    Fun fact about Happy Chao's design. He is meant to look like a blue demon but more specific a "blue Oni". There is a very famous story about a red oni who was sad and didn't like being a monster and all he wanted to do was befriend humans (sol badguy) and the red oni's friend, the blue oni who decided to help him out (happy chaos). The blue Oni went into town and attacked the townsfolk, making himself the hero and when the red Oni saw him and tried to stop him the blue Oni ran away, thus making the red Oni seem like the "hero who saved everyone". This story fits happy chaos character as well since his one goal is to use his immense powers to cause mayhem and make himself the "bad guy" so that "heroes" will arrive and defeat him. In other words giving everyone a common enemy they can unite in defeating together. He longs for the beautiful blue sky that comes after the violent storm ("when the violent storm is over. The Blue sky is more beautiful than ever")

    For me it's one of the best songs in the album just for how it changes once you've watched the story and understand what HC /is/. He's omniscient and if not omnipotent he's at least one of the most powerful characters in the canon with straight-up reality-warping power; All of it attached to a mind and morality that's no longer human. He orchestrates wars and atrocities out of simple boredom, in the story mode of Strive he vaporizes a skyscraper full of people without care or thought just because it was built on top of something he wants. He lays out his only real motives in the song; He doesn't expressly want to kill people per se (Can you hear it, the pulses of the living...it's a grand orchestra...who wants to stop this?"), but pushing people to the brink brings out emotions and stories in them that he relishes ("when the violent storm is over, blue sky is more beautiful than ever...that's all I want"). He's a villain because there's powerful heroes to "stop" him, he uses magic guns because he thinks they're cool and using his real power would be too easy. If the situation was reversed he'd just as happily play the hero. First time you listen it's "haha care-free happy meme man". Coming back after the story it's "God is a madman and we're his favorite comic book".

    Hell, it even lays that out in the very first line of the song. "It took me 10 years to find the answer to something, but I forgot about it in 2 seconds." Essentially, what he's saying here was that he didn't want the answer, what he wanted was the excitement of the mystery. He's the living embodiment of "the journey is more important than the destination.", which he even further highlights by constantly alluding to not wanting things to stop.

    Happy Chaos is an absolutely insane character. Basically he was the first person to discover magic and taught it to the human race. Then he proceeded to discover every possible thing in existence, like he literally became omniscient. So now his problem is - he's bored, so he plays around with people to try and make a new interesting story as if he's writing a book. The line "there's hundreds of me" isn't deep, he literally just made hundreds of himself. Also in-game - despite being the strongest mage in the world, he just fights with a random gun he found and his main mechanic is trying to make him pay attention to the fight and not get bored.

    Happy Chaos is not only immortal, he's also all-knowing--and he's _bored._ That's his primary motivation--moreso than regaining his lost half, even though that's what he tries to do during the story. He talks up how he's one half of a dichotomy between mere existence and pure desire, and how both halves of that dichotomy are suffering without the other, but--at the end of the day, Happy Chaos does things because he wants the universe to surprise him. Spoilers ahead: . . . . . So when he kidnaps a bunch of government officials, _this_ happens (paraphrased): Official: "Let us go." HC: "Why?" Official: "Because it would be _really funny."_ HC: "...you son of a bitch, I'm in" It's a bit more drawn-out and philosophical than that, but yeah, Happy Chaos is the man who knows everything, desperate to find a story that he doesn't know the ending to. (I'm totally stealing him for a tabletop campaign.)

    Drift thematically pairs well with Asuka’s “Gravity”, Axl Low’s “Out of The Box”, and I-No’s “Requiem” in the sense that Happy Chaos is character with god level power and unparalleled knowledge. But said power and knowledge gives Happy Chaos a pure nihilistic view of the world given that seeking a definitive meaning would render and limit things with their definitive value. Gaining the knowledge of the Backyard and the reality warping potential it contains could’ve possibly gave Chaos an existential crisis and drove Chaos mad. It thematically opposes Asuka’s theme, Gravity. Where Asuka’s theme expresses the necessity and value in existential and essential things to bind thoughts, ideas, and people together. While Chaos is truly alone and adrift while essentially free being the finite and the infinite. Edit: also if you listen closely both themes essentially start almost with the same core notes but with polar opposite delivery

  • @yikes6758

    @yikes6758

    5 күн бұрын

    There's also Ramlethal's theme, which is a dialectic between the universal will's ideology she was raised in, and a rising voice expressing a profound rejection of nihilism and a celebration of the beauty of life and all its requisite parts; suffering as counterpart to love and joy, that none can exist without the other. Reading the comment from @Vikaryous21 made me realize the "room without a sky", being a world without conflict, is therefore a world with no violent storm of beautiful blue sky that follows it. A contained world without conflict or suffering, but consequently no joy nor love. It's inharmonious, because there is no dichotomy; harmony requires two separate parts communicating with each other. The UW is an entropic force against dichotomy and harmony, while happy chaos is a screaming voice desperate to create that harmony by any means necessary. His actions are by our measure evil, but they're an evil that rejects the UW's entropy. Happy Chaos plays the role of the catalyst for suffering, followed by conflict, triumph, and joy. He is a foil in the grand play, setting himself up to fall so that the beautiful blue sky can be made. Ramlethal's growing love for life and humanity is a celebration of essentially what Happy Chaos represents, but not necessarily his actions. Happy Chaos is an artificial wrench in the gears, but his actions a reflect a natural truth of the behavior of the world, and it's that natural tendency toward conflict and harmony which Ramlethal comes to understand is worth more than a world theoretically without suffering.

    In Guilty Gear there's this guy known as That Man who is believed to be behind every major catastrophe past the hundred years in Guilty Gear. For example, he appeared in Japan and what followed in his wake was the destruction of the entire nation and cursing every living japanese with superhuman abilities. It was believed that Asuka, the scientist behind creation of the Gears, artificial magical creatures that turned on mankind, was That Man. While Happy Chaos is an all new character in Guilty Gear, it was revealed that there were actually two That Men. One was indeed Asuka who was thought to be a villain. But Happy Chaos is the other one. And he's the actual villain behind the catastrophes. And Asuka just took the blame for it all and actually has been fighting Happy Chaos behind the scenes.

    While i don't really know if the jazz in particular is his 'true' theme as you were suggesting, I did arrive at a thought some time ago that the song is supposed to be divided into two perspectives. One from him, of course, and the other from everybody around him. First half of the songs portrays Happy Chaos as... well... chaotic and like someone who has gone mad. The 'right right right...' is portraying the carelessness that people see in him. And then there's even the chorus(?) singing about drifting, further suggesting the notion of his lack of care. BUT THEN we notice towards the second half that lyrics are becoming a bit more complete. HC is explaining further his goals and after the last 'right right right' section we get an almost seemingly 'mad' side of him, where he is tired and anxious that people don't understand him. He CARES. He very much cares about what he is doing, about the people around him. About the world. And after it, finally, he gets the time to sing without any kind of interruption with a beautiful simphony behind about what EXACTLY he wants. He finally gets to fully express his feelings and we get to understand him. I love Happy Chaos.

    The droning guitar riffs in the song are also small hints at Happy Chaos's status as a deity of sorts, specifically the infinity portion. Happy Chaos is indeed a very shattered existence and broken mind, pulled in all sorts of directions and bored out of his skull from knowing entirely too much. Lost in an ocean of information, a plethora of perspectives, finding himself both lost in the static and embodying said noise. He craves a drama intense enough to pull him to a single point, and the cathartic conclusions that'd come out of it. Such a fascinating motivation for a character.

    Happy Chaos is such a fun character. Also the Black Sea is perhaps a bit of a reference for storms, as he cherishes the drama and the tension, and will be the rocky waves and heavy storms to see humanity triumph. He also is pretty happy to really just mess around, for example, opting to fight with a gun, rather than his absurd powers, or having people deliberately poke holes in his plans

    I think the use "I will just be a black sea" is interesting. Mainly because it's not necessarily something so dark you can't see into, but if we relate it to the Black Sea in our world (which is known for being a hot spot for tourists to bathe and float in), Happy Chaos could also imply that he will be someone that will help float/ carry others c:

    4:49 'understanding why we say what we say' absolutely on track for this. the lyrics may not always be apparent on the surface for Strive but they are absolutely relevant to the story of each character. guilty gear strive is a very story-rich game despite just being a fighting game...but the game also comes with a full feature-length movie (and the DLC has *another* movie with it!) and all the character themes are lyrically relevant to their mindsets.

For example asuka is constantly pondering over the truth and the meaning of existence, meanwhile chaos considers truth fake and thinks eggs exist so that the omlette can be invented. Or how asuka is focused on control while chaos does whatever is interesting and frequently gives up control

    4:36 - 5:00 The lyrics actually make much more sense when you consider the Buddhist influence in Japan. One of the thoughts on reality in Buddhism is "Reality is only ever what you think it is." In such context you or me, seen by a hundred people will have a hundred different versions of us exist in those people. In Happy Chaos' case, he's a very reality bending quantum type individual. So for him, others seeing him could possible actually spawn other versions of him. Thus he is an antagonist who will never die even when killed. He drifts because he's not really got a choice. His existence changes based on observation. He's been pigeon holed into the role of a villain from creating gears, so his post mind blown self reflects what people see in him instead of him being able to determine himself. People think of him as a genius, arrogant, a man playing god, a demon, and reckless, and so he is that way. I think he's the villain who wants the heroes to win, so he sets people up to create heroes would could possibly grow to end the backyard and by extension have the power to end him. (At least that's my theory on the guy)

    The two parts that i most like in the song are the "a two hundred eyes on me,/ 1 hundred mouths speak of me, there as hundred of me/a hundred of me will be born. The truth is not always real" and the "i don't have anything that is important to me, thats why everything is beautiful". The first one the way i interpret is that even when 100 hundred people see or talk about something(in this case Happy Chaos), they all perceive different things, yet while what they might see is the true, they don't know what is the real version of it. Therefore the truth is not always real. The fact that this ends with "i don't want any conclusions" makes me feel Chaos does not want ppl understanding or taking assumptions on why he does what he do. The second one is imo one of the most interesting takes on the phrase. When you have a character that says "i don't have anything that is important to me", normally this character is some edgy, nihilistic person who goes to say "everything is meaningless", but Chaos goes the complete opposite and says "nothing is important to me because everything is equally beautiful", which have such a nicer conotation to it, and makes a picture of a character who loves everything around him instead of hating it. Lastly i would also like to talk about the "when the violent storm is over" part. it makes me think that what he wants is to cause strife (he is the violent storm) so when ppl defeat the storm, the feeling right after that is the best feeling ever, and that is what he wants, to ppl to feel great at the end of a bad situation.

    how i see the line "the truth is not always real" is that before he became what he is now, he was given this sense of reality but now that he has unlimited knowledge and how he quite literally knows everything, he sees the world in a depressing and empty tone that need light where the line "when the violent storm is over blue sky is more beautiful then ever" fits in

  • @JaftenLKA
    @JaftenLKA2 ай бұрын

    Happy Chaos desires the catharsis that comes from the resolution of a "conflict", but he isn't seeking the stillness that comes from "peace". It's the catharsis he mentioned when he referenced how beautiful the blue sky is after a violent storm-but that feeling is fleeting and rare, only occurring after a "violent storm" ends. So, chasing that feeling, Happy Chaos ends up being the kind of chaotic evil character who will gladly become the "villain" (or whatever he needs to be, there's 100 versions of him for every 100 people who observe of him after all) and commit horrible atrocities to innocent people just so that "heroes" will rise up and stop him; and in the same vein, he's someone who could on a whim decide to fight for the "sake of justice" just because it's the more interesting option in that instance. He's an insane but brilliant man who puts no value on good nor evil, just a shit-stirrer for the fun of it, because peace is dreadfully boring. And because he's insane, brilliant, immortal and extremely powerful, he's responsible (whether directly or indirectly) for the vast majority of crises in the Guilty Gear universe.

    Something else I want to add, too, his personality as seen in the theme and story is even reflected in his gameplay. He's a very technical character, arguably the hardest in the game, but he's also consistently the one of, if not THE strongest characters competitively. But as someone who mains him, there is definitely a flow to his gameplay that, once he gets started, you're effectively fighting a boss character,. If you don't manage his resources properly (Concentration gauge, bullets, curse, meter, burst) he loses focus and is thrown off balance. His "flow" has been interrupted. He has no reversal moves, and most of his strong points revolve around his very strong offense rather than defense. His negative edge gunshot mechanic allows you to control exactly hen to aim and when not to aim, even if you're already in the middle of an attack, allowing for a lot more varied ways to pressure your opponent on block, confirms off of virtually any hit, and even incredibly unique and strong combos that couldn't be done otherwise. You could even talk about how he's one of the only characters who utilizes wallslump resets, situations where it's better to drop the combo than to break the wall. He doesn't want a conclusion. He just wants his flow, god dammit. tl;dr, please don't stop his flow

    Happy Chaos (HC) in lore is critical in the plot happening at all, though his intentions were actually to help protect the world. HC created an extra dimensional being, who's mission was to protect humanity for all time and this was WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY back in history. Flash forward this being, The Universal Will, goes rouge. Having determined that humanity in all of it's flaws and infighting was not worth saving, believing that we were not actually the humans it was meant to save at all. It attempting to manifest into our world is what starts the plot of Guilty Gear. The universal will having at that point making their own creations without those problems, IE true humans, and what it should protect. (There are only 4, and one of them is made dead by Sol) Once HC starts showing his head, he himself is somewhat disillusioned with protecting humanity, or any particular person specifically, but rather cherishes life itself, and true freedom. This is where we get "I dont have anything important to me, that's why everything is beautiful." Chaos doesnt see the individual anymore, and doesnt believe it matters either. The ironic part being that humanity's attempt over the course of the series (largely because of things championed by Ky Kiske and you should 10000% listen to roar of the spark) better itself and avoid conflict that the universal will's basis for trying to kill everyone.HC however, doesnt believe a endpoint in progress is real and anything less than an arbitrary construct by leading viewpoints. To strip away conflict and one's rights to live as they fit is to make the system of life dull and predicable. He'd be happy to see everyone go full caveman and have control on their own future. As long as something is breathing and struggling/living by its own values it's worth it. This is how Chaos can also side on being good. Someone bent on killing everyone/ruling the world via tyranny is not cool by him either, or at least once it looks like they might win. TLDR HC is basically "Burn it down and start over" made into a person.

    I interpret the “100 of me” parts of the song being that Happy Chaos is someone of unfathomable power being known previously as The Original and he has a lot of stories that have been told about him. So there are hundreds of different versions of him based on who tells you the story, so he is a inconsistent and unknown like a Black Sea. And he, as stated, doesn’t want a conclusion to any of his stories and this plays into him being more of a side character to someone else’s story. I think part of Happy Chaos’ story is that we are overthinking a character who is far more simpler then what we play into, but then we get into the different stories and interpretation of someone who can not be explained because in his eyes he doesn’t have a meaning to his existence, not yet at least.
