fredrik's solos have gotten a lot better in Opeth. I thought most of his solos on Watershed weren't very good, but he KILLED it on Heritage. They fit the mood a whole lot better.
@ScottBradyz

Axe kills it on this album as well. I feel like he's doing his own thing, whereas on Watershed he was attempting to mimic Martin Lopez.
@mattman1127

Scott Brady I don't know about all that lol. Never heard Martin Lopez do anything as obnoxious as the second chorus in Porcelain Heart, or the blasts/ridiculous tom rolls in the Lotus Eater. Both are great though. Really it's all up to what Mikael writes and I think everyone else just follows along.
@steliosp1770

gotta disagree. he's always been a great guitarist and specifically soloist.. but yeah you can see his style progress as opeth put out albums.. gotta say tho..i dont get how someone can say anything bad about heritage solos when there are insane solos like those in burden - and not only that anyways.
@mattman1127

Scott Brady I wrote that last comment having never listened to Deliverance or Damnation. I'm a Lopez believer now, sad to see him go, but Axe isn't a downgrade by any means.

This song is amazing. The whole album hit me right in the feels when they released it. It was an odd feeling waiting for the roars that never came, but the feeling was still the same. Ghost Reveries, Heritage and In Cauda is my three favorite opeth albums. It think my least favorite is sorceress to be honest. To strange Brew is an amazing song!

Is it only me or does the live version sound as good as the studio version if not better. Love it. Sadly not many bands you can say that about. The art of playing LIVE is dying.
