Tim is doing the bass, Chance is doing the jaws harp and overtone, Adam is the insane drums and harmonica,( all by mouth ) Austin is the first singer, and last but not least is Rob, the guy with beard and glasses. Tim has a 5+ octave range, Chance has 4. Adam is affectionately known as the freak of nature. Hope this helps !

To really get a dose of Tim's range in Ring Of Fire, you need to watch the Sing Off version. Avi is great, but for me it kind of muddied the waters by having two basses. Just my opinion.

It's full of tricks but I think it just missed the emotional point of the song. Dilana Robichaux got the point of it, I like hers better than Johnny's. Voice quality isn't the point but Dilana's blues rasp suits that song the best.

I've watched a ton of reaction videos this last year and this is the first time I felt compelled to compliment the presenter. Your honest, knowledgeable reaction is priceless and you don't go on for the dramatics or the deeply involved explanations, just the right touch. Thank you.

Austin Brown, the son of Rebbie Jackson (Michael's oldest sister) is a singer, but he's not in Home Free... Home Free's Austin Brown sings the lead on "When A Man Loves A Woman"... if you watch that video, you'll be able to see he is not related to Michael Jackson... same name, tho.

Not only are you VERY knowledgeable and skilled in music, you have a MUCH more rare ability! You are a NATURAL teacher! You explain it well well, as well as making it not only interesting AND fun. But worth closely listening to.

@@jessicasopranonotes I second this suggestion miss. Their homage to End of the Road is cest magnifique ! The "Overtone" singer you were mentioning is Adam Chance. He does bass duty when Tim Foust (Baso Profundo) is singing. If you want a whole song of Adam Chance, try Some Girls do. As many have mentioned Ring of Fire is a must and I think Hillbilly Bone is also a truly fun show off piece.

You really need to listen to their cover of "Helplessly Hoping" to hear more of Chance (the overtone singer). He also sings a good deal in their cover of "Folsom Prison Blues." But honestly, you're going to find that there are well over a hundred music videos from Home Free and you'll find something amazing in pretty much all of them. By the way, they are Tim Foust (the bass), Adam Chance (baritone and the overtone singer), Adam Rupp (the beatboxer), Rob Lundquist (beard, glasses, buttery voice), and Austin Brown (high tenor).

One piece of advice, DON'T watch Mayday until you get used to the members and what parts they sing. You'll appreciate it that much more! Helplessly Hoping is a good choice to best Chance sing more lead. The Butts Remix, Hillbilly Bone, and All About That Bass show their more comedic side. If you want to hear Tim drop the bottom out to subterranean levels, watch Misty Mountains with Peter Hollens! It's amazing! All in all there's not a bad song or video out there from Home Free!

"Mayday" is one of their very best, but you can't get maximum enjoyment unless/until you know their voices. Save it for later. Fortunately, there are PLENTY more excellent performances. "Ring of Fire" is my all-time favorite. As a bass-lover, you will LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this performance because it features TWO of the best basses in the business - Tim Foust and Avi Kaplan. With 2 great basses, they can have a solid bass solo AND keep the bass line going at the same time!

For a Bass lover- there’s several contest videos with three OUTSTANDING a cappella basses ... i think Tim has a E0 ...maybe a growl...but in tune and sustained.

The Jew's Harp at the beginning and end as well as the harmonica without a harmonica as you put it are stand alone amazing. I also like bass singers and Tim really gets down there immediately following his solo which is really nice. The beat boxer draws me in a lot during this song, so it is difficult for me to put a finger on my favorite part. I think you might enjoy Peter Hollins singing "Misty Mountains" featuring Tim Foust from this video. It is a layered a cappella piece that I find wonderful in arrangement and performance. Tim's final note in that song can rattle building foundations LOL. Even if you don't do a video of that song, please just check it out for your own enjoyment, it's really good, interesting, complex and all the things music should be.

I’ve watched several reactions to these guys doing this song. The best one was showing it to my g/f and I watched the look on her face when Tim started his part.

The rabbit hole of Homs Free is deep with many curves. They are so, so versatile and continue to surprise me with their breath and, of course the depth within their musical selections. I’m so happy I discovered your channel and look forward to more of your Home Free reactions. Note: several of their songs/videos display humor, fun and a carefree attitude. That includes goofiness. Enjoy.

This was the first video where their beatboxer started experimenting with a looper. He never used one before this but they got one for him. Towards the end of the video there's a basic beat and Adam Rupp (beatboxer extraordinaire) is also doing some fancy stuff. That is because he recorded and looped the simpler stuff so he could do both.

Adam Rupp has been using the looper/loop station for like ten years on his solo stuff. On his channel he has videos of it. I think the first time they used one on the stage with the whole band was with Castle On The Hill. They use the looper only on one or two songs of the set.

I love the bit straight after Tim sings his quite deep solo then the view flips onto the rest of the band - and they sing and Tim sings the line again with them - but this time another whole octave lower - like OMG that is one deep voice. And the mouth organ - like how is that possible - these guys are all awesome!

That didgeridoo sound is the sound of a juice harp (misheard as jew’s harp), an instrument played in the mouth while plucking it. It was called a juice harp because it produces a lot of spit. The didgeridoo is a wind instrument native to Australia and wouldn't be found in American Mountain Folk Music (Hillbilly Music). In any case, Adam is imitating its sound with his mouth without the instrument!

I just found Home Free yesterday. Apparently I live under a rock. I know absolutely nothing about music other than how much I enjoy it. Your breakdown and explanation made this even better. I can “kind of” pick up on a lot more of the finer details I would normally miss as an untrained ear and that makes it even more impressive and enjoyable! Thank you. 😄

They do many types of music. They have fun songs, they have country songs and they have songs that I love for the harmony. I keep getting drawn back to the ones where I love the harmony: "auld ang syne" "helplessly hoping" "how great thou art"

Their cover of O Holy Night and Do You Hear What I Hear are both completely phenomenal. The best covers of both songs I’ve ever heard. OH and their cover of How Great Thou Art is fantastic too!

What I find amazing about this group of musicians is, of course the multi faceted beat boxer, but the vocalists are all of solo capacity and each voice has a different texture that is distinct, but those same voices blend into full, rich harmonies that blend seamlessly into melted dark chocolate for the ear. They also do many different genres with success. Variety is their hallmark.

Outstanding, they are exceptionally talented group, just outrageously great 👍 what a treat. 😊 Thank you all.

I am lovin' that stank face as Austin hits that first growl. Freaking hilarious! On with the rest of the song! Edit: That reaction to Tim starting to drop was classic! Austin's upper range shines on their cover of "Elvira" with the original singers, The Oakridge Boys. If you really enjoy basses, you would love "Hard to Be Cool in a Minivan (Oakridge Boys)," "Battle Hymn of the Republic (William Lee and Chris Golden; and bass singer, Tim Duncan)," Home Free-"How Great Thou Art," "Im Tiefen Kellar (sorry, my German is a little rusty)"-Hans Rolf Rippert (aka Ivan Rebroff), anything done by the following: Tim Storms, Zlatopolsky, Vladimir Miller, Glen Miller (basso profundo and not the jazz man, obviously), Der Drei Basse, Tim Riley, Christian Davis, Matt Fouch, Jeff Chapman, JD Sumner, George Younce, Campbell Vertesi, the late Harold Reid, Martii Telvala, Samuel Ramey, and the list goes on. I am a bass 1/bass-baritone myself and enjoy listening to basses from most styles. Avi Kaplan does a great job with "Black is the Color" when he collaborated with Peter Hollens. Same with Tim Foust when he did "The Song of the Lonely Mountain" with Peter Hollens. Coincidentally, if memory serves me correctly, Tim Foust bottoms out at a B0. Could be mistaken though. Adam Chance is the one doing the over tone part making the sound of a mouth harp and he is the baritone of the group. He is the featured singer in their cover of "Cover Me Up" and you really get to appreciate his voice as he does the entire song himself and the rest of the guys just sing background, harmonies and such. Plus there is a sweet message within the video about Chance and his significant other. ( NOTE: Adam Chance is just called Chance by the group since there are two Adams in the group.

I believe the singer doing the overtone singing is Adam Chance, a Baritone, who also has a great low range and generally amazing voice. He's the one standing on the back left when they're in a group of 5.. I see you caught him at the end. Adam Rupp is their amazing beatboxer, who I think swallowed a harmonica at some point in his childhood. He's remarkable in is range and type of effects. He's well featured in Home Free's Folsom Prison Blues cover, and so is Adam Chance singing much more than overtone. They're all amazing. There's also some remarkable video of Adam Rupp doing a 'drum solo' at one of their live shows. It's mind-boggling. Keep up the great reviews. I'm mostly in for the acapella stuff, but count me as a new subscriber.

Adam Chance the baritone singer used to sing bass in his former group called 7th street sympnony...Austin Brown (the red headed high tenor) was a cruise ship entertainer prior to joining HomeFree..that may explain why he is such a good performer ..listen to any of their stuff it's a promise that you will enjoy them all

The man that 'it was the whole time' is Adam Chance (yes, there are 2 Adams in the group, Adam Rupp the beatboxer and him, he goes by Chance to avoid confusion). Chance joined the group after Chris Rupp, one of the founders of the group left (amicably) to peruse a solo career. Chris Rupp actually helped pick his replacement, which is pretty cool. Chance is a baritone but can down to bass as well, something his predecessor couldn't do (Chris Rupp is a high baritone, almost a tenor). The new guy being able to sing bass freed up Tim to do some...other stuff that you'll see if you watch a song they covered called 'Mayday'.

Loved your reaction and analysis. I always learn something I hadn't seen before when I listen to your take on things, so thank you for enriching my enjoyment of these groups. This time it was the overtone singing from Chance. Adam Rupp has a very deep and wide assortment of "sounds" that he routinely slides into his beatboxing arrangements with their songs; his range is extensive and if you're not watching him and only using your ear, I'm not sure you recognize the human element 90% of the time! Austin (the lead singer here) has some classical training, I believe, but I've heard him go from country to yodeling ("All About That Bass") to R&B ("End of the Road") to gospel ("Beautiful Star of Bethlehem") with ease. And if you like sounds, listen to Mitch sound like an electric guitar using a megaphone in Pentatonix's cover of "Bohemian Rhapsody."

Home Free is a wonderful group to listen to and they have many more songs that are sure to amaze and entertain you and us. Another on that would be fun and has a lovely surprise if you haven't experienced them would be Pisces by Jinjer. The lead singer has an amazing voice and I would love to see your analysis.

Yes, Adam, the beatboxer, is (not) playing a harmonica. Also (Adam) Chance, the baritone, is doing the Jaw (or Jew's) Harp sound, what you were calling the overtone singing. I believe Rob did the scratchy record sound, but it might have been Chance.

Loved the video! You should check out a band called Unleash the Archers. Specifically, their track, "Awakening". Their lead singer's voice (Brittney Slayes) is amazing. The whole group is immensely talented and this track really shows it.

Love my guys, appreciate and love them even more after hearing more depth from watching your analysis. Agree with other comments, you hear things we would miss, and ate so good at explaining what's going on Plus, your candybar analogy is terrific! Need some chocolate now, with Tim's bass melting it!

Helplessly Hoping, Seven Bridges, Auld Lang Syne by them is great too. Tim with Peter Hollen doing Misty Mountains is a beautiful example of layering their two voices, Tim goes sub- bass in this one, Tim is a five octave voice. To hear Chance the guy at the end, I would suggest Can’t Outrun You cover of Trace Adkins. Sorry if too many suggestions, they are amazing.

You'd think this would be near the bottom of Tim's range. It's not.

In addition to their Boys II Men cover (awesome!), the "Butts Remix" is another you'd really enjoy. They get a little silly in the video, which is hilarious, but the mash-up is ridiculously tight.
