ALLOW ME TO EXPLAIN Touhou Project (pronounced as “Tō - hō”) is one of the biggest doujin series of all time in Japan. The main series is developed by Shanghai Alice, which is technically a company but it’s basically run by just a single guy. The guy who programs, writes music for, and makes the designs for the characters goes by the name “ZUN”, but his real name is public as well, being Jun’ya Ōta. This franchise is infamous for many things, having a big community in Japan and a community in the West too, albeit a niche one. I would say that the most important things that define the Touhou franchise would be the characters, music, and gameplay, with lore being an aspect that many people are also engrossed with. But besides the unique character designs that come with every entry and the unique music that accompanies each and every game in the franchise, one of the most important things that kept this game alive is the community. A special thing about Touhou is that ZUN is extremely lenient when it comes to his copyright control over the series, as long as you follow his basic rules. Quite literally anybody is allowed to use the Touhou IP for whatever fan content that they wish to make, which has led to the creation of fan remixes, fan art, fan animation, fan games, fan merchandise, all of these unique interpretations of Touhou by the fans has led to it’s rapid growth across the internet. It has gotten to the point where many Touhou-related fanworks become viral without anybody outside the community knowing what Touhou even is. Touhou is basically the most popular niche franchise to ever exist. The mainline series is split into two eras. The PC-98 era, which consists of Touhou 01 - Touhou 05, and the Windows era, which began with Touhou 06 and continues all the way to today. Touhou 06 acts as a reboot of the series story and gameplay wise, since the jump from the PC-98 to Windows allowed for better visuals and a clearer and more diverse soundscape. In terms of canonicity, ZUN himself said that PC-98 is canon to Windows unless if Windows contradicts something in PC-98. The music and fan-renditions of the music is one of THE best parts of the Touhou franchise. The melodies ZUN comes up with and the way he layers his sounds is so unique. ZUN is well-known for using his instruments in ways that’d be impossible to perform in real life, and for a lot of traditional music artists that is going to be something that’ll be hard to get used to. The details hidden within a song aren’t usually something people pick up on in a first listen, so it’ll take you multiple listens of the same song in order to fully appreciate everything that’s going on. Trust me, you’ll never get bored with Touhou music. All of the games have their own unique feel to them and you’re probably going to develop your own unique list of favorites. I love this franchise so much. I really love what you do with the channel. I hope I’ll get to see tons more Touhou from you Marco!

The trumpets in Touhou music are lovely, they convey so much emotion If someone plays this game for the first time (barely any backstory required), they will go into this stage without any idea what is going on. All they know is that this "Shining Needle Castle Sinking in the Air" is where they will fight a final boss who is causing a revolution for the weak against the strong . . Basically, this song has a theme of "flipping things upside down", which you might pick up on with the sound effects. This "revolution" mentioned above and the boss of this stage also have this theme of "flipping things upside down" Even the Shining Needle Castle is flipped upside down, that is why it is "sinking in the air"

As I see other commenters mentioning, the story told through the dialogue is somewhat light-hearted, it's high stakes for the main characters but still humor everywhere. The backstories (that don't really show in the games) are very dark, but that doesn't really matter to a player. The player would read the manga and character profiles if they wanted to know the character lore . . In this sense, the music is really what sets the tone

Touhou is a bullet hell shoot-em-up that has been getting constant games almost every year since the late 90s, and has a pretty large fanbase mostly due to the wide amount of different characters present throughout the series, as well as the consistently unique and good music. Most of the games are developed completely solo, including the music, by a man called ZUN, and the series draws a lot of influence from different Japanese mythology and folklore.

Hey Marco, since you seem to be interested in the composer intentons with each particular piece, I will leave here ZUNs comments on this song (He always writes a small commentary for each song in the music gallery) "The stage 5 theme. I made it a song with a heartrending feeling, without any big meaning. It has a sorrowful melody, but a light-hearted rhythm. I feel like when this sort of song starts playing, you've entered the final part of the game." Nothing to deep, but it is known that ZUN is under the influence of alcohol most of the time. PS: I made a small change from the translation on the wiki since I felt it was a little off.

And yes, you've been saying Touhou right! I hope you check out more tracks from the series, there's lots of good ones! Oh and if you want context, yes there's emotional stakes! The primary antagonist of this particular game is Shinmyoumaru Sukuna, who is trying to stage a rebellion against all the strong youkai/spirits/mages on the behalf of the weaker ones. So to her, this is EXTREMELY important.

I think Touhou can be seen as a collection of short stories, each game centers on a particular Incident and the characters' responses to it. It's often lighthearted, so I can't remember if there are any actually-evil characters, and the antagonists are usually forgiven after being beaten up and having their plans foiled.

Not to mention she likely would have been unsuccessful in her actual goal of killing Chang'e for a few reasons, namely that Chang'e is a Hourai, the watatsuki sisters would have had to eventually step in, and Sagume's power. The stakes for the lunarians were *mostly* low, they just would have needed to evacuate like they did. The actual stakes were for Gensokyo, which would have been leveled in an instant.

In this game objects came to life and rebels againsts their owners. The weak youkai wants to start a rebellion. The protagonists go find out what's happening. They eventually find themself in an inverted castle (the ost is playing during the stage) where they find Seija. She can turn anything upside down and she wanted to start this rebellion. The object came through life with the help of the miracle mallet used by the inchling Sukuna Shinmiomaru. She used the mallet to become big. It is much more complicated than that, diving into eastern mythology (as Zun the creator always do) but I am not an expert on touhou lore

As someone who has been playing Touhou since Touhou 6, before Touhou 6: Embodiment of Scarlet Devil it was JP only for the PC-98, there's no major "story line". Each game is fairly self contained and can be summed up for the most part as "Human Miko Reimu Hakurei and her Human Magician friend Marisa Kirisame notice something odd and go investigate. The incident is caused by Youkai/Demons, the pair beat them up, then they become friends". Continue this loop for 30 games or so. Very rarely are the stakes super "high" but for Touhou 14: Double Dealing Character which this is from, Gensokyo (World of Touhou) got turned on its head. The weak Youkai started to become powerful, beings that usually take a long time to appear (tsukumogami) are showing up all over the play, and the Heroines weapons are gaining a will of their own and so they go to investigate. What they find is an Upside Down Castle in the sky (Shining Needle Castle) and this is the Penultimate stage where this theme plays on their way to find the mastermind behind the person causing the chaos.

The Touhou Series/Touhou Project (you pronounced it correctly) is a series of top down "bullet hell shooter" games made entirely by 1 person, ZUN, whose gameplay revolves around dodging and shooting your way through increasingly complex volleys/patterns of bullets. The games are comprised of 6 stages and 6 boss fights (along with 1 extra stage and boss aside from the main game) and generally have 1 boss per stage at the end of the stage and 1 miniboss in the middle (which can also be the stage boss). Each game's story focuses on a singular incident that is disrupting the peace of the setting of the games, Gensokyo, which exists as a sort of haven for gods, magical beings, youkai, etc. separated from modern society. There are 4 difficulty levels you can play at, which are Easy, Normal, Hard, and Lunatic. For newer games, you generally have a choice between a few playable protagonists looking to resolve the incident. Plot summary: The incident that starts Touhou 14 is an unusually large scale youkai rebellion, the appearance of a large upside-down floating castle (the Shining Needle Castle), and the sudden loss of the protagonists' ability to use their main weapons. The amanojaku (basically a type of oni) Seija Kijin incites this incident in an attempt to overthrow and reverse the order/society of Gensokyo. This is because she represents/embodies the antithesis of ideology and acts as an opposing force to anything that is structured, societally accepted, etc. (ex: other's positive emotions give her negative emotions). Her plan is to steal and use the miracle mallet, a magical, wish-granting mallet, from the castle it was sealed in after its inhabitants misused the mallet, causing the death of most of their species (the inchlings). However, the mallet, which has been forgotten over time, is only usable by inchlings. To get around this, she tricks an inchling princess (Kobito Shinmyomaru, the Shining Needle) into thinking that the near-extinction of her race was due to humans and human subjugation. This convinces her to rise up against the humans in Gensokyo and causes this game's incident. This song is the stage 5 theme preceding the stage 5 boss, Seija Kijin. While this theme is playing, you are flying through the upside-down castle, kept aloft by Kobito and the power of the miracle mallet, which represents both the tragedy and the previous glory of the inchling race, while being hindered by Seija to prevent you from getting to Kobito. Seija herself is actually pictured in the video upside-down due to her power to reverse gravity, which she uses against you in battle.

Touhou music is of one of its own kind. ZUN has a really unique and fairly unconventional style of composing music that has inspired a lot of artists including Toby Fox and it wouldn't be an overstatement to say that most character themes have dozens, if not hundreds of fan remixes each. Really hope more is coming! I'd recommend "Hartmann's Youkai Girl", "Emotional Skyscraper - Cosmic Mind" and "Reach for the Moon, Immortal Smoke", although I expect the comment section to already drown in many, many different recommendations.

I'm so glad you started reacting to the Touho OST! And this song is in my top 10 best BGM for the franchise! It's good to see it discovered, since people usually go for the boss themes instead of the stage themes. I can understand how confusing the names and the story can be for a first timer. You've had enough people explaining the setting, the game, and the composer, so let me just add something: The "last" boss of the game is a kobito (a Liliputian) who wields a needle as a weapon. She was helped by a youkai who loves to reverse everything (the fanart used for the video shows her upside down) and wants to make the weak dominate the strong. The kobito will fight the protagonists in her floating castle, which is of course turned upside down, "sinking in the air".

It really speaks to the musical skill of both ZUN, the composer, and the reviewer. Summing up the story of this piece, Touhou 14's story is about the weaker, oppressed youkai preparing for a revolution against the stronger youkai and humans. It's really a story about the underdogs rising up to fight for themselves, and this piece in particular emphasizes the despair that they felt, but also the hope they now have for gaining their freedom.

So, so, SO happy to finally see you tackle some Touhou - especially with my favorite stage theme of the entire series! What you got from this track is exactly why it's my favorite stage theme - the initial confusion building up into determination and persistence. (The word I used here is fully intentional; Touhou was a huge inspiration for Toby Fox, among others.) ZUN, the man who has made the entire series on his own (save for the first 5 games where he worked with a team), from music to coding to design and scenario, is truly a musical genius. Nearly 30 years after the beginning of the series he still manages to come up with truly moving pieces. You have awakened a beast so I'll let other fans recommend other tracks from the games, but worth noting is that Touhou also has a huge fanmade/doujin scene too, especially in terms of music. Some groups have been releasing arranges of all sorts of the original BGMs, from classical to electro to metal, for more than twenty years. It's a deep, deep ocean you've set foot into, but the sirens' songs are worth the listen. And speaking of arranges, since we're talking about The Shining Needle Castle Sinking in the Air, I highly recommend giving a listen to Akatsuki Records' vocal arrangement of it, "乱-Ran-". The vocalist's voice adds another layer to and reinforces your interpretation of the song, I feel.

Every song has a small comment in the jukebox function from the composer and creator of the game, ZUN. For this song he wrote: I made it a song with no real meaning besides feeling sad. It has a sorrowful melody, but a light-hearted rhythm. I feel like when this sort of song starts playing, you've entered the final part of the game.

Giving info because it feels like an obligation due to being a touhou fan for almost a decade: "What is Touhou?" Touhou Project is a series of Japanese bullet hell games made by one man commonly known as "ZUN", real name: Jun'ya Ota. Unlike most bullet hell type games, this series' characters are all girls doing magic battles rather than the typical spaceships. It does have a story and over 100 characters (iirc, over 150), some more developed than others, some seen only once, others sticking for many games (Like the protagonist Reimu Hakurei and deuteragonist Marisa Kirisame) . Most characters have their own "Boss Themes" , that added to the fact that there is Stage themes, main menus, credits, etc, made touhou have more or less 400 themes throughout the many games. So yeah, the main thing about Touhou is the music. The huge fanbase has "circles" with groups that make covers for touhou music, going from soft bossa-nova to heavy metal, there's just anything and everything really. General story: The world is set in Gensokyo, a land of fantasy sealed away from the real world. Inside reside some humans stuck in old japan times, but more importantly, Youkai, Gods and more mythological beings (which take shape of anime girls because of course). There the balance is delicate and if disturbed by "Incidents" everything can go awry, so the Protagonists (mainly Reimu) take the job of cleaning up the mess that someone were to create. (So obviously, each incident is a new game. Going about the story of This theme now. This theme is from "Touhou 14: Double Dealing Character", where in a nutshell, someone wants to reverse the hierarchy of the world, making the weak dominate the strong, and reverse everything basically. So that someone manipulates another more powerful character and causes a small rebellion. They eventually get defeated by the protagonists of course and the status quo is restored. Just in this game alone there's like 8 new characters and 18 new songs haha. Things of notice: 1.- Don't expect different genres, at least in the main games. If you listen to the CD music or the spin offs like Touhou 12.3 then there will be more variety. 2.- Old games' themes are "weird" sounding, because well, they're old. (Notable from Touhou 1 to Touhou 9) 3.- Touhou 1 to 5 is an "old era" (PC-98 type of old), so the music is chiptune/32-bits (ain't an expert to know how it's properly called) 4.- Be careful because as I said, there's a lot of fan work, including fan games with their own themes. So you might accidentally listen to one that isn't from Touhou itself. Lastly 5.- Enjoy and sorry for the humongous comment 😅 (I think no one will ever read this)

Hi Marco! Long time listener, first time caller! Touhou has been my biggest interest for over a decade now and I really appreciate you checking it out. The music has been a big part of my life, and has brought up many emotions along the way. I know many people will recommend the classic pieces like U.N. Owen Was Her? etc. as they are very iconic, but I want to recommend some of my personal favorites and some with really good storytelling. - Fires of Hokkai + Emotional Skyscraper ~ Comic Mind (a final Stage + Boss theme, personal favorites) - Where is that Bustling Marketplace Now ~ Immemorial Marketeers (A final Boss theme, some amazing storytelling) - The Deviants Unobstructed Light ~ Kingdam of Nothingness (The most recent final Boss theme, very unique by Zun standards) - The Sea Where One's Home Planet Reflects + Pure Furies ~ Whereabouts of the Heart (another Stage + Boss theme, they tell the story of this boss perfectly) - Tomorrow will be Special; Yesterday was Not (a Stage theme, another personal favorite) - Every Day a Red Day ~ Folksy Touhou days (a Zun made track for an arrangement album made by the community, embodies the spirit of Touhou perfectly) - Maiden's Capriccio ~ Dream Battle (theme of the main protagonist, Reimu Hakurei) - Love-coloured Master Spark (theme of the secondary protagonist, Marisa Kirisame) Also if you are interested in reading the character's stories, you can find their official profiles written for the games in Touhou wiki! Zun has also written a comment for each track, you can find those in the music comment section for each game. Hope you enjoy the journey that is Touhou music!

I am so, so glad that you didn't just start with U.N. Owen or Necrofantasia or something; those are earnestly not nearly as representative of the series as people seem to think they are. Picking what basically amounts to a random song out of the over 2 contiguous days of original music is very refreshing. Also: Touhou absolutely does have a story, but it's more realistically a story per-game that's connected to a greater setting, rather than one overarching story. Sometimes the games are directly related to one-another, but rarely require knowledge of a previous game to play and get. Emotional stakes are... kinda there? Usually not really, or at least not like major character stakes. Those are usually reserved for the side material, like official manga and books, and often take place over an extreeeemely long time. Touhou has an enormous cast of fun characters, each with their own music theme, some with multiples, much of it absolutely baller. If you want specifically music with emotional drive to it, I would highly recommend music from the Hifuu subseries; a series of music CDs ZUN makes when he goes to Comiket but didn't have time to make a game, so he makes a music CD by itself with a short story written to accompany it. You could even look into the remix and arrangement work for it, as it's not an exaggeration to say that Touhou's music single-handedly keeps the Doujin music scene alive. There's terabytes of Touhou arrangement music out there; literally over a hundred thousand tracks.

Don't get me wrong: there's a fair amount of depth to at least some Touhou Characters, but it often doesn't show up in the shoot-em-ups, where there's just, realistically, a pretty hefty restriction on just how much dialogue is allowed to be there to not throw off the flow of the game itself. If it shows in the games, most of the time it's in the fighting games. Usually it ends up in side materials, and basically asks if you've read Everything.

Man I'm so glad to see Marco finally getting around to some Touhou, great journey ahead! One suggestion, I'd recommend in cases like this stage theme, reacting also to the boss theme alongside it would be awesome! In the Touhou games there's often many connections and shared ideas between a stage and its respective boss theme, many times the boss themes feel like a direct continuation from the stage theme. To this I'd greatly recommend Touhou 17's stage 6 theme, Electric Heritage along with it's respective boss, Keiki Haniyasushin's theme, Idolatrize World (which btw also uses the main leitmotif of the series, Theme of Eastern Story!!).

I nearly inhaled my tongue when I saw you doing something Touhou-related Marco; I've been a huge fan of Touhou for a very long time so to see you doing this now almost a year after finding you is a really cool! Touhou is actually a long collection of stories, rather than a single one - though they take place with many of the same characters, in order. The music _typically_ goes pretty well with the emotions and story that are meant to be portrayed, which is pretty incredible seeing as how the mainline games are all done by a single guy, ZUN. Touhou has a LOT of good music. Like, an ABSURD amount. Touhou 14, A.K.A. Touhou Kishinjou ~ Double Dealing Character, hosts two of my favorite tracks in the whole series: "Kobito of the Shining Needle ~ Little Princess," and "Primordial Beat ~ Pristine Beat." However, as for tracks that I think would be the most interesting for you in regards of music breakdown, I'd have to recommend the following (KINDA ordered): "Kobito of the Shining Needle ~ Little Princess" (Final boss, TH14 ~ Double Dealing Character), but I'd HIGHLY recommend listening to "The Exaggerated Castle Keep" (Final Stage of the same game) beforehand. "Pure Furies ~ Whereabouts of the Heart" (Final boss, TH15 ~ Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom), where I'd again recommend listening to the accompanying Stage theme - "The Sea Where One's Home Planet Reflects" - beforehand. "Gensokyo Millenium ~ History of the Moon" (Final boss (#1), TH8 ~ Imperishable Night) "Thunderclouds of Magical Power" (Extra Stage, TH14 ~ Double Dealing Character) "Entrusting this World to Idols ~ Idolatrize World" (Final boss, TH17 ~ Wily Beast and Weakest Creature)

Context is a little bit deeper with Touhou itself, as ZUN, the creator of the entire mainline games and key to its official spinoffs, use each of these games as diaries. That's also true for its designs which represents the folklore he wants to portray, and its music where ZUN has his own notes about it. In the game itself, the protagonists have to stop a revolution from weak yokais who have the power to subdue the strong yokais who held them back. This being led by a literal inchling with the role of a princess and a LOT of size complex, but with a mischievous mastermind as her right hand who, as an amanojaku, has a literally twisted mind in which she's happy when others are suffering, and viceversa, alongside other reversed emotions; thus, for example, she finds peace in war, which caused her to incite the incident. As for ZUN's note, it says like this: "The stage 5 theme. I made it a song with no real meaning besides feeling sad. It has a sorrowful melody, but a light-hearted rhythm. I feel like when this sort of song starts playing, you've entered the final part of the game."

Ooooh boy Marco reacting to Touhou music! Although I haven't kept up with the series for some time I've been its fan for ages and considering how music-focused it is, I'm so excited to see you cover its OST. I had to double-check if it wasn't something else that shares the name. As always I'm shocked to see you quite accurately pick up the cues of the character/story/etc represented by the music, even with total lack of context like in this case. I mean it shouldn't be a shock since music has always evolved to convey emotions and messages, but for a musically uninclined person like me it's always amazing to see that at work. Especially considering ZUN's style is really unique. The character represented by this music Kijin Seija is absolutely a character defined by the terms underdog, desperation, etc. And when you mentioned "trying to understand an outcome, things are not as they appear" I was really surprised because subversion is also a central theme of the character. Music is such a wonderful thing, and people who do music are truly amazing. If I had to choose one OST to suggest it's Gensokyo Loved by the Gods (神々が恋した幻想郷), stage three theme from Mountain of Faith. It's a beautiful score, widely considered one of the best OSTs of the series, and because of the title (Gensokyo is the name of the world Touhou is set in) a lot of fans treat it as the theme music of the series itself. Another OST I personally like is Reach for the Moon, Immortal Smoke (月まで届け、不死の煙), the character theme of the boss Fujiwara no Mokou. Although a lot of comments explained what Touhou is, something I feel I should add: a common confusion is what's official and what's fanmade. Only the official bullet hell games made by ZUN, the secondary fighting game series made with ZUN, and some books and comics are original Touhou titles. Everything else, like "Touhou anime", "Touhou adventure game" "Castlevania-inspired Touhou game" etc are derivative works.

Touhou is a bullet hell shooting game, a "very hard" game that throw everything your way to beat you down mercilessly, every battle themes seemingly have no stake but your life is on stake all time through out the battle, the music is there to connect your emotion to the moment not what has happened nor what is going to happen, all that matter is to live through the moment of now

I'm SO happy you listened to a Touhou song! As a long time Touhou fan I hope you listen to many more and maybe even play one of the games. As other comments have given context to this specific stage I won't go over that again but I will explain Touhou as a whole. Touhou is a series of danmaku or bullet hell games in which the player controls a character and dodges colorful bullet patterns while traveling through 5-6 stages. Each stage has a mid-stage boss and a final boss with other enemies throughout the stage. In each game you usually play as one of the following characters: Reimu Hakurei ( the shrine maiden of Hakurei Shrine whose job it is to resolve incidents), Marisa Kirisame (a self proclaimed 'ordinary magician' and Reimu's best friend), Sakuya Izayoi (the head maid of the Scarlett Devil Mansion), Sanae Kochiya (the shine maiden of Moriya Shrine), or Youmu Konpaku (the gardener and swordplay instuctor of Hakugyokurou in the Netherworld). Each game has a story and each game's story connects to the story of at least one previous game. Additionally, each of the characters I listed above have some reason to try to resolve the incident and thus fight the game's various bosses. It's also common for characters to show up in multiple games alongside new characters. The story of Touhou is presented in a light-hearted manner to the player but the stakes for the characters are usually high and the stories that take place in the various Touhou manga and in the characters' backstories can get very dark. Some of the most interesting parts of Touhou's story is told through the music albums that are released by Touhou's creator, ZUN, every so often. Overall, I think Touhou's story is very cool and very interesting but it's long so I don't recommend trying to read it all at once. (And finding English translations can be tricky sometimes.) P.S. My recommendations for other Touhou songs are: Tomorrow will be Special Yesterday was Not, Pure Furies ~ Whereabouts of the Heart, Solar Sect of Mystic Wisdom ~ Nuclear Fusion, Flowering Night, and Lunar Clock ~ Luna Dial. P.P.S. I hope I haven't overloaded you with too much information and too many songs recommendations lol.

People said things, so I am just going to list a track from the early games. The first five games were released for an old Japanese computer series PC-9801 and they sound more chiptune-ish. Touhou 01's Civilization of Magic - kzread.info/dash/bejne/aYqoxsGuqbKXpbw.html; one of the possible final bosses's second theme, though you probably won't hear it much because second phase is either a victory lap or having no idea what to do and dying super fast. In the actual game itself it was named "We Shall Die Together", but it was later renamed to Civilization of Magic. There isn't quite much to say since TH01's story is very bare bones even for PC-98 era. The final boss is an angel who turns into some... thing for second phase (though given Sariel lies at the end of Demon World, possibly she's a fallen angel). Touhou 02's Complete Darkness - kzread.info/dash/bejne/oaZ909aFda_Hoaw.html; the final boss theme. Although Mima is a bit of a joke after Stage 4 boss, given she she operates in a predictable cycle where as Stage 4 boss is an RNG festival, Mima is not a pushover and probably the most popular character of PC-98 era (the few that you can argue are more popular have since reappeared). There's also actual story in-game this time, even if it's just "something bad is happening, go find out who did it". Mima may have not been seen since 1998 (aside from being on the cover of a Touhou 03 soundtrack remaster released in 2007, but that's kinda cheating) but she sure has left an impression. Touhou 03's Sailor of Time - kzread.info/dash/bejne/gqeYx9GBYZnaqaw.html; the theme of Stage 8 (since this is is stylized as a versus game with 9 stages rather than typical 6-stage Touhou experience, most stage themes are the character themes and only Stage 7-9 are guaranteed to have a specific theme). I just like this theme, totally not posting it because this is where my most PoDD runs game over. Touhou 04's Crescent Dream - kzread.info/dash/bejne/iop6r4-EmKi0pMY.html; this is an unused track that shows up in the next game's music test. Apparently was meant to be used for the staff roll. Gives a really nice cozy, dénouement vibe. Touhou 05's Grimoire of Alice - kzread.info/dash/bejne/pYGgqKWwf82vfbQ.html; the theme of the Extra stage boss... in which you rematch a stronger Alice. This Alice was explicitly said to be inspired by Alice from Megami Tensei (which ZUN clearly enjoyed as you could see some reference here and there to that series)... and that Alice was in turn inspired somewhat by Lewis Caroll's Alice in Wonderland. So yeah, Alice in Wonderland. While fourth game is the first game that resembles the typical Touhou experience, fifth game is all but a prototype for the Windows system, given that it is the first game where plot is more than "some weird thing happened, go find out why"; in this case you know what's happening and you're going towards the source to do something with it (though what exactly depends on the character). Probably best seen in how many attack patterns from this game were reused in later games, or at least vaguely inspired by them. Touhou 06's Lunar Clock ~ Luna Dial - kzread.info/dash/bejne/n2WitNeQobqWabQ.html; stage 5 boss theme. You waltzed into a mansion trying to find who the fuck created this mist that blocks out the sun and have to fight the mansion owner's second inhand. Who is a maid that throws knives and manipulates time to make her attacks more annoying. Also she serves a vampire and one of her attacks is specifically just called "The World". ZUN really likes his JoJo references. Touhou 07's Sakura Sakura ~ Japanize Dream - kzread.info/dash/bejne/dqN2xKV8pMi0fNY.html; the staff roll theme. This one is based on a traditional Japanese folk song "Sakura Sakura". Makes sense, given one of the main motifs in seventh game is spring and cherry blossoms (sakuras). Touhou 08's Love-colored Master Spark - kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z5WbzrCoh6axl5c.html; now this is a classic, the most wel known Marisa theme that originated as her boss theme in the eighth game. Now, the theme doesn't really have that much to do with the game itself, but it does have to do with Marisa. Marisa is very loud and blunt social butterfly, but also proud of herself, for she has worked blood and sweat from being just a normal human that has no innate powers (in a world full of people and non-people born with powers) to one of the strongest humans in this land. In a land where most fight using intricate attack patterns, Marisa's most famous (and the one she enjoys using a lot) is just a giant laser. Sometimes two lasers. So the music is similarly very loud and grand. Touhou 09's Eastern Judgement in the Sixtieth Year ~ Fate of Sixty Years - kzread.info/dash/bejne/Yp-B27aSk9Dceto.html; Eiki Shiki's theme. She's basically the final boss of this game. Like third game, this is a versus game, so the themes aren't associated by stage but by character, and you almost always fight her at Stage 9. You probably have lost a life or two just getting to her, and then the game decides to kick you a nut by making you fight for your victory in the last stage. You'll hear this theme a lot if you want to clear the game without using continues lol. The only thing missing here is the sheer chaos of sound effects during the actual fight, but ah well, can't have everything.

That's an interesting track to start on. Though, I suggest having a listen of the stage theme followed by the boss theme to get the whole picture. Probably explains why I see no one say anything about the boss character at the end of this stage, which would be Seija Kijin. Her theme, Reverse Ideology, would add more to it. However, what you said of things not as they appear does certainly apply to who Seija is and what she does. I won't say anymore, although the title of her theme definitely says a lot. I'm curious what conclusion you draw upon if you hear Reverse Ideology. Another thing, the majority of the main games tend to go through six stages and an extra stage, each stage and boss having their own unique themes. In some instances, returning characters will at times get a new theme, which means some characters can have multiple themes. As to why I say main games, there are also side games that deviate from the formula as well as fan games. The creator of the series allows the fans to have fun with the world of Gensokyo, which is where Touhou Project mostly takes place. I say mostly because other places characters travel to are also the spirit realms, including parts of Hell, and the moon. As for the stakes, depends on the story of the game. Sometimes the story starts with an instigation due to boredom or a competition. Sometimes it's something more serious, such as oil spills and radioactive threat, but with a twist. Before posting, I should also point out that instrumental CDs with their own short stories do exist. The stories are mostly of two relatively normal women talking about finding a means to explore an alternate realm, with said alternate realm being Gensokyo.

LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO genuinely so happy you're reviewing touhou music, it's such a special franchise to me and I've been trying to spread the good word of touhou, or at least it's music, for quite a while now (at least to my friends now) This theme youre reacting to is the Stage 5 theme of Touhou: Double Dealing character, so its the background music during normal stages. Theres some boss themes from the same game i think you may like, namely Reverse Ideology (the boss theme of Stage 5, and also sounds similar/the same when played in reverse, which ties into the boss's ability), and the Stage 6 boss theme, Kobito of the Shining Needle ~ Little Princess (quite a similar name to the song youre reacting to, no?) also to explain what touhou is, it's mainline series are SHMUPs (shoot em up)/bullet hell games (so like undertale gameplay wise for example). People love it for its unique and beautiful characters, world, and well, the music. It's gathered this relatively small but very very passionate community (as I think you can tell with the comment section lmao) and they make fanworks on a level that surpasses every other community I've been in. Like, seriously, there are groups of people who make whole fanmade touhou anime, one of which even aired on Japanese TV if memory serves me correct! Touhou was created by ZUN, who I'm pretty sure not only composes the music, but programs the game and writes the story as well (at least, the mainline games, spinoffs like the fighting games are made by different people i think). I think that the original purpose of touhou was actually so that ZUN could put his music in a game. He only wanted wanted make videogame music but ouldn't find a game to put his music in and so he decided "fine, I'll do it myself". At the age of 19. pretty friggin cool! As for some recommendations, i think you'll like Emotional Skyscraper ~ Cosmic Mind (Byakuren's Theme) and Nuclear Fusion (Utsuho's Theme) . They have very good uses of ZUN's most iconic sound (which you heard in this song youre reacting to a bit): the trumpets (or as the community calls it, ZUNpets) There, also Hartmann's Youkai Girl (Koishi's Theme) and Lunar Clock ~ Luna Dial (Sakuya's Theme), which i think you would also find interesting because of the strange time signatures (and Hartmann's Youkai Girl also has the weird thing where it sounds the same/similar when played in reverse!) I think you should also take a listen to his other music outside of the games as he sometimes experiments more with those, and also check out fanmade touhou music as well since some are REALLY good. Touhou fangame Concealed The Conclusion's final boss theme comes to mind, which takes leitmotifs from G free, one of ZUN's works, Maiden's Capriccio ~ Dream Battle (the main character Reimu's most well-known theme), and Eternal Shrine Maiden, which is a theme from the very first game, and is special to the creator, ZUN, especially, to make an emotional rollercoaster of a song that hits even harder for those who recognize all the leitmotifs. Concealed The Conclusion is a fangame that covers a possible sadder what-if ending for the Touhou franchise. There's also Demetori, a metal circle that makes some amazing arranges based on Touhou music (Emotional Skyscraper ~ World's End comes to mind, a metal arrangement of Byakuren's Theme which I mentioned earlier). Real good stuff! Anyways imma stop here because I've written a whole essay already haha. Again, super happy to see this, and I'm glad you liked touhou music so far!

Hi Marco! I love Touhou and I love your insight! Some others have clarified context, but for a bit more, Touhou is a series set in a fantasy land existing in tandem with our reality. (Like Narnia but Japanese) Forgotten deities and mythological beings travel to this land in search of safety as faith in their existence dwindles. The Touhou Project series follows the sociopolitical events of this land and tends to raise some slightly heavier questions revolving around morality and society. Touhou 14: Double Dealing Character (DDC for short) revolves around an attempt to overturn (both literally and metaphorically) the balance of power at the behalf of the weaker beings of this world. This song plays as you the protagonist enters the Shining Needle Castle, a massive upside-down structure hovering in the sky and serving as the base of operations for the leader of the rebellion and her manipulative advisor. There's certainly a sense of mysteriousness and underlying tension here. You mentioned emotional stakes, and I think that's an interesting thing to address because for the boss of this stage (the aforementioned manipulative advisor) there are no stakes... but for the person leading this resistance, this is the single most important event in the history of her people. Even before you get to see or fight the leader, the significance of this revolution is reflected in almost every character in the game up to this point... except for the one you're about to fight. Also a quick sidenote: I don't recommend using AI to write the description. It kinda shows, and doesn't necessarily reflect very well.

It's always cool to see someone find out about Touhou, so a quiiick summary: Touhou is a series of Bullet Hell games (shmup but HARD), where you go through 5 to 6 stages, each having a boss at the end. the story of each game is self confined, and usually is pretty simple (mostly, there are problems happening, the main characters go to see what's happening, and along the journey they discover the "whats" and "whys") but the Sound Track is where the series shines, the stage themes are more emotional, they tell about the place, circunstance and overall feeling of where you are or are going to. The boss themes are more chaotic, but the melodies are very memorable and well written, so you are going to be receiving a lot of request for boss themes hahaha (I recomend Gensokyo Millenium) Also, if you react to more TH music, you will hear the trumpet again, is a staple of the game's solo-developer, we call it ZUMpete

"Kobito of the Shining Needle" would make a lot of sense as a direct "sequel" to this song. Shinmyoumaru, whose theme that is, is the final boss of this game, and the Shining Needle Castle is where you find her. As others have stated, this game is mostly about her desperate and frustrated plot to overthrow the entire power hierarchy of the world of Touhou, as a being of a weak and even discriminated species; though she is also partially being manipulated by someone else into doing this. As for Touhou itself, it's mostly a very silly and lighthearted sort of series, but with pretty great worldbuilding and a gigantic cast of charming colorful characters. And then for some reason, when Touhou plots have a serious aspect to them, it hits twice as hard.

You just opened Pandoras Box with this, but in a good way. Cause there is potentially around 25 games with hundreds of tracks to look into :D I'd also reccomend you to look at this track: Equality Under the Law of Dharma it's from Touhou 15.5: Antinomy of Common Flowers. The ".5" games are actually like spin-offs and the music is composed by the original creator of the main games and another team and it has a slightly different but incredibly distinctive sound.

The end of the description is entirely wrong (the “About DDC” part), really sounds AI generated. The Touhou wiki is a good source for info about the games and characters, I’d suggest checking that. Otherwise, great video! I’d suggest checking Reverse Ideology or Kobito of the Shining Needle.

Touhou has the most amount of fan remixes from... anything. I'm pretty sure there's more Touhou remixes than there are songs in many genres. And the level of quality is astronomically high for some of the circles.

I am not super duper dialed in on the story of Touhou but I think I know enough to just sum it up? Within Japan exists an alternate dimension called Gensokyo, a dimension full of youkai. The protagonist, a shrine maiden named Reimu Hakurei seeks to maintain order. She also has some friends/rivals including Marisa Kirisame who is a normal person from real life who taught herself to use magic after falling into Gensokyo, theres Suika who is weird little youkai who is in a constant state of drunk, and Sanae, who I don't know much about but she's pretty. Some of my favorite characters are Flandre Scarlet, a childlike vampire who can erase things from existence with her power, Sakuya Izayoi, who apparently used to be a vampire hunter but now takes care of Flandre and her sister and live together in the Scarlet Devil Mansion. Her powers are basically a massive JoJo's reference she can stop time and she fights with throwing knives. There's Utsuho Reiuji who is a fan favorite, she has black wings and a nuclear powered arm cannon, and she absorbed the powers of Amaterasu giving her incredible power. Reisen is a Lunarian who came to Earth to escape conflict, and Junko is a Kitsune spirit who is SUPER RACIST against Lunarians because I think one killed her son? I think my favorite character has to be one from the latest game Touhou 19. Son Biten is basically a monkey turned monkey goddess and she has a cursed "staff" that looks more like a really long test tube. Very heavily based on Son Wukong which I think is cool and also she's really freaking pretty oh my goodness. It's a pretty interesting series, the genre is bullet hell, Touhou is like THE bullet hell. These games were also all made almost exclusively by one man called ZUN who is just a maniac lol he comes up with most of the lore while drunk. The music is obviously amazing too you should check out the final boss theme from Touhou 19 it's extremely wild. Other common requests I'll vouch for are Sakuyas and Flandres themes, and Koishi Komejis theme.

Really happy to see you react to Touhou, it's been one of my favorite series for a long time, though it's hard to explain in a compact way, as it has become way more than just the base games thanks to the community built around it. The composer has a very peculiar way to write music, once you have listened some of his tracks it's very easy to recognize his style compared to others. A fun trivia, Undertale was heavily inspired by Touhou, as it's creator has mentioned several times, and it's music has a lot of influence from ZUN's (Touhou's creator and music composer) style, as you might realize later on.

I knew you'd react to Touhou music sooner or later, and great to see some attention given to less frequently acknowledged stage themes. Double Dealing Character has many bangers, as does the series as a whole. Will be exciting to see if you react to more Touhou songs in the future. One I can wholeheartedly recommend is Charming Domination ~ Who Done It? from Perfect Cherry Blossom. That one track is criminally overlooked. And while I'm at it might as well recommend Bell of Avici and Nemesis' Stronhold as well, those are really underappreciated as well.

I love this reaction, thank you Marco for reacting to the Touhou Project! If you ever feel like doing an entire ost reaction, my recommendation would be Touhou 8, which in my opinion is the best, or Touhou 6, which has by far the most popular songs. (Or you should react to the boss theme of this stage, which is called Reverse Ideology)

(If I get something wrong pls feel free to correct me, I've played TH14 just when it came out back in 2014 and I don't remember that much about the story) Context for this piece: This is the 5th stage of Touhou 14th Double Dealing Character. There's an uprising of weak youkais, leaded by the Amanojaku Kijin Seija, who's power is to reverse things basically, but to achieve her dreams of the uprising of the weak and overthrow the strong, she manipulated Shinmyonmaru Sukuna, a Kobito who has the Miracle Mallet, by telling about how people overlook her because of her size, and the weakness of some youkai like tsukumogami, rokurokubi and such, and using the powers of the Miracle Mallet, the incident that make the game happen started. This is the stage before facing Kijin Seija, and basically you are getting her story told in her stage theme as a background before defeating her

Interesting that you started diving into Touhou music from this piece, usually I’d see people start their delve into Touhou, whether it’s the games or the music, from the legacy Windows era (6 to 9 thereabouts). Hopefully you’d explore the other soundscapes that Touhou has to offer, as well as the vast amounts of indie and established musicians have made with the themes of Touhou. On a side note, I do hope we’d get more J-pop-style on Genshin/Honkai music as much as Touhou does, but I suppose that would take a while. The one I’ve heard from HoyoFair doesn’t disappoint.

There's... a lot of music for Touhou. It's a long standing series dating back to the mid 90s. It is also one of if not THE most difficult and thusly popular 2-D shooter in the genre (because those of us that like this game format are masochists). One could say it spawned the idea of unforgiving difficulty.
