On my 18th birthday I got to see Opeth live. The show was sold out and my Mom went to the venue during sound check earlier in the day and tried to get my albums signed. Martin Mendez and Peter Lindgren asked if we were coming to the show and obviously we weren't because it was sold out. Later that day my Mom blows me away with the best news. They put us on the guest list. I was at the show and Opeth gave me the best gift to commemorate my transition into adulthood. It was incredible. During the show, they were about to play the last song of the set and there was a moment of complete silence between the songs and I screamed out 'Demon Of The Fall', to which the crowd gave a thunderous bellow of approval. They played the last song and stepped off stage for a few minutes. The crowd, without any rest cried out for an encore. The crowd was beginning to show signs of fatigue when finally they came back on stage. Low and behold; my night was complete as they finished the show with 'Demon Of The Fall'. After that, I spent over an hour on their tour bus talking with Peter and Martin. It was a perfect birthday. That was 17 years ago.

Silent dance with death. Everything is lost. Torn by the arrival of Autumn. The blink of an eye, you know it's me You keep the dagger close at hand. And you saw nothing. False love turned to pure hate. The wind cried a lamentation before merging with the grey. Demon of the fall. Gasping for another breath. She rose, screaming at closed doors. Seductive faint mist forging through the cracks in the wall. I shant resist. In tears for all of eternity. She turned around and faced me for the first time. Run away, run away. Just one second, and I was left with nothing. Her fragrance still pulsating through damp air. That day came to an end. And she had lost in me, her CREDENCE.

@@XTyrannicalX oh, they're great albums for sure, but outside of a few tracks, they don't hit as hard for me as Blackwater Park-Watershed. To be fair, that has more to do with the mixing than the music itself, they're still good albums and I prefer them to any of the post-Heritage stuff, with the possible exception of Sorceress. In 2007, the first time I ever saw Opeth live here in Perth, Australia, the power for the lights in the venue went out for a good 10 minutes just before the encore which was this song - Mikael and co were on stage with working amps and shit, they asked, should we continue anyway? We all screamed YEAH!!! They did! They played *Demon of the Fall* in complete darkness!!! It was so good!!!! 0:39 - that is backwards, so reverse that into and it is a live version of this song's intro!

Haha I think Dylan was expecting some blasting riff again after that acoustic outro. It continues to the intro of Credence, another good track by opeth

This was the first opeth album I ever heard. I remember getting done with band practice (bass in a metal band) and thinking, there's no reason to play anymore, this everything I've ever wanted to hear and I didn't even know I wanted it.

my fav track of this LP (along with "april ethereal" and "karma" ) / how about trying the "other side" of Opeth with songs like "burden" or "isolation years" ( Mikael sounds just like Roland Orzabal of Tears For Fears on the chorus ) , beautiful melodies have no secrets either for these guys

When I heard 'mosh pit hug', I pictured a wall of death but running at the person at the other end to hug rather than to mosh.

For the angelic side of Mikael’s voice, check out “Benighted” off their 1999 masterpiece album, Still Life (my favorite Opeth album). His voice in this song is silky smooth.

If you have played or written music you can tell where things are going to go even with the musical geniuses that are tool you can learn their tendencies, opeth write in such a way that multiple directions would work equally that is the genius. The calibre of composition is astounding to the extent of being unpredictable no matter if you have a strong understanding of music, that is why many musicians love them, they can surprise even those who have studied songwriting.

This was so good. Now it's time for Porcupine Tree. Time flies live will blow you away. I also think the time is ripe for Steven Wilson. Try Luminol live in Mexico 😉
