Operation of a John Deere 290 two row corn planter. Some help I hope

How to operate a Old John Deere 290 two row planter. The operators book is vague. So I hope this is helpful to you. One plate we used on some of the newer smaller sweet corn was H1268-B or B4. Comment below if you like as to what planter plate you are using with which seed. Thanks

Very helpful. I'm thinking about buying one locally, and this helped me understand the operation. Thanks!

I did learn something. Thanks much. I got a 290 last year. Note just to find plates for my pumpkins and sunflowers.

That AC WD looks good hook to your JD 290! I have tighter space so I pulled mine with my Ferguson TO35 (I have an AC WD too). I planted popcorn with B6-24 "small flat corn" and it worked perfect while using Reids Yellow Dent on B7-24 "medium flat corn" works better. Planning later to get 'medium round' for the Blue Hopi and 'large flat' for Hickory King plus sorghum and soybean plates. The JD 290 manual only lists the cast iron seed plate numbers and I have yet to find the Lustran plastic plate cross reference chart to find used plastic plates. Lincoln Ag sells new Lustran plates.

This was helpful! We’re thinking about buying one. This will be an upgrade from our John Deere 2 row where someone has to sit on the back of it and another person has to drive the tractor😂. I may have missed it in the video but how does the planter raise up and down?

It has a mechanical lift. It is worn and doesn’t work great. There is a lever with a rope you pull on that activates the mechanical lift or lowers it

The rope runs from the mechanical lift lever to the tractor. Some of the planters were converted to hydraulic lift with a hydraulic cylinder

I'm looking at one of those now, I need to know what all to check before I decide to buy this thing. Any pointers for that?

Make sure you try the mechanical lift to see if it works. You could check and see if the gearbox works. Also check to see if it has plantar plate with it or not. Are the seed cans rusted out?You should be able to have somebody pull it a little bit and see if it works it’s OK to drag the planner and just see if it’s moving like it should the parts that is
