    Could you please add black space at the end for the recommended videos? They obscure the last part of the mushroom cloud.

    Fantastic as always ATC. The 2nd view, where you can really see the fireball...wow!

    This looks very similar to the atomic cannon explosion, is it the same one?

    They use those clouds and the smoke lines to measure the speed and effects of the shockwave.

    Watch the official Upshot-Knothole video. The white smoke is oil fog and the black smoke is carbon soot. They were testing these materials (fogs or smoke dispersion) to see if it would absorb some of the thermal effects from the blast. It worked, but the tests were difficult because the breeze dispersed a lot of the smoke before the shot was fired. They ran this same test on several shots in this series.

    What was all the smoke and dust near ground zero prior to detonation? Was that for blast analysis?

  • @jasonburdette9921

    @jasonburdette9921

    They used white and black smoke as a test to see if the light from the blast would deflect or absorb the heat. The rocket you see that are launched seconds before the blast. That is what they used as a grid to measure the width of the blast.

    All that data has long been transcribed directly to a digital database, useful for running simulations on supercomputers, which is how designs for hardware are calculated.
