On this episode I will take you through using a 75 year old John Deere 290, 2 row planter as I plant a corn food plot with it. I use my ATV to pull the planter with.

Yep, thanks man. We are not like some channels that only glamorize the good stuff! The good, the bad and the ugly of keeping it real! Have a good weekend man, thanks.

Awesome--This one is a classic. You have come a long way since this video was made. You have obviously learned a lot and have made the changes and adapted to doing things much better and smarter. The equipment you have to use has also improved and evolved. Only the varmints (and the problems they cause) seem to remain the same!! Onward and upward my friend.

I have had the same model planter now for 2 years. Finally got it in working order to plant corn for food plots this year. Our lift and drop mechanism doesn't work and can't find the parts so we have to manually lift it when not planting. We also took off the front drive gearbox because a gear inside broke as well as a the pinion gear for the differential. Ended up welding a straight bar in it's place so it is a fixed differential now and works great, just have to go slow around corners or the chains bind. As you mentioned, we're afraid of it failing to drop corn randomly so we took a boat seat and mounted it on the back of the planter. Now someone sits on it and observes the seed falling in every couple of seconds to ensure there are no problems.

wow, that's alot of messing around! yeah I've broke many chains and pins. I have also found out that SLOW is key and I don't go in reverse any more. even with the planter up the chains bind and sometimes come off in reverse. but since I've done that it's been ok so far.

Cool! No, it has been awhile so I don't recall the mechanisms, but best of luck! They work pretty well considering how old they are!

@Kapper Outdoors yep! The old time farmers use to plant all day long with these old machines. Amazing how much they've changed.

Hurts when you see the seed has been robbed. That must be why they wear masks.

Your soil looks perfect ! Nothing wrong with the old stuff you just need lots of patience.I remember my Great Grandfather spending more time fixing then actually farming. One time the bailer wasn't working properly so I had to walk behind the bailer with a pitch fork throwing the hay back into the next row . Imagine all the exercise I got ? Good thing I was only 11 years old ! Can't wait to see the corn come up. Check out my vid I made a last year if you want .kzread.info/dash/bejne/qn-cpJKMirGqYcY.html

Yeah, them were the old days for many for sure!! I just replanted my big corn plot yesterday due to raccoons, crows, and turkeys completely easting it up in the rows! My hope this time is that since its going to be hot and supposed to rain, that they will come up much quicker this time.... I'll check out your vid man, thanks.

This is just a suggestion . Try putting some loose seed out for the critters . Maybe they won't go through the work of digging your planted seed up ? I've seen others do this on KZread. Mark
