This video is top notch. Not only is the information presented in a very professional manner, but its technical quality is superb. In particular, the audio is much better than most KZread videos. One thing I learned is that Bletchley Park was up and running during this battle. I didn't know that they had broken the German Naval Enigma that early. I'm gonna have to check on this assertion to see if it is really true. Edit: I checked on it, and Gordon Welch and Alan Turing had already advanced Bletchley Park into code breaking the German Navy Enigma code. There is a KZread video called Bletchley Park by Ian Beckett that explains the chronology.

Maybe their anti-aircraft protection? Actually I'm convinced Lutjens was the Bismarck's greatest weakness. I read many years ago that he gave his watch to his son before the operation and told him he wouldn't survive. He could've sunk POW and then returned back to Norway back thru the Denmark Strait imo. Heading to France meant fighting all the Brit ships heading north and then get bottled up and bombed in a French port? If Captain Lindemann had control then the Bismarck could've survived!

@@donaldshotts4429 Lütjens did what he could with the impossible mission he was given, Bismarck could not have sunk POW as at that point Bismarck was damaged with reduced speed and fuel, wasting your fuel to try and sink a Battleship that already to far, is not kinda not the best idea. You see he kinda can't go back to Norway, by this point Lütjens had practically known that German intelligence is not very reliable, at the start of Operation Rheinübung, the German intelligence had told Lütjens that he shouldn't encounter HMS Hood or any King George V-class battleship, and we all know where that ended. So in Lütjens's eyes, POW could be leading him into a much more heavier force, so he's not looping back to Norway, he's not taking his chances goin back to Norway with the chance of encountering more British ships. France was the only choice, going to Norway is like going straight to the storm as British forces will be between him and Norway. A very useful illustration of events. Whatever one may think of the Bismark's intentions in sinking merchant vessels, one overriding rule among sailors is that you never leave a living soul adrift at the mercy of the sea. The cruiser Dorsetshire and destroyer Maori would have remained longer to rescue Bismark's survivors had lookouts not reported the possible sighting of a U-boat. Sailors on the British ships were seen frantically casting bouyancy aids to the Germans as the our ships began to steam away. One can only imagine the terror and anguish those young men felt at being left to their fate...

The Swordfish planes were obsolete, yes, but their obsolescence actually helped them sink the Bismarck due to their slow speed and wave top flight. The AA for the Bismarck actually wasn’t able to depress low enough for the planes and their speed made them hard to track. (The history visualized guy actually goes into great depth on this subject)

really excellent video. How accurate are the ship movements such as the close up of the final engagement? Would love to see a similar video done about the Battle of Surigao Strait at Leyte Gulf when Admiral Oldendorf’s battleship task force engaged IJN Admiral Nishimuro’s Southern Force and the last time a battleship formation “capped the T”. Thanks for the video 👍🏻

Bruh its British fault that they sent pride of the fleet that was half wooden to fight Bismarck. Its not their fault Hood was so outdated it only took 1 shell for it to blow up. Thats British fault for sending such outdated ship on suicide mission

@@imma5761Unfortunately, war is rarely convenient. Although HMS Hood was in need of a long overdue overhaul, it was one of the few capital ships the Royal Navy had available that could match the speed of Germany's battleships. The others were 2 King George the 5th class battleships and 1 Renown class battlecruiser, beside aircraft carriers, in the Home Fleet. That was it!!

I've always been baffled by one question: since Bismarck was only a few hundred miles away from the French coast, why didn't the Luftwaffe rescue her? I mean the range of a bomb/torpedo-loaded Fw190 is 800 km/500 mi, which should be enough for such mission.

  • @peterson7082

They didn't have the range with that combat load. Not to mention other British ships and British aircraft could have very well countered their support.

@@BasementEngineer It's in many books on the topic. Now and then someone on the German side suspected that perhaps their code(s) had been broken but they always expressed confidence that the codes were unbreakable. You can start with what was perhaps the first book on the topic "Bodyguard of Lies" and move on from there to any of many, many books on the topic.
