Operating in a Shutdown - 886 Restaurant

Ойын-сауық

How should a business function during a crisis? Eric Sze and Andy Chuang, owners of 886, a popular Taiwanese restaurant in New York city, chose to put all their efforts toward helping their employees and feeding their community. When NYC restaurants were ordered to close their doors, Eric and Andy took to their kitchen and started making bento boxes to donate to emergency workers throughout the city. Their two-person operation is continuing to cook, with all proceeds going directly back to their staff, many of whom are undocumented.

Shit we started doing so good we’re selling 2x more food than usual, we’re donating food to our local hospitals now 🙏🏽 but we should also bring awareness to homeless people and all those who lost their job and won’t be able to eat. The difference between a boss who just manages staff and a boss who knows the Ins and Outs and can run the place by himself, and a partner - just slower. Clearly he appreciates what the team does when he says " the dishwasher needs a raise." 💓

I work at a small local pizza restaurant and this situation has been so strange. My hours were cut from 40 to 26. During the day I might make literally 10 pizzas or less. At night when people are more likely to order takeout I might make 90-100 pizzas and we get slammed from 4 pm to close. We actually had to hire a new delivery driver because one on night shifts wasn’t enough. Every day there is a new change. Restaurants are always in some sort of state of flux though. Its also quite strange working with drastically reduced staff and no customers inside the restaurant.

It is time like these we need to band and help each other around us. Personally, I am the lucky ones, although my gourmet meat business lost 90% of all Restaurant orders, but thankfully I had online meat business direct to customers and that just exploded. At least I can pay my employees full wages for now while cutting my own until we have extra cash. There are also many restaurants doing the same as Eric and Andy here in Jakarta. Good to know and I wish for the best for 886 and everyone in NYC!
